Full interview: Samantha Markle speaks to Staci DaSilva

  • Not Synced
[Samantha Markle] It's not just me.
  • Not Synced
It's happening, all around the world,
    to people.
  • Not Synced
    And, these people know
that they can get away with it,
  • Not Synced
if they -- or, they think they can,
  • Not Synced
if they go hide under a VPN.
  • Not Synced
'Hey, they won't know my ISP,
if I do this through a VPN.'
  • Not Synced
    So, it makes it harder
for law enforcement to get them.
  • Not Synced
So, one of the things that
    twitter, and facebook,
  • Not Synced
    and Instagram, and others
    can do,
  • Not Synced
    to help law enforcement,
  • Not Synced
    and help keep their
    participants safe:
  • Not Synced
    biometrics.
  • Not Synced
If you get on your computer,
    to sign in,
  • Not Synced
    you're using face recognition.
  • Not Synced
    Or, your fingerprint.
  • Not Synced
    Or, your -- or your I. D.
  • Not Synced
    Is that a violation
    of freedom and privacy?
  • Not Synced
    Hell, no.
  • Not Synced
    Because they're not out --
    they're out there violating others'
  • Not Synced
    freedom and privacy,
to the extent of criminal acts.
  • Not Synced
    Criminals are not guaranteed anonymity,
    under any law.
  • Not Synced
If they're going to be out there
    breaking laws,
  • Not Synced
and -- and -- committing crime,
  • Not Synced
    you're --- you're not entitled
to privacy and protection under the law,
  • Not Synced
of your face, and your I. D., and your --
    no, I --
  • Not Synced
I think you have an onus,
  • Not Synced
    as a mature, responsible user
    of these social interfaces,
  • Not Synced
    to be transparent.
  • Not Synced
You know, yeah -- I'm not out there
    committing criminal acts, and
  • Not Synced
I'm going to prove it, by
letting everybody know who I am.
  • Not Synced
    You know, by being transparent.
  • Not Synced
    That's just how I feel.
  • Not Synced
[Staci DaSilva] So when did you start
    getting harassed?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] So, I started getting harassed
  • Not Synced
    around the time of the
    royal wedding.
  • Not Synced
And, and -- the moment that
    people knew
  • Not Synced
that I disagreed with some things
    about my sister,
  • Not Synced
    such as, you know,
  • Not Synced
    not inviting both sides
    of the family,
  • Not Synced
    and, um...
  • Not Synced
    the possibility of my book
    coming out.
  • Not Synced
    That was another
    controversial subject.
  • Not Synced
    I started getting threats,
  • Not Synced
    and people would send
    and tweet
  • Not Synced
    photographs of me
    being viewed
  • Not Synced
    through a high-powered scope,
  • Not Synced
    behind broken glass,
  • Not Synced
    with my face in targets.
  • Not Synced
    You know, if that's not
    obvious symbolism,
  • Not Synced
    I don't know what is.
  • Not Synced
    But, it was all
    with the intent to
  • Not Synced
    intimidate,
    keep me in fear,
  • Not Synced
    uh, prevent me from
    releasing my book.
  • Not Synced
    And you can't do that
    to people.
  • Not Synced
    We have freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    And, just because
  • Not Synced
    someone might not like
    what I have to say,
  • Not Synced
    or that I have
    a book coming out,
  • Not Synced
    doesn't mean that they can
  • Not Synced
    engage in criminal activity,
  • Not Synced
    coersion, threats, intimidation,
  • Not Synced
    to prevent my exercising
    my freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Was this on
    facebook and twitter?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Mmm-hmm.
  • Not Synced
    And I don't have an
    Instagram account.
  • Not Synced
    I started one
    several years ago,
  • Not Synced
    and, like I just,
  • Not Synced
    I think I said "Hello?"
  • Not Synced
    I never used it,
  • Not Synced
    but it's got
    thousands of followers.
  • Not Synced
    And, it gets daunting.
