New Man/Incredible | Xola Malik | TEDxSnoIsleLibraries

  • 0:08 - 0:10
    You are a person;
  • 0:10 - 0:14
    the most complex living creation
    on earth; a human being.
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    Fearfully and wonderful made,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    your brain is more powerful
    than any computer.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    You think and reason.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
You have emotions, feelings, and a spirit.
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    Your DNA and fingerprint
are just like your gifts and talents:
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    they're unique to you.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    You were created on purpose,
    for a purpose,
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    the Earth being
the perfect distance from the Sun
  • 0:36 - 0:40
    with the perfect atmospheric
    conditions to sustain life;
  • 0:40 - 0:42
the intricate design of human beings
  • 0:42 - 0:46
    and our complex body functions;
    life itself; space and time.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
It's OK we don't have it all figured out,
  • 0:49 - 0:53
and there just may be something
    to this God thing.
  • 0:53 - 0:55
But let's table that for a future talk
  • 0:55 - 0:57
and get back to us as individuals.
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    Mankind is a cool, diverse,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    interconnected, interdependent puzzle.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
Each of us, no matter our color,
    fame, economic background,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
or status, is exactly one piece
    of that puzzle.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
And as we serve one another,
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    we complete the puzzle,
    and we all benefit.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    I used to think small
    growing up without a father,
  • 1:18 - 1:20
my single mom working two jobs.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    As I got older,
    every goal was self-serving.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    But I began to realize,
    a commitment to a cause,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
a group of people, a person, a faith,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
those are the things that define me.
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    The shift from selfish
    to selfless thinking
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    grows us as people.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    I am a hip-hop recording artist.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
I hope to change your perception
    of what that is.
  • 1:47 - 1:53
The man I am today understands
    that life, love, and relationships
  • 1:53 - 1:55
    require me to commit,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    to be locked in,
    to be decisive and passionate,
  • 2:00 - 2:04
to stand up against ignorance, apathy...
  • 2:08 - 2:13
The man I am today understands
  • 2:17 - 2:21
that life is what we decide it'll be.
  • 2:26 - 2:31
I have to forget my past
in order to focus on my future.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    I'm a new man.
  • 2:36 - 2:38
(Music plays with Malik's recorded voice)
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    Sometimes when you're grown up,
    you ain't grown up
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    XM: Normally I make music
to make people jump up and down,
  • 2:44 - 2:47
but I just want you guys
    to listen right now; listen.
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    I used to be young
    and kind of foolishness
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    I was into it
so I tried to keep hanging
  • 2:52 - 2:54
With dudes that I went to school with
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    And they were doing nothing
    so I was doing nothing
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    Productive at doing nothing,
it was time to change something
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    'Cause of all my potential
    giving life to instrumentals
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    Was slipping between my fingers
    like sands in an hourglass
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    My road windy and rough,
    I made silly mistakes
  • 3:07 - 3:10
And left a lot of heartache
    and heartbreak in my wake
  • 3:10 - 3:13
And even in the middle of it,
    facing my toughest choice
  • 3:13 - 3:16
I hear the words and the sound
    of my mother's voice
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    She sees greatness in me,
    underachieving
  • 3:19 - 3:22
She knows the power of faith,
    and she's believing
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    One day I'd wake up
    and realize I'm wasting
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    A lifetime on all these
    good times that I'm chasing
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    I'm seeking something different,
    this ain't my life plan
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    I'm stepping to You
and stepping out a new man
  • 3:33 - 3:35
I keep on building, keep on moving
  • 3:36 - 3:38
With each new day I keep proving
  • 3:38 - 3:41
The past and future are not equal
  • 3:41 - 3:44
The story is stormy, but there's a sequel
  • 3:44 - 3:50
    And if you don't recognize
the man you see before your eyes
  • 3:50 - 3:54
    It's 'cause I'm a new man,
'cause I'm a new man inside
  • 3:54 - 3:56
And the old man's gone away
  • 3:56 - 3:59
I was a kid chasing the fame,
    young, chasing the game
  • 3:59 - 4:02
    Chasing these little frames,
    but then something changed
  • 4:02 - 4:04
Did a full 180 from the days
when I used to be shady
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    Figured out the importance
    of sticking to one lady
  • 4:07 - 4:10
I don't dip in the club,
run and rip in the club
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    I'm skipping the club,
    girls strip in the club
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    Dudes trip in the club,
shots pop, blood drip in the club
  • 4:15 - 4:19
No love, just troub' in the club
and the streets so I'm done
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    Plus, we takin' vows, baby,
    I take 'em serious
  • 4:22 - 4:25
These girls wanna take your place,
    must be delirious
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    We in this life forever,
    even through stormy weather
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    And we'd rather die
    and treasure every moment together
  • 4:30 - 4:33
Since I put a ring around
the fing, it ain't a fling
  • 4:33 - 4:36
It's just the way I feel about you
and the love we share and bring
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    To the table, and stability
    minimizes mystery
  • 4:39 - 4:41
This family's about to make history
  • 4:41 - 4:44
I keep on building, keep on moving
  • 4:44 - 4:47
With each new day I keep proving
  • 4:47 - 4:50
The past and future are not equal
  • 4:50 - 4:53
The story is stormy, but there's a sequel
  • 4:53 - 4:58
    And if you don't recognize
the man you see before your eyes
  • 4:58 - 5:03
    It's 'cause I'm a new man,
'cause I'm a new man inside
  • 5:03 - 5:05
And the old man's gone away
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    New days are ahead,
    old days are behind
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    New vision, new heights,
    and I'm no longer blind
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Looking at my face,
tell me what do you see?
