Why I decorate my hearing aids -Jessica Marie Flores

  • 0:00 - 0:02
    What's sup everybody!
  • 0:02 - 0:03
    Welcome back!
  • 0:03 - 0:07
I wanted to talk a little bit today about
    the reason
  • 0:07 - 0:10
why I actually decorate my hearing aids.
  • 0:10 - 0:13
So when people meet me for the first time,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
and even people who already know me,
  • 0:16 - 0:20
they think that the reason why I decorate my hearing aids is
  • 0:20 - 0:23
because I'm and artsy weird person.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    While that is true,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
I do enjoy decorating my hearing aids, I have fun doing it
  • 0:28 - 0:32
that is only part of the why I actually decorate them.
  • 0:32 - 0:39
The other reason why I decorate my hearing
aids so bright and colorful is because
  • 0:39 - 0:46
they help me inform hearing people that I am Deaf.
  • 0:46 - 0:50
Awhile back I used to wear clear earmolds,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
and hearing aids that matched the color of my hair,
  • 0:54 - 0:58
to hide my hearing loss from hearing people.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
I'll talk more about why I was trying to hide my hearing loss
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    in a different video,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
but to get to the point,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
when I tried to hide my hearing loss
  • 1:08 - 1:11
it made things a lot more
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    complicated for me.
  • 1:13 - 1:18
I constantly had to deal with people's attitude problems
  • 1:18 - 1:21
when it came to me asking them to
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    repeat themselves again.
  • 1:22 - 1:24
Something that you guys should know,
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    a majority of hearing people,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    when they meet somebody
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    for the first time or
  • 1:30 - 1:32
when they try to catch the attention of somebody
  • 1:32 - 1:33
    for the first time,
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    they automatically assume that
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    everybody is hearing.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
These assumptions can make it very difficult
  • 1:42 - 1:44
for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    in certain situations.
  • 1:46 - 1:51
For example, there was this day where it was the first day of school,
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    and there was a teacher
  • 1:52 - 1:59
who was passing out everybody's individual class schedule while taking roll call.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
And I was trying really hard to pay attention to him.
  • 2:02 - 2:04
But the whole time he was saying names,
  • 2:04 - 2:07
he was pretty much looking at the paper, faced down.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
and for those of you that don't know,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
it is extremely hard to read somebody's lips
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    when they're not facing you.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
So anyways, everybody got their class schedule
    except me.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
So I was like oh crap I better go up and ask him
  • 2:22 - 2:24
and I went up and I was like
  • 2:24 - 2:26
"Hey did you call Jessica Flores?
  • 2:26 - 2:28
I didn't hear you say my name."
  • 2:28 - 2:31
Well the response that I got was,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
    "I called it out TWICE.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
Next time you need to stop messing around
  • 2:36 - 2:37
    and pay attention."
  • 2:43 - 2:48
Yeah I a lot more stories than just that one.
  • 2:48 - 2:55
But my point being is that a majority of hearing
people assume that everybody is hearing.
  • 2:55 - 2:59
I mean you guys out number us but just keep
in mind that we're out there.
  • 2:59 - 3:04
That there is a large population of Deaf and
    Hard of Hearing people.
  • 3:04 - 3:11
If you want to get some experience on what
it's like to go through these kind of things,
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    hearing people, I dare you,
  • 3:13 - 3:16
the next time you talk to a stranger or maybe a family member
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    or somebody that you know,
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    Ask them to repeat
    themselves 5 or more times.
  • 3:23 - 3:26
And see what kind of reactions you guys get.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
If any hearing people do decide to do the
    challenge,
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    big props to you.
  • 3:30 - 3:33
What were your reactions, what did people
    say?
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    What did people do?
  • 3:34 - 3:36
Leave them below in the comments for me to
    check out,
  • 3:36 - 3:38
because you know, It's a good chance
  • 3:38 - 3:41
that I've probably got a lot of those
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    same reactions that you got.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    Yeah, see you all later!
  • 3:46 - 3:47
    (PAH!)
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    Finished
