Being a Vegan Is a Great Happiness | Thich Nhat Hanh (Vietnamese with English subtitles)

  • 0:06 - 0:10
When we watch an animal documentary,
  • 0:10 - 0:16
seeing a snake opening its mouth
    to devour a frog,
  • 0:16 - 0:18
we feel a lot of compassion
    in our heart.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    Or we see a bird
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    flying low
    over a river's surface,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    then with its two feet,
  • 0:26 - 0:29
    swooping up a big fish
    and flying away.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
Or we see a tiger chasing
after a fawn or a bunny.
  • 0:35 - 0:40
    It's clear that in life,
    there are sufferings.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    When we see a tiger
    biting a fawn's neck,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    the fawn is very gentle,
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    very beautiful,
  • 0:49 - 0:51
we feel a lot of compassion
    in our heart.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
    However, we know that
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    this lion or this tiger
    has no choice
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    other than
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    biting the fawn's neck
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    because it also...
  • 1:02 - 1:05
because it also needs to live.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    If we have understanding,
  • 1:09 - 1:13
not only do we have compassion
    for the fate
  • 1:13 - 1:15
of that gentle and beautiful fawn,
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    we also have compassion
    for the tiger
  • 1:18 - 1:22
because it's forced to kill this fawn
    to eat and survive.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
    These animals,
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    these fierce animals,
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    they have to hunt.
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    But they have something
    different than humans,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    which is they only hunt
    when they're hungry.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    But humans hunt
    even when they're not hungry.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    They hunt for fun.
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    Even if we have already
  • 1:41 - 1:45
    had enough money
to feed ourselves and our family,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    we still "hunt".
  • 1:48 - 1:50
We want to get richer and richer.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
And when we want a lot of riches,
  • 1:52 - 1:54
    we exploit.
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    We exploit more and more.
  • 1:56 - 2:00
    We exploit people.
    We exploit the marketplace.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
    We inflict sufferings
    on other living beings.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    Because we humans
    are not easily pleased,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    not easily satisfied
  • 2:11 - 2:14
    like a tiger
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    or a lion.
  • 2:17 - 2:22
    When a tiger's or a lion's hunger
    is satisfied,
  • 2:22 - 2:26
they will let go of the rest of their meal
so other animals can polish it off.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
But we humans don't let go.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
We keep it all to ourselves.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
Even when we're full and satisfied,
    we still hunt.
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    But who are we?
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    We are traders.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    We are businesspeople.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
We never stop and rest on the path
  • 2:46 - 2:50
of searching for profits and riches.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    And for that reason,
    the cruelty of humans,
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    compared to that
of a tiger or a lion,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    is great.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    If not a hundred
    or a thousand times greater.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    We're all...
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    We're all hunters.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
We never grow tired of hunting.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    And we've created hells
    everywhere around the world.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    We've caused oppression,
    and injustice,
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    manipulated the society,
    and ruined the environment
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    because we are insatiable hunters,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    no holds barred.
  • 3:27 - 3:31
    But that tiger,
    or that lion,
  • 3:31 - 3:35
    only hunts enough food
    for the day.
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    So
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    while looking deeply,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
we feel compassion towards that fawn,
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    that bunny,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    or that fry.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
But at the same time, we also feel compassion towards that snake
  • 3:49 - 3:50
    and
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    that lion
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    because
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    they have no choice
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    other than killing.
  • 4:00 - 4:02
    While sitting and eating,
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    say, a piece of carrot,
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    a piece of tomato,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    or a string bean,
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    we feel overjoyed because
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    we don't have to hunt
    like that tiger
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    having to sink its jaws
into the neck of a fawn
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    to satisfy our hunger.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
We don't have to gulp a frog
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    down our stomach.
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    And more importantly,
we don't have to act like a hunter
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    of mankind
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    meaning businesspeople.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
They hunt all night and day,
    even in their sleep,
  • 4:39 - 4:42
in search of more and more riches,
  • 4:42 - 4:45
    while creating more social injustice
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    and creating more pollution.
  • 4:48 - 4:51
    We have the happiness
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    of being a vegan.
  • 4:53 - 4:58
If we know how to eat wisely, we'll have
enough nutrients with just little on our plate.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
    Eat in such a way
  • 5:00 - 5:04
    that we keep compassion
    alive in our heart
  • 5:04 - 5:08
and that we can allow our compassion
    to grow every day.
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    While sitting and eating,
    we can feel very happy.
  • 5:11 - 5:15
Many want to be like us
    but cannot.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    Some people
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    they
  • 5:19 - 5:21
have to cut the neck of a chicken.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
    And now,
as we sit here looking deeply,
  • 5:24 - 5:25
    around the world,
  • 5:25 - 5:26
    at this moment,
  • 5:26 - 5:30
there are those who are securing chickens' heads
    to cut their necks.
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    This has been happening
    everywhere around the world.
  • 5:34 - 5:35
    At slaughterhouses,
  • 5:35 - 5:37
    they beat...
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    They are...
  • 5:39 - 5:41
    killing
  • 5:41 - 5:42
    cattle,
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    pigs,
  • 5:43 - 5:44
    and chickens.
  • 5:44 - 5:47
    If you have already
    visited a slaughterhouse
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    and witnessed the way
  • 5:48 - 5:51
    people kill chickens
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    and cows,
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    perhaps
  • 5:55 - 5:56
    more than certainly,
  • 5:56 - 6:00
you will no longer be able
    to eat meat.
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    Some cows,
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    after being showered
    and shoved into a tunnel,
  • 6:05 - 6:07
    can sense their death.
  • 6:07 - 6:09
    They know
    they're entering their deathplace.
  • 6:09 - 6:10
They don't want to move forward
  • 6:10 - 6:13
    but the one behind
    pushes the one in front.
  • 6:13 - 6:17
And some cows are seen crying
with two streams of tears running down.
  • 6:17 - 6:23
They know their fate will end in just
    a matter of seconds.
  • 6:23 - 6:26
If we can see those tears,
  • 6:26 - 6:30
we can no longer bring ourselves
to eat a piece of beef.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    When we sit and eat
    with the sangha,
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    if we can contemplate
    and touch this reality,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    seeing a snake
  • 6:41 - 6:42
    swallowing
  • 6:42 - 6:44
    a frog,
  • 6:44 - 6:46
    seeing a lion
  • 6:46 - 6:48
sinking its teeth into a fawn,
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    we will immediately feel
    very blessed
  • 6:51 - 6:52
for being able to eat food
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    that's this simple
  • 6:54 - 6:56
    and yet this delicious.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    It's such a great happiness.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
And whom is that happiness for?
  • 7:00 - 7:03
Is it a selfish kind of happiness?
  • 7:03 - 7:06
    If we cannot be nourished
    with this kind of happiness,
  • 7:06 - 7:09
what can we do for anyone else?
  • 7:10 - 7:11
    If we're not happy,
  • 7:11 - 7:15
    we can never share happiness
    with anyone.
  • 7:15 - 7:19
So happiness in the present moment
    is very essential for us.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
It's thanks to this kind of happiness
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    that we're propelled
    to do something,
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    to avoid doing the things
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    that create more suffering
    in the world.