  • 5:13 - 5:16
It don't always reflect what's in me
  • 5:16 - 5:18
    Been blessed, and my face
    is still looking the same
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    But in my heart
    a whole lot has changed
  • 5:21 - 5:24
    My rear-view mirror
    is small, windshield big
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    And I don't forget it --
    where I came from
  • 5:26 - 5:28
But I focus on where I'm headed, yeah
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    I can't forget the lesson
    when walking in my blessing
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    Peep in the rear-view,
but I keep a clear view
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    Of what's in front of me;
    my past is washed away
  • 5:36 - 5:39
I let regret go and I focus on today
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    God forgive me
    as these people remind me
  • 5:41 - 5:45
Of the changes that I made
    and the past behind me
  • 5:45 - 5:48
It was all for Your purpose,
it was all for Your plan
  • 5:48 - 5:50
    I came into You broken,
    came out a new man
  • 5:50 - 5:53
I keep on building, keep on moving
  • 5:53 - 5:55
With each new day I keep proving
  • 5:55 - 5:58
The past and future are not equal
  • 5:58 - 6:01
The story is stormy, but there's a sequel
  • 6:01 - 6:07
    And if you don't recognize
the man you see before your eyes
  • 6:07 - 6:12
    It's 'cause I'm a new man,
'cause I'm a new man inside
  • 6:12 - 6:15
And the old man's gone away
  • 6:15 - 6:17
Each man that's under the sound
    of my voice right now:
  • 6:17 - 6:20
we are meant to be leaders, man.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
We have to step up in our rightful place,
  • 6:22 - 6:24
and treat our families, our community,
  • 6:25 - 6:27
and our world like it matters,
  • 6:27 - 6:28
and we're the leaders to make it happen.
  • 6:28 - 6:31
    So, men, let's stand up
and be the men we're supposed to be.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
    I'm a new man.
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    (Applause) (Cheers)
  • 6:50 - 6:53
    Thank you, thank you.
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    Ladies.
  • 6:59 - 7:06
    Historically, you have been made
to feel worthless or worth less.
  • 7:07 - 7:11
You've had to fight for every right,
  • 7:13 - 7:17
    every bit of equality,
    every bit of fair treatment.
  • 7:19 - 7:20
You've had to fight for it.
  • 7:22 - 7:26
    I just got done--
I'm following up a female astronaut
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    (Laughter)
  • 7:29 - 7:35
    scientists, rocket scientists,
    psychiatrists...
  • 7:36 - 7:40
    There was a time
when we wouldn't have seen any of that.
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    And guess what?
  • 7:42 - 7:44
There are still places in the world
  • 7:44 - 7:48
    where women don't even have
    those kind of opportunities.
  • 7:50 - 7:53
But I'm here to say something
that I think is really important
  • 7:53 - 7:54
    that you need to realize, ladies;
  • 7:59 - 8:04
that you are so important and significant,
  • 8:04 - 8:09
    and your contributions
have made the world what it is.
  • 8:09 - 8:10
    You're the cradle of life.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
No matter how you've been violated,
no matter how you've been treated.
  • 8:15 - 8:18
I don't care what your past says,
  • 8:18 - 8:20
the future and the past are not equal.
  • 8:20 - 8:23
I just want to see a hand
    for every lady that knows
  • 8:23 - 8:25
that her best days are ahead of her.
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    (Cheering)
  • 8:28 - 8:31
We should hear more men applauding that,
I'm just telling you right now.
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    (Applause)
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    Ladies, you're truly incredible.
  • 8:40 - 8:43
    (Music)
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    Yo.
  • 8:47 - 8:50
This goes out to every lady
under the sound of my voice.
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    Yo.
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    Society better make way,
  • 8:57 - 8:59
    'cause I hear a lot
    of powerful women out here.
