Ask For More of the Holy Spirit - Tim Conway

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    "What Father among you
  • 0:07 - 0:09
if his son asks for a fish
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    will instead of a fish
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    give him a serpent?
  • 0:14 - 0:15
Or if he asks for an egg
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    will give him a scorpion?
  • 0:17 - 0:19
If you then who are evil
  • 0:19 - 0:21
know how to give good gifts
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    to your children,
  • 0:22 - 0:24
how much more will your heavenly Father
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    give the Holy Spirit to
    those who ask Him?"
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    Now, brethren, I would
    just challenge you here.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
How much more will your heavenly Father
  • 0:32 - 0:35
give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?
  • 0:35 - 0:37
One thing I want you to see right off
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    and absolutely clearly
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    and make no mistake about:
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    These are saved men
  • 0:44 - 0:47
asking Jesus to teach them to pray.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
These are not lost men asking Jesus
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    how to be saved.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    Now that's important
  • 0:53 - 0:56
because the way to be saved
  • 0:56 - 1:02
is not to ask God for the Holy Spirit.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    You understand that, right?
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    Because there can be
    a misunderstanding here.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
People can look at this and they can say,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    well, if they're asking
    for the Holy Spirit,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    maybe that means that they
    don't have the Holy Spirit
  • 1:15 - 1:17
and people that don't have the Holy Spirit
  • 1:17 - 1:18
    are lost people,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
and so you go the Father and
you ask Him for the Spirit,
  • 1:21 - 1:25
    and basically, if, you know,
  • 1:25 - 1:26
Paul says this in Roman 8,
  • 1:26 - 1:28
if you don't have the Spirit,
  • 1:28 - 1:30
you don't belong to Jesus Christ.
  • 1:30 - 1:31
    Right? So maybe it's people
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    who don't have the Spirit,
  • 1:33 - 1:35
who don't belong to Jesus Christ
  • 1:35 - 1:37
coming to the Father to get the Spirit
  • 1:37 - 1:40
so that they can get saved.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
I don't know if any of you
    have ever thought that,
  • 1:42 - 1:45
but that is obviously not what that means.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
What you have is you have the idea
  • 1:48 - 1:53
of a child going to his father,
  • 1:53 - 1:57
    which is very consistent
    with the disciples
  • 1:57 - 2:03
asking Jesus to show them how to pray
  • 2:03 - 2:04
    to their Father.
  • 2:04 - 2:05
And that's how Jesus started, right?
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    Pray this way: "Father..."
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    "Our Father..."
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    So, what does that mean?
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    Obviously every single Christian
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    has the Holy Spirit,
  • 2:18 - 2:24
so if we already have the Spirit,
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    and if the Spirit once
    takes up residency -
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    by the way,
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    one of the promises connected
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    with the New Covenant
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    is that God's going to
    give His Spirit to us.
  • 2:34 - 2:36
He's going to put His Spirit within us.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
And if we don't have that Spirit,
  • 2:39 - 2:43
what is it? About Romans 8:9 I think?
  • 2:43 - 2:46
If we don't have the Spirit,
    we don't belong to Christ.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
    And obviously, we don't go
  • 2:49 - 2:56
having the Spirit, losing the Spirit,
having the Spirit, losing the Spirit.
  • 2:56 - 2:59
    Once that Spirit is given,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
    He is with us always.
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    Forever.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    Jesus said that.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
Jesus said that this Comforter was coming,
  • 3:08 - 3:13
and He would be with them forever.
  • 3:13 - 3:15
And so what do we make of that?
  • 3:15 - 3:17
Why are we praying for the Holy Spirit
  • 3:17 - 3:23
if we already have the Holy Spirit?
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    Well, it's interesting,
  • 3:24 - 3:26
if we look at the parallel passage
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    over in Matthew 7,
  • 3:28 - 3:30
it doesn't say "Holy Spirit" there,
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    it says "good things."