  • Not Synced
    Like I can't, I can't
    go, and get to
  • Not Synced
    every platform, and say,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, shut this down,
    it's not me,"
  • Not Synced
    so, there are so many
    fake accounts out there,
  • Not Synced
    that are out there saying
    disparaging things,
  • Not Synced
    and parody accounts.
  • Not Synced
    Those are also attempts at
    this, you know,
  • Not Synced
    uh, defamation, libel, slander,
    bullying. Uh --
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] How often do you
    hear from these trolls?
  • Not Synced
I mean, on your social media
    accounts?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] Um, I shut it down,
so I don't see their mentions.
  • Not Synced
Because it got to the point
  • Not Synced
    where they were always
    mentioning me,
  • Not Synced
    trying to, you know,
  • Not Synced
    flag themselves,
    and get attention,
  • Not Synced
    and say horrible things,
    and Photoshop and
  • Not Synced
    create things to villainize
    or criminalize me.
  • Not Synced
    I just thought, you know,
    "That's not real."
  • Not Synced
    And, for people out there
  • Not Synced
    who are bullied in cyberspace,
  • Not Synced
    you know, I want -- I just --
  • Not Synced
    especially young people.
  • Not Synced
    I want to say,
  • Not Synced
    "You really can't
    give that legs."
  • Not Synced
    "You can't give it breath."
  • Not Synced
    "It's not real, unless
  • Not Synced
you allow it to consume you,
    and you make it real."
  • Not Synced
    Um, so...
  • Not Synced
    you know, teenagers, who
    go through this.
  • Not Synced
    They don't have the resouces
  • Not Synced
    to leave their high schools,
  • Not Synced
    or move out of their
    communities,
  • Not Synced
    and they are very trapped.
  • Not Synced
    And it's overwhelming for them.
  • Not Synced
    And, some of these trolls
  • Not Synced
    have such a large presence,
  • Not Synced
    creating bots, and multiple avatars,
  • Not Synced
    that these teenagers feel like
  • Not Synced
    they're being attacked
    by hundreds of people,
  • Not Synced
    when, really, they're not.
  • Not Synced
They're being attacked by a few,
  • Not Synced
    who make themselves out
    to be bigger.
  • Not Synced
    Well, that's what bullies do.
  • Not Synced
    They puff their chest.
  • Not Synced
    They want to feel big.
  • Not Synced
    They want to feel like
they've got a lot of power.
  • Not Synced
    And, for teenagers,
  • Not Synced
    it's often inescapable, and
  • Not Synced
    it results in suicidal ideation,
    and even suicide.
  • Not Synced
So, they need strong support systems.
  • Not Synced
    Their parents, their friends.
    They need counseling.
  • Not Synced
    But, more than that,
  • Not Synced
    they need to remember
    that these people
  • Not Synced
    are only real, and powerful,
    if you let them be.
  • Not Synced
    It's important to reach out,
    and communicate,
  • Not Synced
    and call them on what
    they are doing,
  • Not Synced
    before they become
    a real problem.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] You had to leave
    your home, correct?
  • Not Synced
    How many times
    have you had to move?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Twice.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Twice. And, from
    Florida, to Virginia?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] I moved from Florida
    to Virginia,
  • Not Synced
    and then, the same thing
    happened in Virginia.
  • Not Synced
    They were sharing my address,
  • Not Synced
    and asking me if
    it sounded familiar.
  • Not Synced
    Um, showing pictures of me,
    behind a scope.
  • Not Synced
But, it got worse than that.
  • Not Synced
    They were sharing, uh, images
    of me, being seen through
  • Not Synced
    our security cameras.
  • Not Synced
    Or, me, outside, with
    my boyfriend
  • Not Synced
    helping me
    get into my vehicle.
  • Not Synced
    That could've only been
    planted in trees, or
  • Not Synced
    seen through
    our own devices.
  • Not Synced
    Which let me know
    that I was very hacked,
  • Not Synced
    and I was being watched.
  • Not Synced
    Um, they shared pictures
  • Not Synced
of my boyfriend, looking at himself
  • Not Synced
    on his own cell phone.
