Comment mettre en pratique les méditations guidées du Village des Pruniers [sous-titré] Sr Chan Duc

  • 0:02 - 0:08
Dear friends, I would like to address some commonly asked questions,
  • 0:09 - 0:19
about guided meditation in Plum Village. The first question we might be asked is: how do we apply
  • 0:20 - 0:29
Plum Village guided sitting meditations, so that we can benefit from them?
  • 0:30 - 0:37
You realize that on this app, we have a number of guided meditations for you to practice.
  • 0:40 - 0:46
The main thing to remember is not to try to use our intellect
  • 0:47 - 0:56
when we are practicing guided meditation. The words of the guided meditation are there
  • 0:57 - 1:05
to touch seeds, we call them seeds; they are potentials in the depths of your consciousness.
  • 1:06 - 1:12
And when those seeds are watered by the words,
  • 1:12 - 1:26
then you can concentrate on that particular feeling that comes up in association with the word.
  • 1:28 - 1:34
If you try and think too much, the guided meditation will not help you.
  • 1:35 - 1:43
In guided meditation images are usually more helpful than abstract ideas,
  • 1:44 - 1:57
so be aware of that. And a word can water an image, and you can use the image in order
  • 1:58 - 2:04
to realize some insight that you may not have ever had before.
  • 2:05 - 2:11
And every time you use a guided meditation, the insight will be a little bit different.
  • 2:12 - 2:18
There is no perfect insight that goes with a particular guided meditation.
  • 2:22 - 2:32
The second question: what can we do if we don't understand the exercise or we cannot experience the exercise?
  • 2:34 - 2:42
For example, we hear "Breathing in, I feel joy" and we don't feel joy...
  • 2:46 - 2:58
So, that is just an example and we should not ever try to experience
  • 2:58 - 3:07
something, some words that we hear. If we don't have an experience we can let go...
  • 3:08 - 3:16
But, the next time when you want to do that meditation, you may like to prepare yourself a little bit...
  • 3:17 - 3:26
You may like to remember times when you have felt a deep joy that came not from things going on around you,
  • 3:27 - 3:34
but came from your own consciousness. And you may remember the incident or the event
  • 3:35 - 3:42
that triggered that sense of joy in you, and you can feel that joy again.
  • 3:44 - 3:48
In our daily life, it is important to recognize
  • 3:50 - 3:59
when we have moments of joy, and to help those moments of joy to last.
  • 3:59 - 4:08
Because the depths of our consciousness are like a ratatouille, like a stew,
  • 4:09 - 4:14
and we put many ingredients in that, and they all, the taste of each ingredient goes into the other ingredients.
  • 4:14 - 4:22
And so that, just by watering the seed of joy every day in your consciousness,
  • 4:22 - 4:29
it will transform some of the suffering, by penetrating the suffering without you having to make an effort to do that.
  • 4:33 - 4:41
What can we do when we haven't realized the exercise but then the next exercise is already coming?
  • 4:42 - 4:51
That is a difficulty that many of us may experience, because everyone needs more time than,
  • 4:51 - 5:00
or a different amount of time for realizing an exercise.
  • 5:00 - 5:06
So if you need more time, the best thing is to try and remember the guided meditation
  • 5:07 - 5:16
and then to practice it on your own. You may like to note down the different stages of the meditation,
  • 5:17 - 5:22
and when you do it on your own, then you can take as long as you like for each part of the exercise.
  • 5:23 - 5:34
Actually, that is really the way for you to use these exercises on the app.
  • 5:34 - 5:41
It's not every time to have to listen to the app, but be able to remember the exercises
  • 5:41 - 5:46
and then practice them for yourself in your own time.
  • 5:46 - 5:50
Are Plum Village guided meditations visualizations?
  • 5:50 - 5:59
What is meant by "Breathing in, I see myself as a flower. Breathing in, I see myself as a mountain" and so on?
  • 6:00 - 6:08
These are images. "Flower" is a word, and when you hear the word "flower"
  • 6:08 - 6:12
and you let it sink into the deep levels of your consciousness,
  • 6:12 - 6:23
then a flower image will appear in your mind and the same is true of a mountain image.