  • 3:33 - 3:34
It almost seems to me like
  • 3:34 - 3:36
what Luke does is He reaches
  • 3:36 - 3:37
in the bag of good things
  • 3:37 - 3:40
and He brings out the best thing.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
And why would I say the best thing?
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    Because Jesus, back there
  • 3:44 - 3:46
in that area where John started -
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    the John 14, 15, 16 realm
  • 3:50 - 3:54
where Christ is leaving His disciples -
  • 3:54 - 3:56
do you know why He was telling them
  • 3:56 - 3:58
that He was leaving them peace
  • 3:58 - 4:01
and that they ought not to be afraid?
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    Because He was telling
    them at the same time
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    that He was going away.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
He was going to be taken away,
  • 4:07 - 4:09
but He said this to them:
  • 4:09 - 4:12
Look, it is more profitable for you
  • 4:12 - 4:17
that I go and the Holy Spirit come.
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    There is something
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    about having the Holy Spirit
  • 4:21 - 4:23
that is more profitable for the church
  • 4:23 - 4:27
than if Christ remained here bodily,
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    earthly Himself.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    And Jesus realized it.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
The Holy Spirit was going to unleash
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    such power into the church.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
You think about just what happened
  • 4:35 - 4:36
    in the life of Peter.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    Here's Peter walking with Christ
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    bodily on the earth,
  • 4:41 - 4:43
and look what he was like,
  • 4:43 - 4:46
    versus when Christ leaves,
    the Spirit comes,
  • 4:46 - 4:48
now Peter's filled with the Spirit,
  • 4:48 - 4:49
where before he was denying Christ
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    in front of little girls.
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    Now he's standing boldly
    before the Sanhedrin
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    and he's proclaiming Christ.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    And Christ Himself said
  • 4:58 - 4:59
Peter was going to go all the way
  • 4:59 - 5:03
to laying down his life for Christ.
  • 5:03 - 5:05
    The Spirit of God
  • 5:05 - 5:09
    endued the church of God
  • 5:09 - 5:12
    with power from on high.
  • 5:12 - 5:15
And basically, I think the way
  • 5:15 - 5:18
we want to take Luke 11,
  • 5:18 - 5:21
how much more will our Father
  • 5:21 - 5:23
give the Holy Spirit to them that ask.
  • 5:23 - 5:29
    It's the idea of the
    influences of the Spirit,
  • 5:29 - 5:30
and we all have to admit
  • 5:30 - 5:32
that even in that early church,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    they had the Spirit there.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
The Spirit came down on that church
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    on the day of Pentecost.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
But some of those very same men
  • 5:40 - 5:44
upon whom that Spirit fell in that day,
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    we find later accounts
  • 5:46 - 5:47
where filled with the Holy Spirit
  • 5:47 - 5:48
    there was boldness,
  • 5:48 - 5:51
there was all sorts of things
    breaking out in the church.
  • 5:51 - 5:55
The power of God is not
    static in the church.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    You can't come to that
conclusion by the book of Acts.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    You can't come to that
    conclusion historically.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
You can't come to that conclusion probably
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    if you've been a Christian
    any length of time,
  • 6:05 - 6:08
you realize it in your own life.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
In the life of the church,
  • 6:09 - 6:12
    we have ebbs and flows.
  • 6:12 - 6:18
Brethren, a pastor friend has said,
  • 6:18 - 6:21
    brethren, if we have such
    promise in the Scriptures,
  • 6:21 - 6:22
every time we come to pray,
  • 6:22 - 6:25
we ought to be asking for the Holy Spirit.
  • 6:25 - 6:26
    For what?
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    What does the Holy Spirit
    bring to the church?
  • 6:29 - 6:31
It brought to that early church
  • 6:31 - 6:32
    boldness and courage
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    to proclaim the Gospel.
  • 6:35 - 6:40
The Holy Spirit brings the Word to mind.
