Why I protest for climate justice

  • Not Synced
    Pat Mitchell: It's so great
    to see you, my friend.
  • Not Synced
    Jane Fonda: Hi Pat.
It's great to be with you.
  • Not Synced
PM: Jane, for the ones who may not
    have seen the extraordinary coverage
  • Not Synced
around the world of Fire Drill Fridays
  • Not Synced
and the impact that they have already had,
  • Not Synced
talk to us about the origin of this idea,
  • Not Synced
    this particular response
    to the climate crisis.
  • Not Synced
JF: I was very inspired by Greta Thunberg,
  • Not Synced
    the Swedish student,
  • Not Synced
and by the young school climate strikers.
  • Not Synced
Greta says, we've got to get
    out of our comfort zone.
  • Not Synced
We have to behave like our house
    is burning, because it is.
  • Not Synced
And so she really struck a chord in me,
  • Not Synced
and then, learning that just about
  • Not Synced
    a hundred percent
    of climate scientists agree,
  • Not Synced
    they agree that a drastic
    emergency is upon us,
  • Not Synced
    that it is human-caused.
  • Not Synced
    But they said,
  • Not Synced
we can do something about it.
  • Not Synced
We have the time, the technology,
  • Not Synced
    the tools.
  • Not Synced
    We have everything we need
    except political will
  • Not Synced
    to meet the challenge,
    and it's an enormous challenge.
  • Not Synced
We have 11 years, many say, a decade,
  • Not Synced
    and I thought,
  • Not Synced
    Oh I'm so lucky
  • Not Synced
that I am healthy and living
  • Not Synced
in a decade where we who are alive
  • Not Synced
    can actually make the difference.
  • Not Synced
    We can make the difference
  • Not Synced
    as to whether there's going
to be a livable future or not.
  • Not Synced
What a glorious responsibility we have.
  • Not Synced
We have to step up to the plate,
  • Not Synced
    and when you're famous,
  • Not Synced
there's a lot of things that you can do.
  • Not Synced
    You have a bigger platform.
  • Not Synced
So I decided that, like Greta,
  • Not Synced
I was going to put my body on the line
  • Not Synced
    and move to the center
    of American power, Washington, DC,
  • Not Synced
and have a rally every Friday
    like the students do,
  • Not Synced
and we work with the students.
  • Not Synced
    They speak at my rallies
and I speak at their rallies,
  • Not Synced
    and that after we speak,
  • Not Synced
    we engage in civil disobedience
  • Not Synced
    and risk getting arrested.
  • Not Synced
Civil disobedience is a powerful tool
  • Not Synced
that has changed history many times,
  • Not Synced
    both in the United States
  • Not Synced
    in the '60s during
    the Civil Rights Movement,
  • Not Synced
of course in India with Mahatma Gandhi,
  • Not Synced
and I didn't know in the beginning
if it was going to work or not,
  • Not Synced
but it's made me very happy
    to see what's happening.
  • Not Synced
PM: It's also led to your being arrested
  • Not Synced
    multiple times, actually,
  • Not Synced
spending at least a night or two
    in Washington, DC jails,
  • Not Synced
and while all of us I think recognize
    the emergency and the actions
  • Not Synced
    that you so kindly mentioned
    others have taken,
  • Not Synced
    I'm not sure that we
would put our bodies at risk,
  • Not Synced
    our lives, our careers,
  • Not Synced
    and our lives on hold
  • Not Synced
    as you have done.
  • Not Synced
    Do you have any concerns
    about that at this point?
  • Not Synced
JF: Well, I realize that not everybody
    can leave work and go
  • Not Synced
    and do what I'm doing,
  • Not Synced
    but I must say that
    requests are pouring in,
  • Not Synced
not only from around the United States,
  • Not Synced
    but from other countries,
  • Not Synced
    people who want
    to start Fire Drill Fridays,
  • Not Synced
and the people who are coming
    and getting arrested with me
  • Not Synced
    and engaging with civil disobedience,
  • Not Synced
many of them have never done it before,
  • Not Synced
and they find it to be transformative.
  • Not Synced
But the fact is that there are
so many things that people can do,
  • Not Synced
    starting with talking about it,
  • Not Synced
expressing how you feel about it
    and talking about it,
  • Not Synced
    even when it's uncomfortable,
  • Not Synced
    at a holiday dinner table
  • Not Synced
and maybe Uncle Bob doesn't agree,
  • Not Synced
but you know maybe Uncle Bob
    is worried about his grandkids,
  • Not Synced
    maybe he loves birds.
  • Not Synced
There's always a way in with people
  • Not Synced
to get them to feel concerned
    about the climate crisis.
  • Not Synced
Of course, voting is very, very important,
  • Not Synced
and we have to vote for the people
    that are the bravest,
  • Not Synced
the boldest of our elected officials,
  • Not Synced
because the task ahead of us,
  • Not Synced
all over the world, but certainly
    here in the United States,
  • Not Synced
    we have to get rid
    of this current administration,
  • Not Synced
and we have to elect people
    that are really brave,
  • Not Synced
that will step up and do
the bold actions that are needed,
  • Not Synced
the way Franklin Delano Roosevelt did
  • Not Synced
    during the 1930s,
    during the Great Depression,
  • Not Synced
    when he really changed
a great deal about American society,
  • Not Synced
and that's what is needed now.
