Are You Defensive? - Mack Tomlinson

  • 0:00 - 0:05
    Our perception is clouded
  • 0:05 - 0:09
    usually about ourselves.
  • 0:09 - 0:12
And when others who love us see us
  • 0:12 - 0:14
and speak into our lives about something,
  • 0:14 - 0:17
we better be sure to be honest
  • 0:17 - 0:20
and face the fact they're seeing
  • 0:20 - 0:24
    what's probably true
    and I'm not seeing it.
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    Because they wouldn't
    be sharing it with you
  • 0:27 - 0:28
    if they didn't love you.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    Faithful are the what?
  • 0:30 - 0:34
    Wounds of a friend.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    Kisses and flattery are deceitful.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    Are you teachable?
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    Are you approachable?
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    Today, are you possibly
wrong in areas you don't see?
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    Are you correctable?
  • 0:53 - 0:56
Men, when your wife shares something
  • 0:56 - 0:58
that they see, do you get self-defensive?
  • 0:58 - 1:04
    Do you get defensive?
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    I can't mark the year,
  • 1:06 - 1:10
but I was at least three
    decades into marriage
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    before I stopped being defensive
  • 1:12 - 1:14
when Linda would share something with me.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    Grow up.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    I mean, come on.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
She loves me more than anybody.
  • 1:19 - 1:20
She knows me more than anybody.
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    Why can't I just listen?
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    She might be right.
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    And I learned, yeah,
she's right most of the time.
  • 1:28 - 1:32
I'm not saying anything other than
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    those closest to you -
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    your husband, your wife -
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    when they share things,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    don't get defensive.
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    Just listen.
  • 1:42 - 1:45
How defensive of a person are you?
  • 1:45 - 1:47
Are you open to others pointing out
  • 1:47 - 1:50
    and helping you with
    blind spots you don't see
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    that are there?
  • 1:52 - 1:56
Or do you say, no, I'm good.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
And you avoid, you're in denial.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    You go on being needy.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
And your blindspot is nakedly clear
  • 2:03 - 2:07
    to everybody but you.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    Romans 2 kind of talks
    about that, doesn't it?
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    You who teach others...
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    you who say don't steal,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    don't commit adultery.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
So we can see needs in others clearly.
  • 2:22 - 2:27
    We have 20/20 vision.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    And we have spiritual cataracts
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    when we look at ourselves.
  • 2:31 - 2:34
    We see others clearly,
but do we see ourselves clearly?
  • 2:34 - 2:37
Others see clearly what is true about me.
  • 2:37 - 2:43
    Others see us better and
    more clearly than ourselves.
  • 2:43 - 2:45
I have known and loved preachers
  • 2:45 - 2:48
who did not know when to stop preaching.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
Some of you have seen that.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
They didn't know when to stop.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
They didn't have it anymore - the clarity.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    They kept preaching,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
and no one had the courage
  • 3:01 - 3:05
    or loved them enough
to go to them and say,
  • 3:05 - 3:08
    brother, it's time.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
I told my elders don't you let me preach
  • 3:10 - 3:14
    one sermon longer than
    I can deliver the goods.
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    Don't let me preach.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    And if I get dementia,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    you've already heard me
say it with a clear mind.
  • 3:21 - 3:26
Don't let me preach longer than I should.
  • 3:26 - 3:32
    Christ has x-ray vision, right?
  • 3:32 - 3:35
To the deepest needs of our lives.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    Leonard Ravenhill helped
    write a book years ago.
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    It was called, "Christ's
    Paralyzed Church X-Ray."
  • 3:44 - 3:47
    Do you remember that?
  • 3:47 - 3:51
    And it was talking about
    the seven churches.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    Christ sees right through perfectly,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    intimately, thoroughly.
  • 3:55 - 4:00
He sees every atom of your being
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    and your DNA right now.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
Your deepest thoughts before they come,
  • 4:04 - 4:07
    He knows them altogether.
  • 4:07 - 4:13
    He sees our motives.
  • 4:13 - 4:17
    Why don't we face Him
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    about our blind spots?
  • 4:19 - 4:20
Do you know how you would excel
  • 4:20 - 4:25
and take off in joy and freedom
  • 4:25 - 4:29
if you let God by His Spirit
  • 4:29 - 4:33
put His finger on your blind spots
  • 4:33 - 4:35
and let Him deal with them?
  • 4:35 - 4:38
    It hurts,
  • 4:38 - 4:40
but it's going to hurt worse not to.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
    This excerpt was taken
    from the full sermon:
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    "You and Your Blind Spots"
