A centripetal force acts perpendicular to an object's velocity. A centripetal force causes an object to accelerate by changing direction and following a curved path. The centripetal force points towards the center of the curve, and the object's velocity is tangent to the curve. Centripetal force is not a type of force, but a role that can be played by different forces. Gravity acts as the centripetal force on orbiting objects.