  • 6:40 - 6:42
Remember? He said if they get imprisoned
  • 6:42 - 6:44
or they're brought before these leaders
  • 6:44 - 6:46
that don't worry ahead of time
  • 6:46 - 6:47
    what you're going to say?
  • 6:47 - 6:49
Have you guys ever experienced that?
  • 6:49 - 6:50
    You've been in a situation -
  • 6:50 - 6:52
maybe you haven't been in prison,
  • 6:52 - 6:53
but you've been in a situation
  • 6:53 - 6:55
    where immediately you needed something
  • 6:55 - 6:57
and God gave it to you.
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    Brethren, He brings the
    fruits of the Spirit.
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    The chief one is love.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
You just can't get away from it.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
The New Testament is basically this:
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    Christ gave a new commandment.
  • 7:07 - 7:10
That commandment is a commandment of love.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
That is the greatest test of Christianity.
  • 7:12 - 7:13
    Love.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
And the Spirit is the one
    Who gives it to us.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    A love for Christ Himself.
  • 7:16 - 7:22
    A love on the horizontal
    plane for one another.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    A love in the church.
  • 7:24 - 7:25
    We heard about peace.
  • 7:25 - 7:27
    He gives that peace.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
My peace I leave with you.
  • 7:29 - 7:31
Where does that peace come from?
  • 7:31 - 7:34
We find in Galatians 5 distinctly
  • 7:34 - 7:36
that peace comes from the Spirit of God.
  • 7:36 - 7:39
This Spirit is the one Who gives gifts
  • 7:39 - 7:40
    to the church.
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    Do we want gifts?
  • 7:41 - 7:42
    Do we want laborers?
  • 7:42 - 7:44
Do we want men and women
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    who have abilities to minister,
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    to show mercy,
  • 7:48 - 7:51
to give, to teach, to serve?
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    Absolutely!
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    All that gamut of gifts.
  • 7:55 - 7:57
    Even the supernatural element.
  • 7:57 - 7:59
Brethren, it's the Spirit of God
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    that gives those things.
  • 8:01 - 8:04
The Spirit of God is that Spirit
  • 8:04 - 8:06
which we are warned against quenching.
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    Quenching has the idea
  • 8:08 - 8:10
of throwing water on a fire.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
You throw water on a fire,
  • 8:12 - 8:13
    it diminishes its heat.
  • 8:13 - 8:14
    It diminishes its light.
  • 8:14 - 8:17
The Spirit is what infuses the church
  • 8:17 - 8:21
    with light and heat.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
We need to pray for the Spirit.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    When the Spirit helps us,
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    when the Spirit empowers us,
  • 8:27 - 8:29
    it's only then, brethren,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    that we can advance
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    and we can take ground.
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    It's the Spirit of God
  • 8:34 - 8:37
that puts that fire in the
    hearts of men and women
  • 8:37 - 8:40
to go forth, to lay down their lives
  • 8:40 - 8:41
    for the Gospel's sake,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    to sacrifice.
  • 8:43 - 8:45
It's the Holy Spirit that we need
  • 8:45 - 8:48
in order to have a powerful Gospel.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
    It's the Holy Spirit
  • 8:50 - 8:53
that causes men to be born again.
  • 8:53 - 8:54
We want to see life in this church.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
    We want to see growth.
  • 8:56 - 8:57
    Don't we find also,
  • 8:57 - 9:02
what is it about 2 Thessalonians 2:13?
  • 9:02 - 9:04
    1 Thessalonians 2:13
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    We find there, brethren,
  • 9:05 - 9:08
we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    Sanctification. Any kind of growth.
  • 9:10 - 9:13
Don't we also find in 2 Corinthians 3:18,
  • 9:13 - 9:16
that by the Lord Who is the Spirit,
  • 9:16 - 9:19
that's how we behold the glory of Christ?
