Atomic electrons exist at specific energy levels. An electron can be excited to a higher level if it absorbs a photon with energy equal to the difference between the levels. Similarly, an excited electron returns to its ground state, emitting a photon with energy equal to the difference. The specific colors of light absorbed and emitted are called atomic spectra.