  • Not Synced
    Which let me know
  • Not Synced
    that they had hacked
    our devices.
  • Not Synced
    And, their apps had
    camera access.
  • Not Synced
    And, they were mentioning
  • Not Synced
    conversations that we had
    in our living room,
  • Not Synced
    about money,
    or other things.
  • Not Synced
    And they would say,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, what about that
    thousand dollars?"
  • Not Synced
    So, they were
    acquiescing
  • Not Synced
    to not only stalking,
  • Not Synced
    but hacking.
  • Not Synced
    For someone like me...
  • Not Synced
    I'm a counselor,
  • Not Synced
    I'm pretty intelligent,
  • Not Synced
    you know, I think
    I can handle it, and
  • Not Synced
analyze it for what it is?
  • Not Synced
    But, for a teenager...
  • Not Synced
    who is, you know,
  • Not Synced
    going through identity crisis,
  • Not Synced
    and, you know,
  • Not Synced
    has a self-esteem
  • Not Synced
    that is not totally
    evolved, yet?
  • Not Synced
    It can be terrifying.
  • Not Synced
    When you know
    you are being watched,
  • Not Synced
    and everything that you do
  • Not Synced
    is being twisted,
  • Not Synced
    and used against you,
    to defame you,
  • Not Synced
    and to threaten.
  • Not Synced
    So -- yeah, cyber-bullying
    is horrible,
  • Not Synced
    and I think that
    the burden really needs
  • Not Synced
    to be on social media
    platforms.
  • Not Synced
    Twitter, facebook,
    Instagram. All of them.
  • Not Synced
    Um, especially the new ones,
    coming up.
  • Not Synced
    To have strict
    identification measures
  • Not Synced
    in place, for its users,
    to prevent this.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] So, you moved
    to Polk county
  • Not Synced
    about six months ago?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Did you
    want to say
  • Not Synced
    what town we are in,
    right now?
  • Not Synced
    Or would you want to
just keep it at Polk county?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    Why did you choose
    Polk county?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] It's gorgeous.
  • Not Synced
    I love the lakes,
    I love, you know --
  • Not Synced
    it's, uh -- it's
    a little more central.
  • Not Synced
    Where I was --
Well, I didn't like fire ants.
  • Not Synced
In Ocala, it seemed to be
    just one of those things
  • Not Synced
    that was indigenous
    to the area, so.
  • Not Synced
    Um, but I really...
  • Not Synced
    I wanted the happy medium.
  • Not Synced
    Being close to water,
  • Not Synced
    as I was in
    Southern California.
  • Not Synced
    And here, I have it,
    without the smog.
  • Not Synced
    But, I have family here,
  • Not Synced
and I love the people here.
  • Not Synced
    So, I'm staying.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    And, you moved about
    six months ago.
  • Not Synced
    And, this summer,
  • Not Synced
    you filed a complaint
    with the sheriff's office.
  • Not Synced
    Why did you do that?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Because,
  • Not Synced
    I was being
    stalked and harassed.
  • Not Synced
    Uh, my boyfriend
    got a ticket
  • Not Synced
    for a tail light
    on a trailer, being out.
  • Not Synced
    And, it was supposed
    to stay confidential.
  • Not Synced
    But, the address
    on that ticket
  • Not Synced
    was somehow released,
    because
  • Not Synced
trolls were able to comb through
  • Not Synced
    courthouse computer databases.
  • Not Synced
    The problem with that is,
    that, you know --
  • Not Synced
    yeah, some courthouse records
    are private,
  • Not Synced
but it wasn't in the news.
  • Not Synced
    And, I was having my
    identity and my location
  • Not Synced
    protected by a real estate
    company,
  • Not Synced
    under the circumstances.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Can we just
    take that time code down?
  • Not Synced
    Because she said the address,
  • Not Synced
    and we did want to
    put this interview online?
  • Not Synced
So, I don't think we want to
    put the address online.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Correct?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Sorry.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] If you could just --
  • Not Synced
    [Man] About 14:56.
    Right around there.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Okay.