  • 9:19 - 9:22
And are transformed into His image
  • 9:22 - 9:24
from one degree of glory to another?
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    Brethren, the Spirit of God
  • 9:26 - 9:29
is also an intercessor in our prayers.
  • 9:29 - 9:30
We find that in Romans 8.
  • 9:30 - 9:33
The Spirit is a Spirit of adoption.
  • 9:33 - 9:37
And He bears witness with our spirits
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    that we're children of God.
  • 9:38 - 9:41
    Beloved, do we want
    assurance in this church?
  • 9:41 - 9:42
    I'll tell you what,
  • 9:42 - 9:44
it's when we have a hope of salvation,
  • 9:44 - 9:45
    and a deep-founded assurance
  • 9:45 - 9:47
    that you can lay your
    life down for Christ.
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    People would go around
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    doubting, wondering,
  • 9:50 - 9:52
    not sure if they're in,
    sure if they're out,
  • 9:52 - 9:54
very difficult for people like that
  • 9:54 - 9:57
    to really launch out and
    do anything for Christ.
  • 9:57 - 10:01
Brethren, we need the Spirit's power
  • 10:01 - 10:03
and His working in our midst.
  • 10:03 - 10:06
And what we have here is a promise.
  • 10:06 - 10:08
What we have here is disciples
  • 10:08 - 10:11
    coming to Christ and saying,
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    "Teach us to pray."
  • 10:13 - 10:16
And He wraps up this whole
    instruction on prayer
  • 10:16 - 10:20
    with this: be persistent.
  • 10:20 - 10:22
    Ask and seek and knock.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    And above every other thing
  • 10:24 - 10:28
that He talks to us about asking for,
  • 10:28 - 10:35
    He says seek from your
    Father the Holy Spirit.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
I believe that when it says
    ask for the Holy Spirit,
  • 10:37 - 10:41
the idea is that we are to ask
  • 10:41 - 10:44
    for His influences,
  • 10:44 - 10:49
    for His fiery influences.
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    Brethren, we don't want
    to quench that Spirit.
  • 10:51 - 10:56
We want to ask for it.
  • 10:58 - 11:02
Did that about use up that 20 minutes?
  • 11:02 - 11:05
    Pretty close.
  • 11:09 - 11:15
I just leave you with this thought.
  • 11:15 - 11:17
"How much more will the heavenly Father
  • 11:17 - 11:22
    give the Holy Spirit to
    those who ask Him?"
  • 11:22 - 11:24
Did you catch those last words?
  • 11:24 - 11:33
    To those who ask Him.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    Brethren, you let your Calvinism
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    take you in a direction
  • 11:40 - 11:45
where you logically start to conclude
  • 11:45 - 11:48
that your prayers don't matter -
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    James says you have not
    because you do not ask.
  • 11:51 - 11:54
    Brethren, if you've got
    a sort of Calvinism
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    that doesn't believe that statement,
  • 11:56 - 12:00
    then dump it.
  • 12:00 - 12:01
    Prayer matters.
  • 12:01 - 12:02
    God hears prayer.
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    God gives the Holy Spirit
    to those who ask.
  • 12:05 - 12:09
    Jesus does not say
  • 12:09 - 12:11
that if you don't ask, don't seek,
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    don't knock, God is sovereign,
  • 12:13 - 12:14
    God has His decrees,
  • 12:14 - 12:16
and He's going to do it anyways.
  • 12:16 - 12:18
    He doesn't say that.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
He says He gives the Holy Spirit
  • 12:20 - 12:21
    to them that ask.
  • 12:21 - 12:24
Brethren, God forbid we get to the end
  • 12:24 - 12:26
and we find we could have had more
  • 12:26 - 12:27
if we would have asked for it,
  • 12:27 - 12:30
    but we just didn't ask.
  • 12:30 - 12:35
God help us to not get to that place.
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    Amen.
  • 12:37 - 12:41
    You're dismissed for the moment.
