-
Hello! I hope you can hear me. I don't
-
know if anybody's there. I hope I will see
-
some chat messages coming through.
-
This is not an episode of the
Coding Train.
-
Sorry, I am typing my password on
this other computer over here.
-
Do I have to press this to see the chat
-
let me see.
-
um no I see the messages there
-
'Oh hey, I'm alive. Hi! :)'
-
So I wanted to do a video to say 'Hello'.
-
I'm sorry that it's ben about two weeks
-
since I've actually done a video.
-
I don't have a plan for this. I should
-
have made a list of all the things to
-
talk about. 'Hello Boston. Hi hi hi hi hi'
-
See so many wonderful chat messages. I
-
can't believe there are already 202 people
-
here. So if you didn't see Twitter or
-
where ever else I might've posted this.
-
I unfortunately was in a bicycle accident.
-
I was the on riding the bicycle. The
-
bicycle accident was with the street and
-
mostly my elbow. And I'm trying to figure
-
out how to look at you. Where's the
-
camera? If I look over there, that's me
-
looking at you. Yes that's the camera.
-
So this happened almost a week and a half
-
ago, and just to let you know. This arm is
-
pretty much broken, mostly in the elbow is
-
the major area of destruction. This wrist
-
is also broken. It's possible that this
-
wrist is broken, but it's pretty
-
stabilised and will probably heal anyway
if it is.
-
I had surgery on the elbow to get it put
-
back together; there is now some metal in
-
my arm. I believe, I might've been in a
-
fog of the daze, but I think the surgeon
-
said they put some artificial bone that's
-
made out of coral in my arm. And so I'm
-
wondering if the universe is trying to
-
tell me something about machine learning.
-
First of all, I know this is totally
-
eschew. I will try to get a better setup
-
to do videos, streaming from my home.
-
I'm at my home now.
-
I think I've done one live stream from a
-
park and everything else has been from my
-
studio. I don't know if you guys remember,
-
but the first time that I started to do a
-
video about machine learning. I said,
-
"Something, something, machine learning."
-
and the fire alarm went off. Then I just
-
got started with my machine learning
-
videos and once I got started with that, I
-
just went to one day of the O'Reilly
-
Artificial Intelligence Conference, which
-
was really extraordinary. I went to this
-
wonderful Reinforcement Learning workshop
-
and I'm forgetting the fella's name who
-
ran the workshop. But anyway, then right
-
after that workshop, as I was riding a
-
bike to go to a dinner, that's when I had
-
the accident. If you're joining late you
-
can see I have some injuries here.
-
Uhm ... So ... Uhhhhhhh ..
-
Anyway, so I don't know what the universe
-
is trying to tell about this coding machine
-
stuff, but I will get better. I was
-
wearing a helmet. The first thing I
-
should've said at the very beginning of
-
this video is 'Please wear your helmet'.
-
My whole lip was split, my tooth is messed
-
up, these glasses were totally broken.
-
I should go get my helmet. Hold on a
-
second, I'm going to get my helmet to show
-
you the scratches. You can look at this
-
Not Synced
beautiful poster; this is my
favourite poster. It's a
-
Not Synced
poster of every single bird
of North America,
-
Not Synced
the complete collection which. tore my
apartment Talk amongst
-
Not Synced
yourselves, I'm going to get my helmet.
-
Not Synced
Here's a unicorn for you to look at. Oh,
-
Not Synced
you can't see the unicorn. Here. There you
-
Not Synced
go. Look at the unicorn while I go get my
-
Not Synced
helmet. I should've worn headphones.
-
Not Synced
Coming back now with the helmet.
Ok.
-
Not Synced
Here's the helmet. Let's see if we can
-
Not Synced
find the part that's all scratched up. It
-
Not Synced
actually doesn't look like much. I don't
-
Not Synced
know if this will come through.
-
Not Synced
I don't know if you can see those
-
Not Synced
scratches and scrapes on the side of the
-
Not Synced
helmet. And that that is the side that hit
-
Not Synced
the ground. I assume.
