Introduction to Economics

Not Synced- [Tyler] I love economics.
-
Not SyncedI began studying economics
when I was 13 -
Not Syncedand I haven't stopped yet.
-
Not SyncedEconomics really has changed
my life and the whole way -
Not SyncedI see the world.
-
Not SyncedWhat's so powerful
about the discipline -
Not Syncedis just how much it shapes
how you understand -
Not Syncedeverything around you.
-
Not Synced- [Alex] But perhaps you're asking,
what's my incentive -
Not Syncedto learn economics?
-
Not SyncedWell, that's a great question.
-
Not SyncedYou've already hit on
a key economic insight, incentives. -
Not SyncedFor example, why is the service
at a local restaurant -
Not Syncedtypically so much better
than from the cable company? -
Not Synced- Or why do laws
which supposedly protect -
Not Syncedendangered species,
sometimes end up -
Not Syncedwith more of those animals
being killed? -
Not Synced- Or why do big toy companies
sometimes advocate for regulations -
Not Syncedwhich raise their costs?
-
Not SyncedIncentives are the key.
-
Not Synced- Another example
might help us explain. -
Not SyncedWay back in 1787,
the British government -
Not Syncedhired sea captains to ship
convicted felons to Australia. -
Not SyncedConditions on those ships
were just awful. -
Not SyncedOn one voyage, more than one-third
of the men died -
Not Syncedand the rest arrived beaten,
starved and sick. -
Not SyncedThe public was outraged,
newspapers called -
Not Syncedfor better conditions,
the clergy appealed -
Not Syncedto the captains' sense of humanity,
and British Parliament -
Not Syncedpassed regulations
requiring better treatment -
Not Syncedof these prisoners.
-
Not SyncedUnfortunately, those attempted
solutions simply didn't work. -
Not SyncedThe death rate
remained shockingly high. -
Not Synced- So Tyler, as a good economist,
how would you solve this problem? -
Not Synced- Well, there was one economist
at the time who came up -
Not Syncedwith a novel solution.
-
Not SyncedIt was implemented
and it basically worked. -
Not SyncedInstead of paying the captains
for each prisoner -
Not Syncedwho embarked to Australia,
the government -
Not Syncedwould pay the captains
only for the prisoners -
Not Syncedwho arrived alive.
-
Not SyncedOvernight, the incentives
of the sea captains changed. -
Not SyncedThe survival rate of the prisoners
shot up to 99%. -
Not SyncedAs one observer put it,
economy beat sentiment -
Not Syncedand benevolence.
-
Not Synced- So what's your incentive
to learn economics? -
Not SyncedPeople hear that I'm an economist
and they ask me -
Not Syncedabout managing their money.
-
Not SyncedAn economics does have
some lessons for investing -
Not Syncedin the stock market, but economics
is much broader than that. -
Not SyncedIt's the study of human action,
how people make choices, -
Not Syncedand how they should make
choices under scarcity. -
Not SyncedEconomics will help you
with your choices, -
Not Syncedwhether picking a career,
parenting a child, -
Not Syncedor deciding how much education
is a truly worthwhile investment. -
Not SyncedOverall, economics will give you
a deeper understanding -
Not Syncedof the key issues of our time.
-
Not Synced- Economics can be hard.
-
Not SyncedRetraining your brain
to look at the world -
Not Syncedin a different way,
isn't always easy. -
Not Synced- But the reward
is a new set of eyes -
Not Syncedto see the world.
-
Not SyncedSo are you ready to begin?