  • Not Synced
PM: So Jane, we should also explain,
  • Not Synced
because many people who are here
are thinking, what can they do?
  • Not Synced
    Can they come to Washington
and join you in this action?
  • Not Synced
    We should explain, not everyone
who participates in Fire Drill Fridays
  • Not Synced
is under threat of being arrested.
  • Not Synced
    There are other parts
    of what you're doing,
  • Not Synced
    like you are currently
in the Greenpeace Offices in Washington.
  • Not Synced
    So explain what else
is a part of Fire Drill Fridays,
  • Not Synced
    and how we could participate
    in civil disobedience
  • Not Synced
without the risk of getting arrested.
  • Not Synced
JF: First of all, you want to try
not do anything as a lone individual.
  • Not Synced
You know, it's by our powers combined.
  • Not Synced
    There's strength in numbers.
  • Not Synced
    There's also community in numbers,
  • Not Synced
and one of the hardest things
    about what we're facing now
  • Not Synced
is this is a collective crisis
  • Not Synced
    coming at a time when
the whole notion of the collective,
  • Not Synced
of the commons, of the public sphere
  • Not Synced
    is being eroded quite deliberately
    by neoliberalism and conservatism.
  • Not Synced
And so reconnecting with groups of people,
  • Not Synced
like-minded people in a common action,
  • Not Synced
    is solace to the soul.
  • Not Synced
    It gives you such strength.
It's a great antidote to depression.
  • Not Synced
    So find out what organizations
  • Not Synced
    that are concerned about
the climate crisis are in your area.
  • Not Synced
    Of course, Greenpeace has chapters
    all around the world.
  • Not Synced
And even if you just start yourself,
    have house parties,
  • Not Synced
    invite people over
    to talk about what's happening.
  • Not Synced
Find an article that you can all read
    and discuss together.
  • Not Synced
    Obviously, if there's
a climate action where you live,
  • Not Synced
    try to join it.
  • Not Synced
    It's not necessary
  • Not Synced
    to engage in civil disobedience
    and risk getting arrested,
  • Not Synced
but it is going to become
    the normal, I think.
  • Not Synced
It feels like it is here in DC
    with Fire Drill Fridays.
  • Not Synced
    People seem to want
to come back and do it again.
  • Not Synced
    My grandkids just
    got arrested last weekend.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It was a transformative experience.
  • Not Synced
    My fellow actors Sam Waterston,
  • Not Synced
    who was a self-described centrist,
  • Not Synced
he had never spoken at a rally
  • Not Synced
    or risked getting arrested,
  • Not Synced
and he was arrested with me.
  • Not Synced
Last week I see that he was arrested
    at the Harvard-Yale game.
  • Not Synced
    He sent me a picture
    of himself in handcuffs,
  • Not Synced
saying, "Now look what you started."
  • Not Synced
    People, you know, we're at
a point I think in this crisis
  • Not Synced
    where people are looking
    to take the next step.
  • Not Synced
They want to put their bodies on the line,
  • Not Synced
as Greta Thunberg has exhorted us to do,
  • Not Synced
and they find it very rewarding,
  • Not Synced
and they want to do it again.
  • Not Synced
So I think that this is good,
    what we're doing.
  • Not Synced
I met with the Senate Task Force
on climate crisis a few weeks ago,
  • Not Synced
    and I asked the senators,
  • Not Synced
    is there something else
    we should be doing?
  • Not Synced
    Should we be doing more?
  • Not Synced
And Senator Ed Markey said to me,
  • Not Synced
    "You're building an army.
    That's what we need.
  • Not Synced
    Make it bigger.
  • Not Synced
We need pressure from the outside."
  • Not Synced
And I think that that's true
    all over the world.
  • Not Synced
    People need to be amassing
    armies for the climate,
  • Not Synced
    armies for the environment,
  • Not Synced
    in the streets,
  • Not Synced
    shutting down governments if necessary.
  • Not Synced
I'm thinking of Brazil right now.
  • Not Synced
    You know, we can't allow
    the burning our precious rainforests.
  • Not Synced
PM: And as you have done
so many times in the past, Jane,
  • Not Synced
    you are leading these changes.
  • Not Synced
    Eventually, one assumes,
especially the fans of Grace and Frankie,
  • Not Synced
that you will go back to your life
  • Not Synced
    and resume that program.
  • Not Synced
But will Fire Drill Fridays continue?
  • Not Synced
    JF: Well, there's been
    such an interest in it,
  • Not Synced
as I said, from all around the country,
  • Not Synced
people asking if they can start one,
  • Not Synced
    and, you know, I have
    a lot of celebrity friends
  • Not Synced
    who haven't for scheduling reasons
been able to come to DC,
  • Not Synced
so, you know, we're thinking about
maybe doing it in Los Angeles,
  • Not Synced
but I just want to correct one thing.
