Democracy is not a Spectator Sport | Sadhguru

  • 0:07 - 0:12
Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan: Sadhguru, before we go into the issue of politics and corruption,
  • 0:12 - 0:15
because all of us love to hate politicians.
  • 0:15 - 0:17
Sadhguru: I I wouldnt allow that
  • 0:17 - 0:20
because its become a fashion and a fad
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    and almost a compulsion
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    that wherever you go,
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    people are talking politics
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    how horrible the politicians are
  • 0:28 - 0:31
whether they know about it or they dont know about it
  • 0:31 - 0:36
from a tea shop, to an office and wherever else it's happening.
  • 0:36 - 0:41
If you are a responsible citizen,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    what democracy means is,
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    it is the peoples government.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
These politicians did not land from the sky.
  • 0:50 - 0:54
Theyre one among you, who stood up to do something.
  • 0:54 - 0:57
Now for whatever reasons, theyve become the way theyve become.
  • 0:57 - 1:01
You do not know how many have become like that,
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    how many not.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
Were generalizing because we have a certain pleasure
  • 1:04 - 1:07
in painting everything very bleak and black.
  • 1:07 - 1:11
If your nation is important for you
  • 1:11 - 1:17
and if you believe that you have handed over your nation to a bunch of crooks
  • 1:17 - 1:20
and youre sitting here and it's entertainment for you,
  • 1:20 - 1:27
I think it is you who need to be punished, not the corrupt. (Applause)
  • 1:27 - 1:31
Because democracy cannot be a spectator sport,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
    it is a participatory process.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    If I say participatory,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
most peoples understanding of this is,
  • 1:38 - 1:41
if I come out once in five years and vote,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    my responsibility is over.
  • 1:44 - 1:44
    No,
  • 1:44 - 1:48
democracy has various instruments through which you can participate
  • 1:48 - 1:53
on a daily basis in the governance of your country,
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    your state,
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    your city
  • 1:55 - 1:56
    and your street.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    There are various mechanisms.
  • 1:58 - 1:59
    Oh, I dont know.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
    Why you dont know?
  • 2:01 - 2:03
Because youve not cared, isnt it?
  • 2:03 - 2:06
Why you have not educated yourself to know
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    is you have not cared
  • 2:08 - 2:15
because the idea of the nation has not gone deep enough in this country.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
Still, our identifications with our religions,
  • 2:18 - 2:23
our caste, our creed, our family is more predominant
  • 2:23 - 2:27
than the identity of the nation.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
This is the reason why these things are happening.
  • 2:29 - 2:33
So democracy in India is still in an evolutionary state,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    needs lot more evolution
  • 2:35 - 2:39
and nobody has done to educate people
  • 2:39 - 2:41
    as to what is democracy.
  • 2:41 - 2:44
Not enough work has been done.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
It has not been brought into our education systems.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    Social organizations,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
the government itself should have taken it up in a big way to educate people,
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    why democracy.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
See, the moment we vote for our religion,
  • 2:57 - 2:59
or caste or creed or even family,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
if you vote, there is no democracy anymore.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
There is only feudalism, isnt it? (Applause)
  • 3:07 - 3:10
Democracy will be a functional democracy,
  • 3:10 - 3:12
    only when
  • 3:12 - 3:18
you go and vote and you dont know who your wife voted for,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    who your husband voted for
  • 3:20 - 3:21
and you dont want to know.
  • 3:21 - 3:24
Only if you have this kind of integrity,
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    democracy will work.
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    You tell your whole family,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    You vote for this person
  • 3:28 - 3:31
this is not democracy, it's finished.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
Im saying that has not been understood at all.
  • Not Synced
Title:
Democracy is not a Spectator Sport | Sadhguru
Description:

Founder of the Lok Satta Party, Jayaprakash Narayan, asks Sadhguru how India should deal with its corrupt politicians. Sadhguru reminds us that democracy is not a spectator sport, and only when citizens get involved with governance can corruption be eliminated. He looks at why democracy is still in a fledgling state in India, and how the country has not been educated about the fundamentals of democracy.

Yogi, mystic and visionary, Sadhguru is a spiritual master with a difference. An arresting blend of profundity and pragmatism, his life and work serves as a reminder that yoga is a contemporary science, vitally relevant to our times.
