Make a Time and Place for Healing | Sister Dang Nghiem

  • 0:01 - 0:03
Make a time and place for healing.
  • 0:04 - 0:09
Whether or not we have sympathetic supporters for our healing.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    We always have ourselves.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
We can be our own soulmate.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
Choose a place and time to be with yourself
  • 0:19 - 0:24
and reflect on healing for just 15 minutes daily.
  • 0:25 - 0:28
    Meditation instruction will come later.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
But for now, just think of finding time in your day.
  • 0:33 - 0:39
Sometimes it is helpful to reserve time for reflection at the beginning
  • 0:39 - 0:45
or the end of each day on waking or when going to bed.
  • 0:46 - 0:49
Think of it as an appointment with your soulmate.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
You may like to sit up to reflect in a special place,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
like in front of an altar,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
or you may like to lie down and relax.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
You may like to stand under a tree,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
or to take a regular walk outdoors.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
In a retreat in the Plum Village tradition,
  • 1:14 - 1:19
we create time for meditation in all four of these postures,
  • 1:19 - 1:24
    sitting meditation, deep relaxation,
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    standing meditation and walking meditation.
  • 1:30 - 1:32
Think about how you would like to practice.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
Find a notebook to write in
  • 1:38 - 1:41
and keep it by your bedside or on your desk.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    If writing is difficult,
  • 1:45 - 1:47
you may find an app on your phone,
  • 1:47 - 1:50
in which you can record your voice,
  • 1:50 - 1:55
which then transcribes your words for you to read at a later time.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
Your writing may take place as a journal,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    a poem or a story,
  • 2:03 - 2:07
whichever form is most fluid for you at the moment.
  • 2:10 - 2:13
Bringing poetry and music into your practice
  • 2:13 - 2:19
can infuse your being with joy, lightness and mindfulness.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    Let yourself create freely
  • 2:22 - 2:26
without the need for form or appraisal.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    This is time for yourself.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
Set an intention for healing during this special time in your day,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    when you will practice self-love
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    and self reflection.
  • 2:45 - 2:47
    Identify who in your family
  • 2:47 - 2:51
or circle of friends may be safe to share with
  • 2:51 - 2:54
in a one on one conversation.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
If there is no one with whom you feel safe,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    don't feel alone.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
Many survivors are in this position.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    This is just an indication
  • 3:08 - 3:12
that you may need to look outside of your current community for support
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    and companionship on the path.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
In this case, consider joining a group
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    dedicated to healing from trauma.
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    Your Sangha,
  • 3:25 - 3:29
the Buddhist word for spiritual community
  • 3:29 - 3:32
is also a wonderful source of support.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
    The collective energy of practitioners
  • 3:36 - 3:40
can help us gradually feel safe in our ourselves
  • 3:40 - 3:43
and in the presence of others.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
This is essential to our healing.