  • Not Synced
Just so, when we go back,
we can take that out, for you.
  • Not Synced
    [Man] Be careful.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] I know, I know.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Um, sorry.
    14:56 something?
  • Not Synced
    [Man] Yeah,
    right around 14:56, yeah.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Okay.
    [S. DaSilva] Okay, sorry.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] So, so.
  • Not Synced
    They were saying:
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, does this number
    or this street match?"
  • Not Synced
    "Does this sound familiar?"
  • Not Synced
    And, I, you know --
  • Not Synced
    in other words, they
    were taunting me,
  • Not Synced
    with my address,
    and my location,
  • Not Synced
    letting me know
  • Not Synced
    that they were out there,
    sharing it.
  • Not Synced
    They were also sharing, um,
    screenshot admissions
  • Not Synced
    of having my
    Social Security number.
  • Not Synced
    Then, they said, they said,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, but we guessed
    your Social Security number."
  • Not Synced
Well, out of all the billions
    of possible combinations?
  • Not Synced
    That couldn't be possible.
  • Not Synced
    So -- you know,
    they were telling on themselves.
  • Not Synced
    And the bottom line, here,
    is that
  • Not Synced
    there is very private information
that they were actively, all day,
  • Not Synced
    obsessed about and combing,
to get every little detail about me.
  • Not Synced
    That acquiesces to stalking.
  • Not Synced
    Because uh, uh, you know,
    someone who you don't know
  • Not Synced
    doesn't have a right
    to be looking,
  • Not Synced
    to see if there is
    anything about you in court,
  • Not Synced
    to see what's going on
    with your medical records.
  • Not Synced
    To share your address.
  • Not Synced
    To be direct messaging people
    and asking questions about you.
  • Not Synced
    Unless they are a reporter,
or they have some valid reason,
  • Not Synced
    for...getting every piece of information
    they can, about you,
  • Not Synced
    and taunting you with it.
  • Not Synced
    Like: "Hey, what about this?
    And what about that?"
  • Not Synced
    Well, who are you,
  • Not Synced
to ask me "What about this
    and what about that?"
  • Not Synced
And, to try and spin it,
  • Not Synced
    to villainize or criminalize me?
  • Not Synced
So, for -- I can see how,
    for teenagers,
  • Not Synced
    that's overwhelming.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Mm-hm. Yeah.
    You talked about the teenagers.
  • Not Synced
    But, has the sheriff's office
    been open to your complaint,
  • Not Synced
    and taking it seriously?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] Yeah, since we started
    this whole thing.
  • Not Synced
    You know, I showed them
    everything,
  • Not Synced
    and let them know
    what was going on.
  • Not Synced
    And, you know, I --
    I'm really lucky,
  • Not Synced
    to live in a state
    that takes that seriously.
  • Not Synced
    You know, the cyber-stalking
    and "stand your ground" laws.
  • Not Synced
    I feel really safe.
  • Not Synced
    And it's nice to know
  • Not Synced
    that law enforcement
    is proactive about that.
  • Not Synced
    You know, you can't
    do that to a person.
  • Not Synced
    You can't taunt them,
    put them in fear,
  • Not Synced
    um, intimidate them --
  • Not Synced
    harass them --
  • Not Synced
    and encourage others,
    on a wide scale,
  • Not Synced
    to engage in
    targeted harassment.
  • Not Synced
    It's -- nobody, nobody
    deserves to live like that.
  • Not Synced
    And, certainly not
    for expressing freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    Because, you're a journalist.
  • Not Synced
If you did a report, and somebody
didn't like something you had to say,
  • Not Synced
    You know...it's really psychotic,
    that anybody would
  • Not Synced
    go to that extreme,
to suppress what you have to say,
  • Not Synced
and to make every corner of your life
    public information,
  • Not Synced
twisting it in a negative way.
  • Not Synced
To put you in fear, or shame.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] And, your reaction to
the news spreading across the world
  • Not Synced
    that you were the target
    of the investigation for
  • Not Synced
    things you have said
    about your sister,
  • Not Synced
    vs. what actually is happening.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Well -- and I think
    that's really important too,
  • Not Synced
    because there is a problem
    with aggregate news.
