Beyond Good and Evil | Teachings by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • Not Synced
In your practice of Buddhist meditation,
you should learn very quickly that
  • Not Synced
the good and the evil are...
  • Not Synced
    of the same origin.
  • Not Synced
    They are all organic.
  • Not Synced
    They nourish each other.
  • Not Synced
It's like a flower and garbage.
  • Not Synced
The flower is nourished by garbage.
  • Not Synced
    And the garbage is
    nourished by the flower.
  • Not Synced
Because the flower will have to...
  • Not Synced
    to rot. to decompose,
  • Not Synced
    and become the garbage.
  • Not Synced
So the practice within Buddhist meditation
is not to try to destroy, to combat, to fight
  • Not Synced
    what you call evil,
  • Not Synced
but to embrace it tenderly and
to recognize it as it is because it is yourself.
  • Not Synced
    Your fear is yourself.
  • Not Synced
And fighting your fear is fighting yourself.
  • Not Synced
Being afraid of your fear is...
  • Not Synced
    being afraid of yourself.
  • Not Synced
So using the energy of mindfulness
    to embrace your fear
  • Not Synced
represented by the little wounded child
    within you.
  • Not Synced
    It's a beautiful image
  • Not Synced
    corresponding to the truth.
  • Not Synced
    Because that suffering child
    is still alive in you.
  • Not Synced
And you may have been too busy
to take good care of him or her.
  • Not Synced
And now you know the practice.
  • Not Synced
And you have to go back to him, to her,
  • Not Synced
to hold her, to hold him dearly
    in your arms of mindfulness.
  • Not Synced
    With your mindful breathing,
  • Not Synced
    your mindful steps,
  • Not Synced
you take care of him, of her.
  • Not Synced
    And you rely on the
    collective energy of the sangha
  • Not Synced
    in order to embrace her,
    to nourish her also.
  • Not Synced
    And collective practice
  • Not Synced
    always bring the
    collective energy of mindfulness
  • Not Synced
that we can always rely and make use
    in order to embrace our...
  • Not Synced
    wounded child.
