Ukulele Lesson 5 - Uke 2 & 4 Hit Strumming (UK-005)
-
0:05 - 0:07Hey, how you doing?
Justin here today! -
0:07 - 0:10We are going to be looking
at some more ukulele. -
0:10 - 0:13We're gonna have a look
at the 2 and 4 hit rhythm, -
0:13 - 0:17really cool little groove. (♪)
-
0:17 - 0:19Now the cool thing with
the ukelele is it is -
0:19 - 0:21it's own kind
of whole orchestra -
0:21 - 0:24You're not usually playing
a ukelele as part of a band -
0:24 - 0:26although it's definitely very possible,
-
0:26 - 0:28much more common is for
people to be playing on their own. -
0:28 - 0:30So, if you've been working a little bit,
-
0:30 - 0:31on your strumming and
you're confident -
0:31 - 0:32with your down and up strumming,
-
0:32 - 0:33and you're staying in time,
-
0:33 - 0:35this is a really really cool little trick
-
0:35 - 0:36to get under your fingers.
-
0:37 - 0:40Basically a drummer, when
they're playing,plays a kick drum -
0:40 - 0:42the big fat drum, on beats 1 and 3
-
0:42 - 0:43and they play the snare drum, which is
-
0:43 - 0:46a really loud one on beats 2 and 4
-
0:46 - 0:48excuse my terrible beatboxing,
but it kinda like: -
0:50 - 0:53and it's this 'ka' sound
that is the... -
0:54 - 0:57Called the back-beat.
Happens on beat 2 and 4 - Okay? -
0:57 - 0:59So, if we introduce that idea of playing
-
0:59 - 1:05a little accented hit on beats 2 and 4,
gives you a little bit more groove. -
1:05 - 1:08So, if I'm just playing regular (♪)
-
1:08 - 1:10and then I add the back-beating
-
1:14 - 1:17It's just like-"Oh yeah, it's
moving along a little better!" -
1:17 - 1:19it's kinda introducing a rhythmic element
-
1:19 - 1:21if I can learn to talk today.
-
1:21 - 1:23So, what do we do?
-
1:23 - 1:29So, normally we're playing
1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and -
1:29 - 1:32down-up-down-up
down-up-down-up -
1:32 - 1:351 and 2, and on that beat 2
-
1:35 - 1:39What we're gonna do is: mute a little bit
with the palm of our hand -
1:39 - 1:42On the strings..
and give it a little strum. -
1:42 - 1:44So, I'd recommend doing this without
any chord at all -
1:44 - 1:50to make sure that you're doing it right.
Just going: 1-and-2. -
1:50 - 1:55Just try that. So, down-up,
and then let your hand fall down -
1:55 - 1:59and let your finger hit the strings
after your hand has already hit the mute. -
1:59 - 2:04So, 1-and-2-1-and-2.
Start-off with that! -
2:04 - 2:08♪
-
2:08 - 2:19Then try and get: 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and
1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and -
2:19 - 2:24♪
-
2:24 - 2:28Now the reason for not using a chord is it's
very tempting to use your fingers to mute the strings. -
2:28 - 2:31Which is another way of doing it...
It's just not as good. -
2:31 - 2:35Okay, so not holding your chord down,
see if you can get that little muted hit. -
2:35 - 2:38It will take some practice, it's
not something that you're likely to go -
2:38 - 2:40"Oh yeah, I can do it!"
- perfect straight away -
2:40 - 2:42or maybe you can, which would be great.
But what you want to work on is -
2:42 - 2:46getting that hand to sit down on the
string and you're strumming just behind. -
2:46 - 2:50I think this is almost certainly gonna be
cool for a close-up. -
2:50 - 2:54So let's just look at this muted hit again.
So we've got the palm of the hand -
2:54 - 2:57That's gonna touch the strings and then
you're gonna strum in front of it -
2:57 - 3:03So it's already muted. If it wasn't there:
(♪) -
3:03 - 3:06So it's just using the heal of your hand
just to rest on the strings. -
3:06 - 3:09So there's nothing coming out.
And then going through: -
3:09 - 3:171-and-2. So try and get that hit.
1-and-2-3-and-4 -
3:17 - 3:21Just try to get that first,
so you can get your nice muted click. -
3:21 - 3:25♪
-
3:25 - 3:33Then try and lock it into the whole groove.
So: 1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and -
3:33 - 3:411-and-2-and-3-and-4
1-and-2-and-3-and-4 -
3:41 - 3:45and 1-and-2-and-3-and-4
-
3:45 - 3:47Now you'll notice there as well I'm
starting to put the shuffle. -
3:47 - 3:54♪
-
3:54 - 3:56Okay? So it's not just straight.
Straight would be: -
3:56 - 4:02♪
-
4:02 - 4:03Wth the shuffle:
-
4:03 - 4:08♪
-
4:08 - 4:14Both of those are pretty useful. But (♪)
that little kind of shuffle with the mute: -
4:14 - 4:19♪
-
4:19 - 4:21Is definitely where it's at.
-
4:21 - 4:25For nearly everyone, this kind of strumming
pattern takes a little practice. -
4:25 - 4:27Takes a while to get used to
the technique. -
4:27 - 4:29Which is something that you wanna work on
separately- right? -
4:29 - 4:34Just, you know, literally working on doing
that and then doing the 1-and-2 thing. -
4:34 - 4:36♪
-
4:36 - 4:39You know, just making sure that you kinda
get that under your fingers first -
4:39 - 4:40before you try and lock into
the whole groove. -
4:40 - 4:45Okay? Really big deal. Just learning
things one-step at a time and -
4:45 - 4:47definitely, definitely don't be trying to
change chords while you're learning this. -
4:47 - 4:52Okay? Either do it with no chords at all,
or just pick a simple chord like C or G, -
4:52 - 4:55or whatever, whatever chord you really
feel comfy with and just stay on that -
4:55 - 4:59one chord while you get the rhythm.
Then once you've got the rhythm, -
4:59 - 5:07maybe try changing just between 2 chords (♪)
-
5:07 - 5:09And if you've got 2 or 3 chords,
and you can start to mix them up, -
5:09 - 5:12you'll find that it's properly under your
fingers and you can apply it to -
5:12 - 5:16any tune you want. So, have a bit of fun
with that, 2-and-4 hit strumming, -
5:17 - 5:20I will see you for plenty more lessons
on uke and guitar and maybe something else -
5:20 - 5:23sometime in the future too.
Take care of yourselves! Bye-bye!
