How To Save Our Forests and Rewild Our Planet
-
0:06 - 0:10Most of us have a special memory with trees.
-
0:10 - 0:15A childhood climb,
or their shade on a sunny day. -
0:16 - 0:19But we've taken trees for granted
-
0:19 - 0:23and cleared nearly half
of our planet's forests. -
0:24 - 0:28Luckily, forests have an
extraordinary ability to recover. -
0:32 - 0:36Across much of the globe
lies a forest in the making. -
0:39 - 0:45Just the slightest opportunity,
and trees reveal their magical ability -
0:46 - 0:52to restore themselves and rewild the land,
seemingly for nothing. -
0:53 - 0:58This resilience stems from
a need to survive and recover -
0:58 - 1:02from the harshest conditions
nature can throw at them. -
1:06 - 1:11But forests have struggled to bounce back,
from us. -
1:13 - 1:16Nothing takes down trees
faster than humans. -
1:17 - 1:19We're devastatingly efficient.
-
1:20 - 1:23In just 25 years,
-
1:23 - 1:26we've lost over one million
square kilometers of forest. -
1:28 - 1:32We're still clearing
over ten billion trees a year. -
1:35 - 1:38Many of our ancient forests are gone,
-
1:39 - 1:43where the variety of life
was most abundant and diverse. -
1:46 - 1:49We've also lost the forests' guardians,
-
1:49 - 1:50the predators.
-
1:52 - 1:56Who helped ensure that
plant eaters can't prevent the forests' return. -
1:58 - 2:00But we need trees.
-
2:03 - 2:06Forests absorb carbon from our atmosphere,
-
2:07 - 2:10and store it in their trunks,
roots and the soil. -
2:14 - 2:19They remove almost 15 billion tonnes
of carbon dioxide each year. -
2:22 - 2:26As we clear and burn forests,
we release dangerous amounts of carbon -
2:26 - 2:31back into the atmosphere,
increasing the rate of climate change. -
2:37 - 2:38We need to reverse this
-
2:38 - 2:42and create a world of
expanding forests once more. -
2:44 - 2:49Luckily for us, the solution to how we
restore the planet's forests is simple. -
2:50 - 2:53We just need to give trees the opportunity
-
2:53 - 2:56to draw on their natural resilience.
-
2:57 - 3:02We can start by protecting those
last remaining ancient forests. -
3:05 - 3:08These precious places,
undamaged by humans, -
3:09 - 3:16still host their entire natural mix
of species, and trees, young and old. -
3:18 - 3:24From here, plants and animals can
radiate out to colonize new grounds. -
3:26 - 3:31These ancient places
need to remain standing forever. -
3:34 - 3:39Most of the other forests from our planet
have experienced some human impact. -
3:41 - 3:43Yet they can still be healthy and wild.
-
3:45 - 3:47We can keep them this way
-
3:47 - 3:50whilst carefully extracting
wood and other products -
3:50 - 3:53and valuing them as they are.
-
3:55 - 3:57By managing them well,
-
3:57 - 4:01we can work with their natural resilience
to keep them standing. -
4:05 - 4:08It's a fact that our
growing global population -
4:08 - 4:10will need to use more wood.
-
4:12 - 4:14And that could be a good thing.
-
4:16 - 4:19Wood is an extraordinary
renewable resource, -
4:19 - 4:24and taking it from well-managed sources
benefits forests and the planet. -
4:28 - 4:33But on their own, natural forests
can't provide all the wood that we need. -
4:34 - 4:38So we also have to farm trees,
just like we do other crops, -
4:38 - 4:42and create a new generation of plantations.
-
4:43 - 4:49Plantations thus allow wildlife to
pass through natural forest corridors. -
4:51 - 4:54They benefit local communities
and economies, -
4:55 - 5:01and are planted on existing cleared land
so they don't replace natural forests. -
5:05 - 5:12Around the world, there are an estimated
two billion hectares of degraded land -
5:12 - 5:15where forests could be restored.
-
5:17 - 5:19That's twice the size of Europe.
-
5:22 - 5:26As we become more efficient farmers,
and adopt healthier diets, -
5:26 - 5:29we'll free up land for plantations.
-
5:29 - 5:34And for our forests to return. To rewild.
-
5:36 - 5:38Better farming.
-
5:39 - 5:40More forests.
-
5:43 - 5:48We could help nature to
accelerate this global restoration. -
5:49 - 5:53In many countries, people are
planting millions of trees by hand. -
5:54 - 5:58There are projects that
deploy extraordinary technology -
5:58 - 6:00to speed up the natural process.
-
6:02 - 6:07Even shooting seeds to
rewild those hard-to-reach places. -
6:13 - 6:17If we do all these things,
just imagine our planet in the future. -
6:20 - 6:23We'll have protected
our amazing ancient forests. -
6:24 - 6:28We'll be able to harvest
all the timbre we'll ever need. -
6:29 - 6:31We'll have stabilized our climate.
-
6:33 - 6:37And we'll have more natural forests
than any of us have ever known. -
6:40 - 6:43The best thing of all,
we could build a future -
6:43 - 6:48where our cities will be filled with trees,
giving us shade and cleaning the air. -
6:51 - 6:54This will make us all
healthier and happier. -
6:56 - 7:01Because just seeing trees from a window,
or walking past trees on our way to work -
7:01 - 7:04restores our minds and bodies.
-
7:07 - 7:09That's the magic of trees.
-
7:11 - 7:14And when you're in a forest,
you can feel it. -
7:15 - 7:16Go on.
-
7:17 - 7:18Breathe.
