Two step word problem (double subtraction)

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    - [Instructor] We're told a
    movie theater has 614 seats.
  • 0:03 - 0:08
137 seats are red, 228 seats are yellow.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
The rest of the seats are green.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
How many seats in the theater are green?
  • 0:13 - 0:15
    Pause this video and see
if you can figure that out.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    Well, let's first visualize
    this a little bit.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
So we have 137 seats that are red.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
I'll use a little strip here to show 137.
  • 0:27 - 0:32
Then we have 228 seats that are yellow.
  • 0:33 - 0:38
    So I'm approximating, let's call that 228.
  • 0:38 - 0:40
    228 that are yellow.
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    And then we have some
    number that are green.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
The rest of them are green.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
So I will put a question mark here.
  • 0:47 - 0:51
And we know that the total
    number of seats is 614.
  • 0:51 - 0:52
They tell us that right over there.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
Lemme do that in that another
    color right over here.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
The total number of seats is 614.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
So what is going to be
    the number of green seats?
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Well, you could take the total 614
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    and if you subtract 137
  • 1:09 - 1:11
and you subtract 228, then you'll be left
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    with this little green part.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    So we need to subtract
    137 and subtract 228
  • 1:20 - 1:25
to get to the number of green seats.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    So let's do this.
  • 1:27 - 1:32
And we could do 614 minus 137 first.
  • 1:32 - 1:37
And to do that, I am going
    to actually break out 614.
  • 1:38 - 1:40
You can think about it breaking
    into their place values.
  • 1:40 - 1:44
We have six hundreds, which I
could view as 600 plus one 10,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
which is the same thing as 10, plus four.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    That's 614. And I wanna subtract 137.
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    Well, that's the same thing
    as subtracting a hundred,
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    subtracting 30, and subtracting seven.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
And so what would this be equal to?
  • 2:02 - 2:03
Well, I could go to the one's place.
  • 2:03 - 2:07
Well, I can't subtract seven from four.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
So let me see if I can
    regroup a little bit.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    Let's see if I took 10
    from the tens place.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
So if this becomes zero right over here,
  • 2:15 - 2:16
    so I have nothing there.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
But then I take that 10,
put it here, I get 14.
  • 2:19 - 2:22
And now, I can figure out 14 minus seven
  • 2:22 - 2:26
    is equal to seven.
  • 2:26 - 2:28
Now, I have a problem in the
    tens place right over here.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
    Zero minus 30, I can't do that.
  • 2:30 - 2:33
So let me take a hundred
    from the hundreds place.
  • 2:33 - 2:38
So let me take a hundred outta here.
  • 2:38 - 2:39
So this is gonna be 500.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
And let me put that a hundred over here.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    So I have a hundred.
  • 2:42 - 2:47
Now, I can do a hundred
minus 30 is equal to 70.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
And then I have 500 minus
100, which is equal to 400.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
So 400 plus 70 plus seven, which is 477.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    That's just this part
    right over here is 477.
  • 3:01 - 3:03
And now, I have to subtract 228,
  • 3:03 - 3:04
and I could do the same thing.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    I could expand out 477,
  • 3:06 - 3:11
    that's 400 plus 70 plus
    seven, four hundreds,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    seven tens, seven ones.
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    And I'm going to subtract
    two hundreds minus 200,
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    two tens minus 20, that's
    two tens here, minus eight.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    I'm subtracting out this
whole, all the parts of it.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
And so what is that going to be equal to?
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    Well, same idea. I can't
    subtract eight from seven.
  • 3:30 - 3:32
So let me take 10 from the tens place.
  • 3:32 - 3:34
So if I take 10 from here, this becomes 60
  • 3:34 - 3:37
and I put that 10 here, this becomes 17.
  • 3:37 - 3:42
And so if I have 17 minus eight is nine,
  • 3:43 - 3:48
    60, minus 20 is 40, and
    400 minus 200 is 200.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    So I have 200 plus 40
    plus nine, that is 249.
  • 3:54 - 3:55
And I should've made this bigger
  • 3:55 - 3:57
if I wanted to actually make it to scale,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
but that's how many of the
    seats are actually green.
