WIKITONGUES: Nicholas speaking Niuafo’ou

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    Hello everyone,
  • 0:02 - 0:04
    My name is Nick.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
I wanted to explain to you all about my language, the language I am speaking now,
  • 0:17 - 0:21
Just as the island itself is situated close to Uvea,
  • 0:21 - 0:25
the language is very similar to Uvean and Tongan as well. If you speak Tongan or Uvean
  • 0:25 - 0:27
you will understand this language as well.
  • 0:29 - 0:36
For this reason, some say that this language is a dialect or slang of Tongan,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    but that isnt true.
  • 0:40 - 0:44
Though they are very similar to eachother,
  • 0:45 - 0:49
there are many strong differences between the three languages
  • 0:54 - 0:58
Lea Fakaniua is in danger of going extinct and disappearing
  • 0:58 - 1:03
That is why I strive to protect and preserve the language,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
to continue its use for the future.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
So that one day it will still be able to be heard by my children, and their children after them too
  • 1:13 - 1:23
because it suffers from the increased use of Tongan on the two islands where it is spoken,
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    Niuafo'ou and 'Eua.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
    Thanks and bye!