  • Not Synced
    I understand that journalists
    and bloggers get so busy,
  • Not Synced
and a lot of them, you know --
  • Not Synced
there is often, on one side
    of, you know, the coin,
  • Not Synced
    there is paid P. R.
    that spins things.
  • Not Synced
    But there is also
    aggregate news error, that happens.
  • Not Synced
    When they see fragments
    of information,
  • Not Synced
    they don't have a lot
of time to pop the stories out,
  • Not Synced
and they just copy them verbatim.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe, with extra words,
and spin it a little bit more.
  • Not Synced
    And suddenly,
    the victim becomes the suspect.
  • Not Synced
    Because someone didn't understand
  • Not Synced
    what "being at the center
    of investigation" means.
  • Not Synced
    Well, it doesn't mean
    I'm the suspect.
  • Not Synced
    And, they didn't ask.
    They didn't bother to ask.
  • Not Synced
    They just assumed,
    and put it in print,
  • Not Synced
    that I was the suspect,
    not the victim.
  • Not Synced
    Shouldn't happen.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] So there, as you --
Are you afraid for your life?
  • Not Synced
    Here in Polk county?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] Well, yeah, I have been.
  • Not Synced
    And, and, you know,
    if you can imagfine
  • Not Synced
    seeing your face
    on a bulls-eye
  • Not Synced
    behind broken glass,
    or on a dartboard.
  • Not Synced
    And, pictures of someone
    like Matt Damon,
  • Not Synced
    looking through a
    high-powered scope,
  • Not Synced
    a clip from a film,
    or a GIF.
  • Not Synced
    And, "You can run
    but you can't hide, Samantha."
  • Not Synced
    Those things are symbolic,
and they are put out there
  • Not Synced
    with the intent
    of putting you in fear.
  • Not Synced
    Intimidating you,
  • Not Synced
    preventing you from
    publishing a book,
  • Not Synced
    um -- which happened, too.
    You know...
  • Not Synced
    "We're gonna,
if you put your book out,
  • Not Synced
    we're gonna download it,
    and share it for free,
  • Not Synced
    so nobody buys it."
  • Not Synced
    Those are -- those are
    intimidation, uh, tactics,
  • Not Synced
    that are against the law.
  • Not Synced
    On many levels.
  • Not Synced
    And so, yeah,
    it was scary for me.
  • Not Synced
    I am in a wheelchair.
  • Not Synced
I don't need to feel like,
  • Not Synced
I am a slow moving target,
going out of my own home.
  • Not Synced
    Nobody has a right
to do that to me, and
  • Not Synced
    they are subject
    to legal sanction.
  • Not Synced
    It's just -- that's not how
    a legal, you know,
  • Not Synced
    high functioning society
    operates.
  • Not Synced
    And, those criminals need
    to be made examples of.
  • Not Synced
    They need to experience
    specific deterrents, under the law.
  • Not Synced
    And, they need to be
made out to be, you know,
  • Not Synced
    examples of general deterrents.
  • Not Synced
    So other would-be
    cyber-bullies know,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, don't do the crime,
if you can't do the time,"
  • Not Synced
    and most local
    law enforcement,
  • Not Synced
    local and federal
    law enforcement agencies,
  • Not Synced
    will come get ya.
  • Not Synced
    You know, VPN or not,
  • Not Synced
    there are ways to
    find these offenders.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] What do you say
    to critics who say,
  • Not Synced
    "You spoke out. You know,
you were vocal, you wrote a book."
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Well --
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] "You tweeted..."
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] But, writing a book
    and speaking out...
  • Not Synced
    you know, my father
    had two heart attacks.
  • Not Synced
    I didn't agree with
my sister's treatment of the family.
  • Not Synced
    That does not give
    some of these unhinged people
  • Not Synced
    license, or the right
  • Not Synced
    to engage in criminal activity
    against me.
