Meet America's New First Family

  • 0:00 - 0:04
In early 2017, President-elect Donald Trump
announced plans to appoint his son-in-law,
  • 0:04 - 0:07
Jared Kushner, as a Senior White House Advisor.
  • 0:07 - 0:11
Kushner is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka
and was a key player both in the campaign
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    and the cabinet appointment process.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
As inauguration day nears, a spotlight has
been shined, not just on Kushner, but on all
  • 0:17 - 0:18
    of Trump’s close relatives.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
So, let's meet America’s newest first family.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
Donald Trump has been married three times
    and has five children.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
His three eldest children, Donald Jr, Eric,
and Ivanka are from his first marriage to
  • 0:28 - 0:32
Czech fashion model Ivana Trump. All three
have held high ranking positions in the Trump
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    Organization, and Donald Trump’s
sons are slated to take over its operations
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    while he’s in office.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka have also appeared
on many episodes of their father’s
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    reality show, The Apprentice.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
The oldest son, Donald Jr., also called “Don”
is married to a former model
  • 0:47 - 0:49
and has five children of his own.
  • 0:49 - 0:53
He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania
    with a degree in Economics,
  • 0:53 - 0:56
and played anactive role in his father’s
    2016 presidential campaign.
  • 0:56 - 1:01
However, as a surrogate, he attracted widespread
criticism for a Tweet comparing Syrian refugees
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    to skittles, even garnering
    condemnation of the statement
  • 1:04 - 1:06
from the parent company of Skittles itself
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    Trump’s second son, Eric, graduated
    from Georgetown University
  • 1:10 - 1:12
with degrees in finance and management.
  • 1:12 - 1:16
For the last decade, Eric has also run his own
    charitable foundation, raising money for
  • 1:16 - 1:20
St. Jude Childrens hospital, although some
of these funds have allegedly been paid to
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    the Trump Organization itself.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
Eric has left his post as president of the
charity to avoid possible conflicts of interest.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
But perhaps the best known of Trump’s children
    is his first daughter Ivanka.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
Ivanka is a former model and active businesswoman,
with her own fashion and jewelry lines.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
She identifies as “neither Republican nor
Democrat”, and is reportedly a close friend
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    of Hillary Clinton’s daughter Chelsea.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
Ivanka has advocated for left-wing causes
like women’s rights and gay rights,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
and was pivotal in her father's’ campaign
and transition into the White House.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
Even before the start of Donald Trump’s
term, Ivanka was part of a meeting
  • 1:51 - 1:56
with Japan’s Prime Minister, and reportedly
taken over a phone call with House Minority
  • 1:56 - 1:58
Leader Nancy Pelosi to discuss women’s issues.
  • 1:58 - 2:02
Many say she is poised to have a greater role
in the White House than previous First Daughters,
  • 2:02 - 2:04
and perhaps even the First Lady.
  • 2:04 - 2:09
Donald Trump’s current wife is former Slovenian
model Melania Trump, and is the second First
  • 2:09 - 2:12
Lady in U.S. history to have been born
    outside the United States.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
She immigrated to the US in 1996,
and became a citizen ten years later.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
She doesn’t have a college degree
    but reportedly speaks five languages.
  • 2:20 - 2:24
As First Lady, Melania has said she will focus
    on helping women and children,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    as well as combating cyberbullying.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
    Trump’s two youngest children have
received the least amount of attention.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
23-year-old Tiffany Trump has been referred
to as a “mystery daughter”, and is the
  • 2:33 - 2:37
daughter of Trump’s second wife, Marla Maples,
who he married after a highly publicized affair
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    during his first marriage.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
She is a recent graduate of the University
of Pennsylvania, where she majored in sociology
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    and urban studies.
  • 2:44 - 2:47
She is both a singer and a model, and is known
    for a popular Instagram account
  • 2:48 - 2:51
where she appears with other heirs and heiresses,
dubbed the “rich kids of instagram”.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
Donald and Melania’s son, 10-year-old Barron,
    sometimes called “Little Donald”, attends
  • 2:56 - 2:59
a prestigious school in New York City where
he will live with his mother until the end
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    his current school term.Donald Trump
    also has eight grandchildren.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Although some members of Trump’s family
fill the ranks in his transition team and
  • 3:07 - 3:11
other key advisory positions, federal anti-nepotism
laws forbid government officials from appointing
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    family members to public office.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
However, experts say Trump could work around
this law because of a legal precedent set
  • 3:18 - 3:23
by, ironically, Bill Clinton, when he appointed
of his wife Hillary to a government task force.
  • 3:23 - 3:27
What role his family holds in the new
administration still remains to be seen.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
From hotels, to casinos to golf courses,
    the Trump name is plastered
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    everywhere around the world.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
Now that Donald Trump is in office his children
will take over the family business,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
but is that enough to ensure that
there are no conflicts of interest?
  • 3:38 - 3:42
Prior to the election we took
a look at the business problems
  • 3:41 - 3:42
Trump may face while in office.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
The problem with blind trust is that it's
really hard to make sure they're blind
  • 3:46 - 3:49
    and there's a big complication
when it comes to Trump: his name.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
Since his largest source of income is his
brand name, it would be impossible for
  • 3:53 - 3:57
Trump not to notice which buildings and
    businesses license his name after
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    transferring ownership
of it to a blind trust.
  • 3:58 - 4:02