  • 8:59 - 9:01
    Check it.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    God's gift, so awesome
  • 9:04 - 9:07
Look at the way the little girl blossomed
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    Incredible, underrated
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    And through the best
and worst days, she made it
  • 9:12 - 9:15
I see the pain and love in her eyes
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    A smile that's bright like a sunrise
  • 9:17 - 9:19
The world wants to pull you down
  • 9:19 - 9:22
But let's build you up and fill you up
  • 9:22 - 9:25
With hope for the next chapter
  • 9:25 - 9:28
Replace tears with smiles and laughter
  • 9:29 - 9:33
    I'm so inclined to say,
"Never let the world define you."
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    You're a masterpiece, soft spoken
  • 9:35 - 9:38
    Strong love not easily broken
  • 9:38 - 9:40
Every daughter, every mother, sister, wife
  • 9:40 - 9:43
    You're the ones
with the power to carry life
  • 9:43 - 9:46
I salute you and celebrate you
  • 9:46 - 9:48
Forgive when we acted like we hate you
  • 9:48 - 9:51
All things made new, new day
  • 9:51 - 9:54
Past hurts, past scars fade away
  • 9:54 - 9:56
Don't let a few bad decisions
  • 9:56 - 9:58
Keep you from accomplishing your mission
  • 9:58 - 10:01
    You're a step above amazing, don't settle
  • 10:01 - 10:04
Beautiful right where you are: incredible
  • 10:04 - 10:06
I just really want you to know, to know
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    Listen, ladies...
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    One word describes you: incredible
  • 10:11 - 10:14
The real men have to stand up
    and let these ladies know
  • 10:14 - 10:16
    that you're incredible.
  • 10:16 - 10:19
    Unconditional love, so patient,
    your strength my inspiration
  • 10:19 - 10:20
    Your contribution to our lives
  • 10:20 - 10:22
You're my anchor, I thank you
  • 10:22 - 10:26
    You're the cradle of civilization;
you're what's real; thank you, ladies.
  • 10:28 - 10:31
    You're incredible, you're incredible
  • 10:31 - 10:33
    All right, listen,
let's take this a little deeper.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
    Uh-huh, hey lady
  • 10:37 - 10:39
Have I told you you're incredible lately?
  • 10:39 - 10:41
    It's a holler or every sister's welfare
  • 10:41 - 10:45
Xola cares, if don't nobody else care
  • 10:45 - 10:48
And I gotta take a minute to tell you
  • 10:48 - 10:50
I'm sorry for the way we failed you
  • 10:50 - 10:53
    'Cause you're more
than a cute face plus curves
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    You're more than the lies
    you've seen and heard
  • 10:55 - 10:57
I guess if no one wants
    to step up, speak truth
  • 10:57 - 11:00
I'ma step up, speak truth, bring proof
  • 11:00 - 11:03
You're one in a billion times seven
  • 11:03 - 11:05
    A handmade original from heaven
  • 11:05 - 11:08
You were born to love, born to lead
  • 11:08 - 11:11
    Born to shine and succeed
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    They want to see you
in a strip club on a pole
  • 11:13 - 11:16
    I'd rather see you
    in a boardroom in control
  • 11:17 - 11:18
    Achieving greatness
  • 11:18 - 11:22
Some artists would rather exploit you,
    they hate this
  • 11:22 - 11:24
They getting nervous as I expose them
  • 11:24 - 11:26
And point you to your purpose
  • 11:26 - 11:29
Even if you've been through hell in a cell
  • 11:29 - 11:31
And you're still breathing, keep believing
  • 11:31 - 11:34
    You're a step above amazing, don't settle
  • 11:34 - 11:37
Beautiful right where you are: incredible
  • 11:37 - 11:40
I just really want you to know, to know
  • 11:40 - 11:43
To every woman in the house that believes
  • 11:43 - 11:45
that her best days are ahead.
  • 11:45 - 11:47
    One word describes you: incredible
  • 11:47 - 11:49
One more time, let me see your hands.
  • 11:49 - 11:51
    Unconditional love, so patient,
    your strength my inspiration
  • 11:51 - 11:54
And this time, men, I want you
to stand up on your feet
  • 11:54 - 11:56
and applaud every woman in this place.
  • 11:56 - 11:58
    Every man in this place,
    let's applaud these women.
  • 11:58 - 12:02
    Give them a standing ovation
    because they are truly incredible.
  • 12:02 - 12:04
    (Applause)
  • 12:09 - 12:13
You guys, thank you so much
for letting me share with you.
  • 12:13 - 12:16
We had an amazing lineup of speakers,
    an amazing time today.
  • 12:16 - 12:20
And I just wanted to say thank you guys
    for being open-minded, embracing hip-hop,
  • 12:20 - 12:24
because I hope that my career
will redefine what hip-hop can truly be.
  • 12:25 - 12:27
God bless you and thank you.
  • 12:27 - 12:28
    (Applause) (Cheers)
