Recycling fashion: The town turning waste into clothes - BBC News

  • Not Synced
    Most of our clothes
    will never get recycled.
  • Not Synced
99 per cent will end up here,
    dumped and burned in landfill.
  • Not Synced
Our Earth at this point is not capable
  • Not Synced
of absorbing the huge amount of clothing
    that is produced each year.
  • Not Synced
But what if all those wasted clothes
    could be saved
  • Not Synced
    and turned into something else?
  • Not Synced
I've come to a town in Italy called Prato.
  • Not Synced
This place has mastered a method
to transform old scraps into new clothes.
  • Not Synced
    This makes us feel proud.
  • Not Synced
    What happens here is unique.
  • Not Synced
    There are hundreds of companies
    in this small district
  • Not Synced
    and each specializes
in one specific aspect of the process,
  • Not Synced
    whether it's spinning,
    weaving or designing.
  • Not Synced
    And today, incredibly,
  • Not Synced
this town says it processes 15 per cent
of all recycled clothes in the world.
  • Not Synced
    So this is your shirt.
  • Not Synced
If it's too old for the charity shop,
    it gets sent for recycling.
  • Not Synced
    Here, it's sorted by colour,
    torn apart, washed
  • Not Synced
and then the new recycled material
    is taken and transformed
  • Not Synced
to make new clothes with minimum waste.
  • Not Synced
    That was very quick.
  • Not Synced
Let's go through the process again.
  • Not Synced
    You donate clothes,
  • Not Synced
    they arrive here
    from lots of different countries.
  • Not Synced
    All the garments
    that can be sold second-hand
  • Not Synced
are taken to this company nearby.
  • Not Synced
    Here, not only are they
    separated by colour,
  • Not Synced
    but also by material.
  • Not Synced
Think these used to be trousers!
  • Not Synced
How many clothes do you recycle here?
  • Not Synced
    About 25 tonnes every day.
  • Not Synced
The clothes are put in this.
  • Not Synced
    It's called a carbonizing machine,
  • Not Synced
it eliminates impurities from the whole.
  • Not Synced
    Then, they go through this.
  • Not Synced
It's like a giant washing machine.
  • Not Synced
    They're shredded, cleaned
    and dried.
  • Not Synced
    This is the final result.
  • Not Synced
Your old clothes have been transformed
into these fine, fluffy wool fibres.
  • Not Synced
So at the end of the process,
  • Not Synced
    this is what
the new recycled material look like.
  • Not Synced
    They're placed here,
until a fashion brand buys them
  • Not Synced
and uses them to make clothes.
  • Not Synced
    Some people might say that
you are using trash to make clothes.
  • Not Synced
This might have been the case a few years ago.
  • Not Synced
The word "rubbish" was an insult.
  • Not Synced
    But now, many brands...
they buy my products because of it.
  • Not Synced
Because they know that reusing resources
is going to save the planet.
  • Not Synced
    Recycling wool is great
    for the environment.
  • Not Synced
Co2 emissions are more than halved
  • Not Synced
    compared to when clothes
    are made from new material.
  • Not Synced
    We have an immediate impact
    on animal welfare,
  • Not Synced
    because you reduce the stress
that you have to put on the animals
  • Not Synced
    to get the wool.
  • Not Synced
    Almost complete elimination of dyes,
  • Not Synced
because the way the wool is recycled
    is an assortment by colour.
  • Not Synced
This is a method that's been passed on
    from father to son.
  • Not Synced
    The culture in Prato
    is the kind of culture
  • Not Synced
    that we need
    across the entire fashion industry
  • Not Synced
because it is based on collaborations
    that are local,
  • Not Synced
but are capable of showing how,
  • Not Synced
    if these things are taken
    into national or global skill,
  • Not Synced
    the entire industry could benefit.
  • Not Synced
    The people of this town
    were forced to recycle clothes
  • Not Synced
because they couldn't afford the new ones.
  • Not Synced
    Now their method
