"No birth, no death. No coming, no going." | Teaching by Thich Nhat Hanh | #mindfulness

  • 0:04 - 0:10
A sheet of paper can be the object of our meditation.
  • 0:12 - 0:17
The sheet of paper is there because it has been born some time in the past,
  • 0:18 - 0:22
when it was produced by a paper firm.
  • 0:23 - 0:28
And we can establish a birth certificate for the sheet of paper.
  • 0:29 - 0:38
I certify that this sheet of paper is born at that moment, of the day, of that month, of that year.
  • 0:41 - 0:47
But if you look deeply into the nature of the sheet of paper...
  • 0:49 - 0:52
we can discover that this sheet of paper has never been born.
  • 0:53 - 0:57
Because to be born means from nothing you become something.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
And this is not born from nothing.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
Before it manifests itself as a sheet of paper, it had been many things else.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    It had been a tree.
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    Can you see?
  • 1:16 - 1:22
It had been the sunshine, the rain, the clouds, the trees, the earth.
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    So many things.
  • 1:28 - 1:33
And you also, before you were born from your parents, you had been many things.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
You cannot say that before your birth, you did not exist.
  • 1:38 - 1:39
    That's not true.
  • 1:41 - 1:45
The moment we call birth is only a moment of continuation.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
So looking deeply into the sheet of paper you see that
  • 1:55 - 2:06
the sheet of paper continues to be a leaf, a tree, a cloud, the sunshine, and many things.
  • 2:08 - 2:16
When we look into ourselves, we can see that we have a mountain inside, we have a river inside.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    We have trees inside.
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    We have rocks inside.
  • 2:23 - 2:30
It's not only that we have been a tree, a rock, a mountain, a river in our past lives,
  • 2:30 - 2:41
but we continue to be a tree, a rock, a rabbit, a deer and the water in this very moment.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
It cannot be true that you did not exist before your conception.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
You carry with you the whole cosmos.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
Now, let us meditate a little bit more on this sheet of paper.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
This sheet of paper has not been born.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    Its nature is no birth.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
And if it has not been born, it cannot die.
  • 3:09 - 3:14
We cannot reduce it into non-being, even if we burn it.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
In the process of being burnt,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
the sheet of paper finds ways to continue
  • 3:27 - 3:28
    its presence.
  • 3:30 - 3:35
The heat, produced by the burning, will penetrate into the cosmos,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
and penetrate in every one of us.
  • 3:41 - 3:45
Some of the paper will be transformed into the smoke,
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    joining the cloud.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
There you are, encountering the sheet of paper again.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    It's wonderful.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    It's a continuation.
  • 4:04 - 4:07
And the ash can be returned to the ground.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
And you might encounter a little flower on the grass.
  • 4:13 - 4:14
And the little flower will say,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
"Hello, my dear, here I am again,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    a little sheet of paper."
  • 4:22 - 4:26
So there is only continuation, there is no death.
  • 4:28 - 4:29
    No non-being.
  • 4:32 - 4:35
There is no coming, there is no going,
  • 4:35 - 4:38
there is no birth, there is no death.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
There's only a continuation of manifestation.
