POWERFUL VIDEO: Why we need to stop plastic pollution in our oceans for good | Oceana

  • 0:02 - 0:04
    Our oceans sustain life.
  • 0:05 - 0:08
    An abundant ocean
    can feed a billion people
  • 0:08 - 0:10
a healthy meal every day forever.
  • 0:11 - 0:14
But now they are being filled, killed
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    by throwaway plastics.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    The equivalent of one
    garbage truck of plastic
  • 0:21 - 0:23
is dumped in the sea every minute -
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    17.6 billion pounds every year.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
Plastic is everywhere in our ocean -
  • 0:31 - 0:32
    floating on the surface,
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    mixing in the saltwater,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
and sitting on the ocean bottom
    miles and miles deep.
  • 0:39 - 0:40
    And once in the ocean,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    it never goes away.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    Over hundreds of years,
  • 0:44 - 0:46
it breaks down into small pieces,
  • 0:47 - 0:48
    but those pieces,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
even the tiny ones called micro plastics,
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    are still plastic.
  • 0:54 - 0:56
Sea turtles are choking on them.
  • 0:57 - 1:03
Scientists say that over 60% of whale
and dolphin species are affected by it.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    it's all plankton, the base
of the ocean food chain eat it
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    and so, do we?
  • 1:09 - 1:11
It's in the water we drink.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    It's in our food -
  • 1:13 - 1:19
    micro plastics have been found
in our salt, our honey, and our beer -
  • 1:20 - 1:23
and sometimes even in the air we breathe.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
Companies are choosing to make something
  • 1:27 - 1:29
that will be used just once,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
from a material that lasts forever.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
If you don't like what throwaway plastics
are already doing to our world,
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    brace yourself.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
We face a tsunami of throwaway plastic
  • 1:43 - 1:46
in our and the ocean's future.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
Four times more plastic will be produced
  • 1:49 - 1:51
between now and the middle of the century
  • 1:51 - 1:54
than has been produced in all of history.
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    Four times more.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    What can we do?
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    Recycling?
  • 2:06 - 2:10
    Of all the plastic ever
    generated as of 2015,
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    only 9% was recycled.
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    Even when it is recycled,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    plastic degrades.
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    Your plastic soda bottle maybe
    becomes a shampoo bottle,
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    then a floor mat,
  • 2:22 - 2:25
even in the best case it doesn't recycle
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    it down cyclists.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    And then it becomes pollution
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    that ruins our beaches
    and chokes sea animals forever.
  • 2:37 - 2:39
    We should not be forced
    to pollute the ocean
  • 2:39 - 2:42
every time we eat, drink, or go shopping.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
We need to be given a choice,
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    a plastic free choice.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
This is not hard to imagine.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    Indeed, some responsible companies
    are already leading the way.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    There are throwaway plastic-free
    aisles in supermarkets.
  • 3:00 - 3:05
    Beverage companies already offer
    plastic-free soda and salsa water.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    Restaurants offer plastic-free service.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
There are plastic-free rooms and hotels
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    An airline is now offering
    a plastic-free flight
  • 3:16 - 3:22
And Oceania and our allies are
    winning plastic-free victories.
  • 3:23 - 3:25
    Following campaigning by Oceania,
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    Peru passed the law
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    that keeps plastic out
    of national parks and beaches.
  • 3:33 - 3:37
Belize is getting rid of styrofoam
  • 3:41 - 3:43
And the European Union has mandated
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    reductions for throwaway plastic
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    throughout its 28 member countries
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    but with your help,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
we can do the work together.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
we can create a movement to reduce throw away
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    plastic
  • 3:58 - 3:59
we can make sure we're all given
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    real plastic free choices
  • 4:01 - 4:05
we can help our cities towns schools and workplaces
  • 4:05 - 4:09
establish zones that are free of throw away plastic
  • 4:09 - 4:14
let's stop plastic pollution from wrecking our beaches and our oceans and
  • 4:14 - 4:18
to have healthy oceans that delight the
  • 4:18 - 4:23
sustained ease for generations to come
  • 4:26 - 4:30
