A Letter From Fred - "Oh Sweet Lorraine" An Amazing Song Written by 96 year-old!

  • 0:02 - 0:06
Earlier this summer Green Shoe Studio launched its singer-songwriter contest
  • 0:06 - 0:10
It's a contest that someone can upload a
video on to YouTube and send us the link.
  • 0:10 - 0:15
we thought it was a good way that we
could really tie into the local community
  • 0:15 - 0:18
and really get a feel for the music
    that's going on around here.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
But we didn't quite expect an entry like
    Fred's.
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    How did I meet Lorraine?
  • 0:51 - 0:56
She was a car hop at the A & W root beer stand in this period.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
And she brought the trays to the car and...
  • 0:59 - 1:04
    that was in... about 1938.
  • 1:05 - 1:08
We dated for two years. Then we married.
  • 1:08 - 1:12
June 26th have been our 73rd anniversary.
  • 1:12 - 1:15
She gave me 75 years of her life.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Well, she was...
  • 1:20 - 1:23
just the prettiest girl I ever saw.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
She was real timid like and...
  • 1:29 - 1:33
I just fell in love with her right there.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
What made Fred's entry so special to us
  • 1:40 - 1:43
was, for number one, it's an online
    singer-songwriter contest.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
People are supposed to upload their videos
  • 1:45 - 1:49
but instead of a video we received a very
    large manilla envelope
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    titled Green Shoe Studio Singer
    Songwriter contest.
  • 1:53 - 1:56
Well, I was excited to see what it was and
    open it up and
  • 1:56 - 2:01
lo and behold it was a letter from a 96-year-old
man who said "I've written a song for my wife".
  • 2:01 - 2:04
He said on the, you know, in the letter
that he was not a musician
  • 2:04 - 2:07
and that said he was not actually a very
    good singer.
  • 2:07 - 2:12
In fact, on the actual envelope itself it says
  • 2:13 - 2:17
"PS: I don't sing. I would scare people... haha".
  • 2:17 - 2:21
So, it's a letter from this
96-year-old man, he sounds like a sweet guy.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
But as I am reading through the letter,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
I begin to realize that his wife has just
    passed away
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    a month earlier. And so
  • 2:31 - 2:36
having known that I started reading through the song
and he titled it "Sweet Lorraine"
  • 2:36 - 2:39
and listening to the lyrics and the passion
    behind the lyrics
  • 2:39 - 2:44
and the letter he sent us it was just so
    heartwarming.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    Well,
  • 2:47 - 2:49
    after she passed away
  • 2:50 - 2:53
I was just sitting in the front room one evening all by myself
  • 2:53 - 2:57
and it just come right to me almost
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and I just kept humming it and singing it and that
  • 3:00 - 3:03
and that's how I come to write it. Just seemed like this just fit her.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
Green Shoe Studio decided to take Fred's lyrics
  • 3:06 - 3:11
and bring them to life. We decided to put
    it to professional music,
  • 3:11 - 3:17
professionally record it. We wanted to
have a professional singer sing on the song.
  • 3:17 - 3:21
You know, our mission here at Green Shoe studio is
to change our community one dream at a time.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
and what a better way to do it?
  • 3:23 - 3:30
Well, I saw Jacobs's ad in the paper
  • 3:30 - 3:33
About the contest that he was going to put on
  • 3:33 - 3:39
so I just thought, "Oh shoot, I'll just write a letter and send it all in".
  • 3:39 - 3:45
And, you know, never thinking that I'd get an answer or something but then...
  • 3:45 - 3:48
He called one day and I... I was surprised!
  • 3:49 - 3:53
We decided we're going to do this just
by reading a letter without even meeting Fred
  • 3:53 - 3:56
So, I called him up one day and said
  • 3:56 - 4:01
"Fred, we were touched by your story. Now it
didn't meet the criteria of our
  • 4:01 - 4:05
singer-songwriter contest but we are going to do
    something even better for you,
  • 4:05 - 4:08
said we're gonna record your song. We're
    gonna
  • 4:08 - 4:12
have professionals to do this, we're gonna have a professional take so that, you know,
  • 4:12 - 4:15
it's not just lyrics anymore. It's
    bringing it to life
  • 4:15 - 4:18
and he goes all that "It's just so great but,
you know, how much is that going to cost?
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    I don't have money".
  • 4:20 - 4:23
And I said "Fred you misunderstand me.
We're going to do all this for free".
  • 4:23 - 4:27
And he began to cry on the phone and
say "why would you do this for me?"
  • 4:27 - 4:30
And I said to Fred "It's not...
  • 4:30 - 4:34
It's not that we're doing this for you.
    We're doing this together
  • 4:34 - 4:37
because music means so much to so many people and
  • 4:37 - 4:43
your song touched us and we feel like
this is the best way to do this".
  • 4:43 - 4:50
(singing) Oh, Sweet Lorraine, I wish we could do the good times all over again.
  • 4:50 - 4:56
Oh, Sweet Lorraine, life only goes around once but never again.
  • 4:56 - 5:02
Oh, Sweet Lorraine, I wish we could do the good times all over again.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
The good times all over again.
  • 5:04 - 5:08
But the memories will always linger on.
  • 5:08 - 5:14
Oh, Sweet Lorraine, the memories will always linger on.
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    Very Cool!
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    I liked that.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
I probably spent more time with his
    song
  • 5:23 - 5:26
that I have with most other people's songs.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
To be honest, I was a
little nervous taking it to him.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
I've been singer and songwriter for years but,
  • 5:33 - 5:36
I must admit, this is the first time in
probably 10 years I've actually been nervous
  • 5:36 - 5:39
giving someone a song that we have taken
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    because it meant so much
to him and meant so much to me.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    I hope you like it.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
And what I said, it's not done yet but I will
    let you hear it. Ok?
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    Tell me when you're ready.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    Yeah, ok
  • 6:04 - 6:08
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 6:08 - 6:13
I wish we could do all the good times over again.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 6:16 - 6:22
life only goes around once but never again.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 6:25 - 6:30
I wish we could do all the good times over again...
  • 6:30 - 6:38
The good times, the good times, the good times all over again...
  • 6:38 - 6:49
The good times, the good times, the good times all over again...
  • 6:49 - 6:54
But the memories always linger on,
  • 6:54 - 6:58
Oh, Sweet Lorraine, that I don't want to move on
  • 6:58 - 7:02
all the memories always linger on,
  • 7:02 - 7:09
Oh, Sweet Lorraine, that's why I wrote you this song.
  • 7:10 - 7:14
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 7:14 - 7:19
I wish we could do all the good times over again.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 7:22 - 7:27
Life only goes around once but never again.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
    Oh, Sweet Lorraine...
  • 7:30 - 7:36
I wish we could do all the good times over again.
  • 7:36 - 7:50
The good times, the good times, all the good times, all over again...
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    Wonderful!
  • 7:55 - 7:55
    Good!
  • 7:55 - 7:56
    This is wonderful!
  • 7:56 - 7:59
Good. I'm glad you like it. So glad you like it.
  • 7:59 - 8:01
    It's wonderful!
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    I was a wonderful seventy-five years.
  • 8:06 - 8:11
I just often think that kinda unreal.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    Dream or something but,
  • 8:14 - 8:20
but it was real. That's all I can say... real
  • 8:25 - 8:29
I really, really miss her. Just don't seem right.
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    Just like a dream...