-
Not Synced
I did not lose consciousness. I did have
-
Not Synced
a head CT scan which was negative.
-
Not Synced
And yes, CellOfTheBride in the chat is
-
Not Synced
saying 'Get a new helmet'.
-
Not Synced
So if you didn't know this, which I did
-
Not Synced
know, helmets are only good for one crash.
-
Not Synced
Kind of like car seats, same thing for
-
Not Synced
kid's car seats.
-
Not Synced
So, sorry for everybody who's bored by
-
Not Synced
this. So I need to get a new helmet.
-
Not Synced
But to be honest with you, I think it
-
Not Synced
might be a while before I ride a bicycle
-
Not Synced
again, certainly in the city. Yeah.
-
Not Synced
I do need to shave. It's going to be a
-
Not Synced
while before I shave. I did get the
-
Not Synced
glasses fixed which was I was talking
-
Not Synced
about. Some people are asking a bit more
-
Not Synced
about the accident.
-
Not Synced
It's not really a great story to this, but
-
Not Synced
I guess I will tell it since people are
-
Not Synced
interested.
-
Not Synced
I was riding in Midtown, which I don't
-
Not Synced
usually do, I kind of only ever ride along
-
Not Synced
the West-Side Highway bike path because
-
Not Synced
I'm a little bit afraid of riding in the
-
Not Synced
city. Which makes sense.
-
Not Synced
I was riding in Midtown and there was a
-
Not Synced
street where the bike lane had a lip.
-
Not Synced
Like the bike lane was not in the same
-
Not Synced
level as the street and I went out of the
-
Not Synced
bike lane down the lip to go around
-
Not Synced
something. I think there was a car parked
-
Not Synced
there. It kind of happened sort of fast, so
-
Not Synced
I don't totally remember. And then,
-
Not Synced
when I turned to back in the bike lane
-
Not Synced
kind of avoiding traffic and kind of going
quickly. I just wasn't
-
Not Synced
careful and didn't really pay attention.
-
Not Synced
I think I was never in the bike lane when
-
Not Synced
I turned onto the street and that's
-
Not Synced
partially why I didn't notice the lip. I
-
Not Synced
was just not in the bike lane because I
-
Not Synced
had to go past a car and when I went into
-
Not Synced
the bike lane - If I just had stopped and
-
Not Synced
pit walk the bike up.
So I don't really know
-
Not Synced
what happened. I don't really remember.
-
Not Synced
I think I would say that I just fell
-
Not Synced
sideways. I assume my whole right side of
-
Not Synced
my body just hit the ground, cause the
-
Not Synced
elbow must've been what hit first and
-
Not Synced
shattered. This wrist must've tried to
-
Not Synced
brace myself and my lip was cut and
-
Not Synced
glasses were smashed and this side of the
-
Not Synced
face was also it.
-
Not Synced
So anyway, that's the story. And actually
-
Not Synced
some nice car stopped to say 'Are you ok?'
-
Not Synced
I pulled the bike out the street and got
-
Not Synced
to the side and leaned against the post.
-
Not Synced
But a very nice man stopped and offered
-
Not Synced
to take the bike back, helped me get some
-
Not Synced
tissues out of my backpack for me so I
-
Not Synced
could put those on lip which was bleeding
-
Not Synced
quite a bit and helped me on phone to find
-
Not Synced
the nearest urgent care which I then
-
Not Synced
walked to. Cause I really actually thought
-
Not Synced
oh I cut my face and I probably bruised
-
Not Synced
my arm. I guess I can't go to this dinner
-
Not Synced
I was gonna go to, oh that will be a nice
-
Not Synced
excuse to not go to the dinner. Then
-
Not Synced
once I got to the urgent care, it was
-
Not Synced
quite obvious that my entire - nobody
-
Not Synced
wants to see these photos. There was a
-
Not Synced
swelling in my elbow that rivals the size
-
Not Synced
of this helmet. It was quite big. We're
-
Not Synced
talking about a large mango sized swollen
-
Not Synced
elbow.