  • 6:23 - 6:31
So you allow any image that comes up, to come up of a flower, and going with that image there is a feeling,
  • 6:32 - 6:38
and the feeling going with the flower image is a feeling of freshness,
  • 6:39 - 6:44
and the feeling going with a mountain image is a feeling of solidity.
  • 6:45 - 6:52
So the image and the feeling, they go together and they keep watering each other so it's like a feedback.
  • 6:53 - 6:59
You have the image and then the feeling, and the feeling leads to the image again and so on.
  • 7:02 - 7:09
Should we stay in one chapter if you're using the book "Blooming of a Lotus"
  • 7:09 - 7:13
until we understand, before we move to another chapter?
  • 7:16 - 7:26
If we're using a book of guided meditations, what has helped me is to be able to know all the guided meditations.
  • 7:27 - 7:32
And then, depending on my state of mind or my need,
  • 7:32 - 7:41
then I will choose the suitable guided meditation for that particular day.
  • 7:42 - 7:51
And if there are days when I feel tired and not so well then I need to do meditations which will help take care of my body,
  • 7:51 - 7:57
help relax my body, calm my body.
  • 7:57 - 8:06
And in relaxing and calming my body, I will relax and calm my mind.
  • 8:07 - 8:14
And when I feel strong and well, I will do some meditation like a meditation on impermanence to be able to see that I'm of the nature to die, and so on.
  • 8:14 - 8:25
But if I'm not in good health, either in my body or my mind, I don't want to do meditations
  • 8:25 - 8:30
like contemplating my own death, or contemplating the death of my loved ones.
  • 8:36 - 8:44
Why in Plum Village is there such an emphasis on breathing and the body in guided meditation?
  • 8:45 - 8:57
Breathing is the basis, breathing is like if you have a truck and that truck can carry things.
  • 8:58 - 9:05
It can also be empty of carrying things and it can take them from one place to another.
  • 9:06 - 9:18
So the breathing is like that, it can take your mind from one place to another, and the thing about meditation is
  • 9:18 - 9:25
that sometimes if we haven't got guidance in our meditation, our mind just goes along in one track,
  • 9:26 - 9:31
or it's like a train, the train goes from Bordeaux to Paris
  • 9:31 - 9:36
and then it goes from Paris to Bordeaux and it goes back and forth on the same track.
  • 9:38 - 9:44
But guided meditation is to try and get our mind out of its normal tracks and go in a different direction.
  • 9:47 - 9:56
So we need our breathing, and when we come back to our breathing and just concentrate on our breathing,
  • 9:56 - 10:01
then we can let go of the normal ways of thinking that we have,
  • 10:01 - 10:06
and allow the meditation to guide us in thinking in a different way,
  • 10:06 - 10:13
or in feeling in a different way, which can bring us insight and transformation.
  • 10:16 - 10:28
And the reason why we often begin with mentioning your body is because mind and body are not two separate realities.
  • 10:29 - 10:36
And in fact what we do is we alienate a little,
  • 10:36 - 10:45
we alienate our body from our mind. Because we may feel that our body is
  • 10:45 - 10:52
a source of suffering and so we take our mind out of our body, away from our body.
  • 10:53 - 11:01
But in fact, our mind isn't at its best when it's separated from our body,
  • 11:01 - 11:10
it isn't its true self when it's separated from our body.
  • 11:10 - 11:17
So it's very important to bring our mind and our body together, and that is what the breathing can do,
  • 11:17 - 11:22
because the breathing is a function of our body, and the breathing is also spirit.
  • 11:24 - 11:31
So we feel our body and we stay in our body
  • 11:33 - 11:39
throughout the meditation exercise. And if at any point you feel that your mind
  • 11:40 - 11:45
is gone out of your body, then it's very important to open your eyes
  • 11:45 - 11:56
and bring your mind and your body back together again.
  • 11:56 - 12:01
So all meditation in Plum Village is about, is meditation that is done with the mind and the body together.
  • 12:03 - 12:06
    Thank you.
