A Sustainable Heart | Sister True Dedication

  • 0:02 - 0:06
The way we consume depends on how our heart is.
  • 0:08 - 0:13
And we cannot hope to consume in an awakened way if our heart is not at peace.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
And each one of us are agents of consumption.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
That is one of our biggest actions in relation to the Earth, how we are consuming,
  • 0:24 - 0:30
and when we can fulfill ourselves with dwelling happily in the present moment,
  • 0:30 - 0:35
when we can fulfill ourselves with healthy relationships,
  • 0:35 - 0:40
when we can fulfill ourselves with our own compassion for ourself,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
we don't need to be excessive consumers.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    There's no need.
  • 0:46 - 0:55
So already, to cultivate the energy of mindfulness, we can calm the craving and the consuming.
  • 0:56 - 1:02
And when we can cultivate peace in ourself, it's much easier to create peace
  • 1:02 - 1:05
with our friends and with our colleagues.
  • 1:05 - 1:11
And in any actions we would like to undertake to help protect the Earth.
  • 1:12 - 1:19
So there is a foundation in our mindfulness practice for good relationships.
  • 1:20 - 1:30
And if we are angry, if we are competitive, if we are resentful and blaming when we are trying to protect the Earth,
  • 1:31 - 1:39
and we have already ourselves become a toxin on the Earth with the energy of anger or hatred or blaming.
  • 1:39 - 1:49
So somehow the mindfulness practices of deep listening, loving speech, openness, inclusiveness, patience,
  • 1:50 - 1:58
deep looking and understanding that we cultivate on a retreat all of these qualities we bring to our actions to protect the Earth,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
whether they are political actions, economic actions,
  • 2:03 - 2:10
nurturing actions, new projects to plant trees or forests or to
  • 2:11 - 2:15
to develop any kind of project to take care of the Earth.
  • 2:16 - 2:22
It needs to have these elements of compassion, understanding and fellowship of brotherhood and sisterhood.
  • 2:30 - 2:35
There is something about Plum village, that's about sustainability,
  • 2:35 - 2:41
we do not burn ourselves out trying to protect the Earth,
  • 2:41 - 2:45
and we are part of the Earth and taking care of the Earth,
  • 2:45 - 2:47
we also need to take care of ourselves.
  • 2:48 - 2:54
So here in Plum Village, we offer a community that is a refuge to take care of ourselves,
  • 2:54 - 3:03
so we can have a kind of deep, profound well-being inside, taking care of our despair, taking care of our fear,
  • 3:04 - 3:09
taking care of our anger, frustration, our feeling of powerlessness.
  • 3:10 - 3:18
And when we are balanced, spacious and fearless inside,
  • 3:18 - 3:25
then we have an incredible resource of energy to be able to make good choices about how to act,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
what to do and what not to do,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
individually and collectively, in order to really help.