-
Not Synced
Anyway, all said and done, I'm fine.
-
Not Synced
But I have to go on hiatus a little bit.
-
Not Synced
In terms of the kind of video I typically
-
Not Synced
make. I can not type right now. I don't
-
Not Synced
really have use - I mean I have some use
-
Not Synced
of this arm. I'm trying to be very
-
Not Synced
minimal about it, because the goal here
-
Not Synced
is for this to heal on its own without
-
Not Synced
having to have a second surgery on this
-
Not Synced
wrist. I should know more; I have another
-
Not Synced
appointment with a surgeon. Interestingly
-
Not Synced
enough, of course the surgeon started
-
Not Synced
talking to me about machine learning and
-
Not Synced
using machine learning to, you know,
-
Not Synced
diagnose disease and medically treat it.
-
Not Synced
So I'm trying to figure out what to do.
-
Not Synced
Couple things I'll mention. I'm seeing a
-
Not Synced
lot of wonderful messages, messages of
-
Not Synced
support. I'll read through those later.
-
Not Synced
Couple things: One is now is a nice time
-
Not Synced
for you to support the processing
-
Not Synced
foundation, processingfoundation.org,
-
Not Synced
while I'm on break, if you're looking for
-
Not Synced
something to support. If you want to
-
Not Synced
become a patron through my patreon:
-
Not Synced
patreon.com/codingtrain. If someone could
-
Not Synced
post that link in the chat. I'm going to
-
Not Synced
put it on pause while I take a break.
-
Not Synced
There's going to be at least 4 weeks of
-
Not Synced
losing in making video. You'll still get
-
Not Synced
an invite to the Slack community and
-
Not Synced
everything I have been growing around the
-
Not Synced
channel.
-
Not Synced
What else do I want to say?
-
Not Synced
I do have a couple people who might
-
Not Synced
hopefully work out to do some guest
-
Not Synced
videos. And so, the guest videos -
-
Not Synced
Oh, Kurt in the chat saying Connor
-
Not Synced
McDonald is doing a p5.js vision workshop
-
Not Synced
in Berlin, that's interesting.
-
Not Synced
I could do some live streams from my
-
Not Synced
apartment like I'm doing right now. I
-
Not Synced
had an idea to do some office hours or
-
Not Synced
something. But I loathe to create
-
Not Synced
something overly complicated. We have
-
Not Synced
enough stuff to keep up in the air. I
-
Not Synced
was also thinking of getting that Random
-
Not Synced
Number's book and just live stream all day
-
Not Synced
and read. [Please]
-
Not Synced
And I can definitely do a live stream Q&A.
-
Not Synced
I'm gonna go, sorry this computer just
-
Not Synced
keeps going to sleep. I have a second
-
Not Synced
computer to the side of me here.
-
Not Synced
I'm going to check.
-
Not Synced
It doesn't look like there's anything here.
-
Not Synced
I'm looking at the slack channel and see
-
Not Synced
if there's anything posted there.
-
Not Synced
I wanted to mention something about the
-
Not Synced
Patreon too. In terms of the Patreon
-
Not Synced
rewards - I can type better than write on
-
Not Synced
a whiteboard right now. Unfortunately,
-
Not Synced
this is my left hand, so if this were my
-
Not Synced
right hand I might be able to write, but
-
Not Synced
this arm I mostly have it in a sling and
-
Not Synced
completely immobilized. You can see I'm
-
Not Synced
all kind of like still cut up on the hand
-
Not Synced
and stuff here. And this arm, I can't
-
Not Synced
really use at all.
-
Not Synced
So.. Ah! I wanted to mention something
-
Not Synced
about the Patreon rewards. If you decide
-
Not Synced
to join the Patreon, those rewards can
-
Not Synced
take up to 6 months to a year for me to
-
Not Synced
get to you. I have somebody who helps me
-
Not Synced
with this by mostly shipping them out.