  • Not Synced
    I'm not leading.
  • Not Synced
    It's the young people,
it's the students that are leading.
  • Not Synced
It's always the young people that step up
  • Not Synced
with the courage, and it's pretty amazing,
  • Not Synced
    because they're risking a lot.
  • Not Synced
    It's pretty brave to take
    a Friday off from school.
  • Not Synced
    You could get bad grades.
You could make your teachers mad.
  • Not Synced
    But they're doing it anyway.
  • Not Synced
There have been millions of them
at a time, all around the world,
  • Not Synced
    and they're saying,
  • Not Synced
"Don't let us have to deal
    with this by ourselves.
  • Not Synced
    We didn't create this problem.
    Come and help us."
  • Not Synced
    So Grandmas unite!
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
PM: And you are in a city
    that is probably more divided
  • Not Synced
than it has been in a very long time,
  • Not Synced
    the polarities that exist there
  • Not Synced
and in many other places around the world
  • Not Synced
    has kept our collective strength
    from being unified and used,
  • Not Synced
and in that way you have been leading us.
  • Not Synced
What would success look like to you
    from Fire Drill Fridays?
  • Not Synced
JF: Well, I can just speak
as a citizen of the United States.
  • Not Synced
    Success would look like
  • Not Synced
    every state stops
    all new fossil fuel expansion,
  • Not Synced
    because if they keep drilling
    and fracking and mining,
  • Not Synced
the problem will just get worse
  • Not Synced
    so that no matter what
    we do with windmills
  • Not Synced
and solar collectors and so forth,
  • Not Synced
we'll never be able to catch up.
  • Not Synced
We have to stop all new expansion.
  • Not Synced
    The other thing is,
  • Not Synced
    they would phase out
    fossil fuel emissions gradually,
  • Not Synced
    making sure that the workers
    who would be impacted
  • Not Synced
would be retrained at union wages
  • Not Synced
and get good new union jobs.
  • Not Synced
There are going to be so many good jobs
    with the Green New Deal,
  • Not Synced
    building windmills and solar collectors,
  • Not Synced
    retrofitting all the houses
    in this country, for example,
  • Not Synced
    laying a new energy grid.
  • Not Synced
There's tens of millions of jobs
    waiting to be unleashed,
  • Not Synced
    and that's the other thing
    that has gotten me mobilized.
  • Not Synced
A Green New Deal is a framework
for how to take ourselves into the future
  • Not Synced
in a way that's sustainable and equitable.
  • Not Synced
So that just gives you such hope,
  • Not Synced
because if we do it right,
  • Not Synced
it's going to be a win-win for everyone,
  • Not Synced
and that has to be the case,
    or it won't work,
  • Not Synced
    because to make it work,
everybody's going to have to be involved,
  • Not Synced
and in order for everybody to be involved,
  • Not Synced
    they have to see something
    in it for themselves,
  • Not Synced
and that's what a Green New Deal does.
  • Not Synced
    PM: Jane, you, as always
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
    as you have done
so many times in your life,
  • Not Synced
    you have taken risk
  • Not Synced
    and you have stepped up
    to the front lines.
  • Not Synced
    Do you leave this experience
  • Not Synced
    with any new learning
  • Not Synced
or a new level of commitment,
    hope or optimism?
  • Not Synced
    JF: Yeah, I am optimistic.
  • Not Synced
    People in this country
are really scared about the climate crisis
  • Not Synced
and they want to do something
  • Not Synced
    but nobody has asked them.
  • Not Synced
We just have to ask them.
  • Not Synced
We have to get organized, you know?
  • Not Synced
    And we can do that.
  • Not Synced
    So I feel very hopeful.
  • Not Synced
I must say that I am going to go
back to work on Grace and Frankie,
  • Not Synced
    but part of my heart
is going to be with Fire Drill Fridays,
  • Not Synced
and I hope I can continue with that.
  • Not Synced
I just think that we do
    have to build an army.
  • Not Synced
This coming year is the critical year.
  • Not Synced
What happens is going to be so important,
  • Not Synced
so we have to be sure,
  • Not Synced
    especially someone who is healthy,
  • Not Synced
    who feels relatively young,
  • Not Synced
    who has a platform,
  • Not Synced
    we have to use it
in every possible way we can.
  • Not Synced
And if I didn't have that,
  • Not Synced
then I would find other little ways
    that I could do it:
  • Not Synced
talk to my neighbors, talk to my friends,
  • Not Synced
    talk to my family,
  • Not Synced
    join an organization.
  • Not Synced
That's how, also, as I've said,
    to stave off depression
  • Not Synced
    is to do something active.
  • Not Synced
PM: Jane, at 81, you are modeling
what that can be like for sure,
  • Not Synced
and I think we just recruited a new army.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
  • Not Synced
Thank you very much, my friends.
  • Not Synced
    Stay safe.
  • Not Synced
Thank you for all that you have done
for the planet and so much else.
  • Not Synced
    Join me in thanking Jane.
  • Not Synced
    (Applause)
