Introduction to Economics

0:13 - 0:15- [Tyler] I love economics.
-
0:15 - 0:19I began studying economics
when I was 13 -
0:19 - 0:20and I haven't stopped yet.
-
0:21 - 0:24Economics really has changed
my life and the whole way -
0:24 - 0:25I see the world.
-
0:25 - 0:27What's so powerful
about the discipline -
0:27 - 0:30is just how much it shapes
how you understand -
0:30 - 0:32everything around you.
-
0:32 - 0:34- [Alex] But perhaps you're asking,
what's my incentive -
0:34 - 0:36to learn economics?
-
0:36 - 0:37Well, that's a great question.
-
0:37 - 0:41You've already hit on
a key economic insight, incentives. -
0:42 - 0:45For example, why is the service
at a local restaurant -
0:45 - 0:48typically so much better
than from the cable company? -
0:49 - 0:51- Or why do laws
which supposedly protect -
0:51 - 0:54endangered species,
sometimes end up -
0:54 - 0:56with more of those animals
being killed? -
0:57 - 1:01- Or why do big toy companies
sometimes advocate for regulations -
1:01 - 1:03which raise their costs?
-
1:04 - 1:06Incentives are the key.
-
1:06 - 1:09- Another example
might help us explain. -
1:09 - 1:12Way back in 1787,
the British government -
1:12 - 1:16hired sea captains to ship
convicted felons to Australia. -
1:16 - 1:19Conditions on those ships
were just awful. -
1:19 - 1:22On one voyage, more than one-third
of the men died -
1:22 - 1:25and the rest arrived beaten,
starved and sick. -
1:25 - 1:28The public was outraged,
newspapers called -
1:28 - 1:31for better conditions,
the clergy appealed -
1:31 - 1:34to the captains' sense of humanity,
and British Parliament -
1:34 - 1:37passed regulations
requiring better treatment -
1:37 - 1:38of these prisoners.
-
1:39 - 1:43Unfortunately, those attempted
solutions simply didn't work. -
1:43 - 1:45The death rate
remained shockingly high. -
1:46 - 1:49- So Tyler, as a good economist,
how would you solve this problem? -
1:49 - 1:52- Well, there was one economist
at the time who came up -
1:52 - 1:54with a novel solution.
-
1:54 - 1:57It was implemented
and it basically worked. -
1:57 - 2:00Instead of paying the captains
for each prisoner -
2:00 - 2:02who embarked to Australia,
the government -
2:02 - 2:05would pay the captains
only for the prisoners -
2:05 - 2:07who arrived alive.
-
2:09 - 2:12Overnight, the incentives
of the sea captains changed. -
2:13 - 2:16The survival rate of the prisoners
shot up to 99%. -
2:17 - 2:21As one observer put it,
economy beat sentiment -
2:21 - 2:22and benevolence.
-
2:23 - 2:25- So what's your incentive
to learn economics? -
2:25 - 2:28People hear that I'm an economist
and they ask me -
2:28 - 2:29about managing their money.
-
2:29 - 2:32And economics does have
some lessons for investing -
2:32 - 2:36in the stock market, but economics
is much broader than that. -
2:36 - 2:40It's the study of human action,
how people make choices, -
2:40 - 2:43and how they should make
choices under scarcity. -
2:43 - 2:46Economics will help you
with your choices, -
2:46 - 2:50whether picking a career,
parenting a child, -
2:50 - 2:54or deciding how much education
is a truly worthwhile investment. -
2:55 - 2:58Overall, economics will give you
a deeper understanding -
2:58 - 3:01of the key issues of our time.
-
3:02 - 3:04- Economics can be hard.
-
3:04 - 3:06Retraining your brain
to look at the world -
3:06 - 3:09in a different way,
isn't always easy. -
3:09 - 3:12- But the reward
is a new set of eyes -
3:12 - 3:14to see the world.
-
3:14 - 3:17So are you ready to begin?