-
Not Synced
You know every few months, I have a day to
-
Not Synced
get a bunch of books together and put them
-
Not Synced
in packages. So if people are interested
-
Not Synced
in the books, the actual things that are
-
Not Synced
the rewards, then they should just buy
-
Not Synced
them directly rather than join the
-
Not Synced
Patreon, but you will get them.
-
Not Synced
And also, the actual expense of getting
-
Not Synced
the book and shipping it, it really costs
-
Not Synced
as much as someone backing the channel for
-
Not Synced
5 to 6 months depending on where you live
-
Not Synced
around the world.
-
Not Synced
Anyway so that's another reason why I, uh-
-
Not Synced
Do you guys hear a lot of noise. I'm
-
Not Synced
seeing a lot of those.
-
Not Synced
Ok!
-
Not Synced
Let me try to answer some of these
-
Not Synced
questions. 'How soon will you get back to
-
Not Synced
your regular coding videos?'
-
Not Synced
I hope to have an update on that at the
-
Not Synced
end of next week. So I have an appointment
-
Not Synced
with the surgeon. They're gonna take off
-
Not Synced
what's on my arm right now and have
-
Not Synced
another look at it and put something else
-
Not Synced
on it. And hopefully I'll have a better
-
Not Synced
sense of scheduling then.
-
Not Synced
Timothy is asking 'Tell me about the
-
Not Synced
accident'
-
Not Synced
This will be archived and I'll leave this
-
Not Synced
online and I won't put ads on it or
-
Not Synced
anything and so you'll be able to watch
-
Not Synced
that, where I talked about the accident.
-
Not Synced
My arm really does itch. I'm sorry the
-
Not Synced
stream is terrible. I thought I had such a
-
Not Synced
good Verizon FiOS connection at my house,
-
Not Synced
but I guess not. I wonder if this iPad is
-
Not Synced
not so great at it.
-
Not Synced
'Do I watch much YouTube? And if so, what
-
Not Synced
channels?'
-
Not Synced
I don't watch much YouTube. I think it's
-
Not Synced
a old folgy [what?] thing. But I've been
-
Not Synced
watching this 3Blue1Brown Calculus videos.
-
Not Synced
And, Srirodges [sp?] videos and also The
-
Not Synced
Happy Cats videos, so I guess I do watch
-
Not Synced
a lot of YouTube.
-
Not Synced
Well great, I'm glad people are saying the
-
Not Synced
quality is fine.
-
Not Synced
I do know Computerphile; I haven't watched
-
Not Synced
it very much.
-
Not Synced
I'm reading the chat to look for more
-
Not Synced
questions. (Slightly amused chuckle)
-
Not Synced
'Do I watch Tom Scott's videos?'
-
Not Synced
I've heard the name, but I have not
watched Tom Scott's videos.
-
Not Synced
'Can you do some videos about you and
history with coding?
-
Not Synced
I could do that. I could do some some
talking videos.
-
Not Synced
I'm not really a production value/video
editing kind of person.
-
Not Synced
So it's just going to be me rambling, kind
of like this. Which I don't know if
-
Not Synced
anybody really wants to watch.
-
Not Synced
Oh, FunFunFunction I also like to watch.
-
Not Synced
I know that he does these great musings
which is just kind of talking.
-
Not Synced
But I feel like they're just tightly
thought out and planned and edited.
-
Not Synced
I don't know if I could do that.
-
Not Synced
'Are you in pain?' Somebody asked.
-
Not Synced
Yes, it's painful, but it's not so bad.
And it's getting much better now
-
Not Synced
especially after the surgery. I didn't
realize the surgery was more difficult to
-
Not Synced
recover from than the accident itself.
-
Not Synced
The accident was just scary and weird and
they wrapped everything up and I was kind
-
Not Synced
of feeling ok. But once I had the surgery,
I had a lot of soreness and pain in my
-
Not Synced
right side. I'm definitely going to have
a lot of physical therapy.
-
Not Synced
'High-tech games?' (chuckles no)
-
Not Synced
'How far was it for me to walk to the
Urgent Care?'
-
Not Synced
I think it was probably, if I had to
guess, half a kilometer/quarter of a mile.
-
Not Synced
I haven't been out much. I live near
Central Park which is lucky.
-
Not Synced
I've been going for walks there which is
pretty nice.
-
Not Synced
'Is my Pink Book written in Java or
JavaScript?'
-
Not Synced
One of the things that I'm really sad
about is - This month, in a way this is a
-
Not Synced
lucky time for me. I'm not teaching in
summer times. - I've had to adjust
-
Not Synced
travel plans. I can't do some of my travel
plans. Workwise this is a low-stress time
-
Not Synced
for me to just relax at home and heal. But
because I have this time period of so much
-
Not Synced
extra time on my hands, I was going to
really work on finally finishing up the
-
Not Synced
new Chapter 10 and 2nd edition of the
Nature of Code, the Pink Book.
-
Not Synced
That's going to be difficult for me to do.
-
Not Synced
If anybody has any ideas for things I can
do or ways that you can help, I'm totally
-
Not Synced
open to that.
-
Not Synced
Anyway, the Pink Book is written in Java.
All the examples are reported to
-
Not Synced
JavaScript, that's the Nature of Code book
and I was planning to have a 2nd Ed. done
-
Not Synced
by the end of the summer and I don't know
that might be a little bit [difficult].
-
Not Synced
'Learn ES6'! That's perfect.
-
Not Synced
So I was thinking of doing a video course
or a reading [on ES6].
-
Not Synced
This is a little ironic that I think I
prefer to learn by reading books than
-
Not Synced
watching videos. So if anybody has any
suggestions on -
-
Not Synced
It's hard for me to read a book that I
have to flip the pages, but I can read on
-
Not Synced
the Kindle really easily.
-
Not Synced
- So programming books about creative
coding, machine learning, ES6, maybe React
-
Not Synced
I shouldn't do anything that's useful so
I shouldn't learn React.
-
Not Synced
If you guys have recommendations of that
that I can read on the Kindle that would
-
Not Synced
be useful. Tweet me @Shiffman is the best
way to give me your recommendations.
-
Not Synced
I could do a video on book recommendation
myself.
-
Not Synced
Hi, Chris!
-
Not Synced
'Do I play video games normally?'
Not really, I used to.
-
Not Synced
If you guys are resourceful, you can find
an old New York Times article about my
-
Not Synced
video games playing. [Title: I Don't Know
Who You Are, But You're Toast]
-
Not Synced
There are two NYT articles about me. The
video game was about 2001 [1998] and
-
Not Synced
another one about some artwork in 2003
which I'm less excited about.
-
Not Synced
Find that old NYT article and tweet it at
me.
-
Not Synced
Bungie was this company, that I guess now
makes Halo, that was bought by Microsoft,
-
Not Synced
But I played their early games, Myth: The
Fallen Lords, was the game that I played
-
Not Synced
the most. Also Marathon. Anybody play
these games? These were old, old times.
-
Not Synced
Oh! And I do have some exciting news to
report which is that progress is being
-
Not Synced
made on music video. I actually shot the
new music video which is really lucky
-
Not Synced
cause I did all sorts of ridiculous stuff
in the music video that I would not be
-
Not Synced
able to do now with all my broken limbs.
-
Not Synced
Wow, Josh found one of the articles, 'What
If Jackson Pollock Were a PC?'. There's
-
Not Synced
another one written two years earlier by
Michel Michaels or Michael Michel
-
Not Synced
[Michel Marriott]
-
Not Synced
I met him when I was at a game conference
at Javits Center just as a fan. He started
-
Not Synced
asking me questions about gaming.
-
Not Synced
'Old school Bungie' that's exactly right
PeaDoll615.
-
Not Synced
'I Don't Know Who You Are, But You're
Toast' That's it. Is it still online?
-
Not Synced
My age is 43, and my birthday is July 29th
coming up soon.
-
Not Synced
I think I started answering the question
of 'When do I expect to be making coding
-
Not Synced
videos again?' I certainly got the sense
from the doctors that by the Fall I would
-
Not Synced
be able to teach my classes without much
of an issue. I mention that I do a lot of
-
Not Synced
writing on a whiteboard. But I'm hoping,
if I had a goal for myself, for beginning
-
Not Synced
of August, but we'll see if that's
realistic or not.
-
Not Synced
'What do I think about MATLab?' MATLab
looks awesome to me; I don't know it very
-
Not Synced
well.
-
Not Synced
Eat a lot of eggs and yogurt, calcium.
That is good advice. I was actually
-
Not Synced
wondering what was good for bone healing.
I was told protein was good too.
-
Not Synced
I do eat a lot of yogurt. I do have kids.
This is my daughter's unicorn stuffie.
-
Not Synced
It's not my own. They're not here right
now; I'm actually home by myself.
-
Not Synced
Just finished a puzzle, this is puzzle
that I did with my kids last night that's
-
Not Synced
sitting over there. I'll show it to you.
This is the puzzle that we did together,
-
Not Synced
the glitter puzzle. The Glitter Princess,
a 100 pieces. 100 pieces is the perfect
-
Not Synced
puzzle for a 6-year old. There's a wand
here too. There's just like random toys.
-
Not Synced
Anyway, 'Do I know any working picture
detection algorithm for Processing?'
-
Not Synced
Hmm, I don't. I'm trying to think if the
Processing library does that.
-
Not Synced
'Next Challenge: Tetris JavaScript w/out
Canvas' that's really interesting.
-
Not Synced
I would probably do ... it with Canvas.
-
Not Synced
'Do you think VR programming will be in
high-demand?'
-
Not Synced
Hey Kyle Greenberg! Kyle has helped me a
lot with this channel. Kyle is a
-
Not Synced
researcher, an IT alum at where I teach,
who is here in the chat.
-
Not Synced
What was I just talking about? Ugchh,
brain. I was talking about ..
-
Not Synced
the Tetris Coding Challenge. I would love
to do that.
-
Not Synced
Oh, VR games! Do you the nice thing about
this? This live streaming has a less of a
-
Not Synced
delay than the usual setup that I have.
-
Not Synced
So, VR programming. What the students are
interested in and hyped up about at NYU,
-
Not Synced
there is certainly quite a bit of activity
and interest around storytelling and
-
Not Synced
related interactive experimental works
with VR.
-
Not Synced
Now, I think Gabe, who I work with at ITP,
has said this, but he likes to think of
-
Not Synced
the field more as of an experimental
cinema, 360 cinema.
-
Not Synced
I think VR is a small piece of what's
happening with video and the ability
-
Not Synced
to manipulate and work with video in new
immersive environments, AR, VR, 3D, etc.
-
Not Synced
But I would love to learn and get better
at is working with environments like
-
Not Synced
Unity, Real Engine, and different
environments like that where you can do
-
Not Synced
programming.
-

Fungilious asked 'Is there a Slack channel
for the Coding Train?'
-
Not Synced
There is a slack channel, but it's
currently open to only Patreon subscribers
-
Not Synced
right now. That doesn't preclude anybody
from making their own community Slack
-
Not Synced
channel, but that's one of the ways that
I am using crowd funding to raise a little
-
Not Synced
money for the work that I am doing. Which
is to use Patreon for membership to the
-
Not Synced
Slack channel. There is also a Discord
that I don't know too much about, but

NickTucker asks 'What role does AI play in

-

Interesting question. I can't claim to

-
Not Synced
But if you think about image
classification and how often doctors and
-
Not Synced
medical professionals use images to make
diagnoses from echocardiograms, you could
-
Not Synced
imagine that, though I'm really
speculating without knowledge of the
-
Not Synced
healthcare industry or anything, but I
could imagine a scenario where you had a
-
Not Synced
large dataset of images of broken and
unbroken arms then you could train an
-
Not Synced
image classifier to recognize broken vs.
non-broken arms. So that's kind of a