  • Not Synced
    Stalk, harass, incite violence
    against me.
  • Not Synced
    It's like, any of us
    who have fought
  • Not Synced
    for freedom of speech,
  • Not Synced
    whether the issue
    is gender, race, political issues,
  • Not Synced
    just because you say something
  • Not Synced
    doesn't give people who disagree
    with you,
  • Not Synced
the right to put you in fear
    and suppress your opinion,
  • Not Synced
    by threatening you
    when you do.
  • Not Synced
    And that, you know --
  • Not Synced
    I think that's what
we really need to make a precedent.
  • Not Synced
    We're not tolerating this
    any more.
  • Not Synced
We all have to 'agree to disagree'
    under the law,
  • Not Synced
    because if you take it
    beyond those legal boundaries,
  • Not Synced
    and you engage in
    criminal activity, intent,
  • Not Synced
    you know, um --
    intimidation, and harassment,
  • Not Synced
    um, with the intent
    to put someone in fear,
  • Not Synced
    if they speak?
  • Not Synced
    It's against the law.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] Do you have any regrets
  • Not Synced
    for anything that has happened,
    since, you said,
  • Not Synced
    around the royal wedding?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Um...
  • Not Synced
    the only regret...
  • Not Synced
    no, I don't have regrets.
  • Not Synced
    Because I was being honest.
  • Not Synced
    And I've always said,
  • Not Synced
    "You shouldn't regret
    telling the truth."
  • Not Synced
And, when you tell the truth,
    you know --
  • Not Synced
    yeah, I don't think
the whistle blower is the problem.
  • Not Synced
    But, if you do it
    from a heartfelt place,
  • Not Synced
    and it's about family,
  • Not Synced
    and it's about
    something you care about,
  • Not Synced
    when you tell the truth,
  • Not Synced
    the person on the
    receiving end,
  • Not Synced
    or who you are
    telling the truth about,
  • Not Synced
    has the opportunity,
  • Not Synced
    but, I believe also,
    responsibility,
  • Not Synced
    to say,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey. Let me hear what
    you have to say,
  • Not Synced
    Let's communicate.
  • Not Synced
    Let's have a meeting
    of the minds,
  • Not Synced
    and make things better.
  • Not Synced
    Let's do what's right, here."
  • Not Synced
    And, the only way
    the right thing can happen
  • Not Synced
    is if people can
    talk about it.
  • Not Synced
    Silence, as
    the status quo,
  • Not Synced
    accomplishes nothing.
  • Not Synced
    So, you know,
  • Not Synced
    where people were afraid
    to speak,
  • Not Synced
    because of this high prestige
    issue, um...
  • Not Synced
    it's wrong.
  • Not Synced
    Because there's a real
    family issue there.
  • Not Synced
    The public got involved.
  • Not Synced
    They took it too far,
    without saying,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey, they are family.
  • Not Synced
    They can speak out
    if they want to.
  • Not Synced
    It's not really
    our business."
  • Not Synced
    But, they had their
    own agendas.
  • Not Synced
    So, you can't suppress
    freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    Or, none of us
    would be here,
  • Not Synced
    and you wouldn't have
    a journalism job.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Obviously, I think
  • Not Synced
    there are similarities, here.
  • Not Synced
    Between what you are saying,
  • Not Synced
    and between what
    your sister is saying,
  • Not Synced
    and her husband.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Right.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] About how
    they've been treated,
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Exactly.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] In the media, with
  • Not Synced
    false reports, online harassment,
    and trolling.
  • Not Synced
    How do you feel --
  • Not Synced
    do you have compassion
    for them, in that way?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] I do, and I've also
    learned, through this,
  • Not Synced
that you know, in terms of
    aggregate news,
  • Not Synced
    at one point,
    they were seeing stories,
  • Not Synced
    probably reacting to
    what they thought we said,
  • Not Synced
    or what they thought
    we were doing.
  • Not Synced
    We were --
    it was very reciprocal.
  • Not Synced
    We were reacting.
  • Not Synced
    But, the bottom line is,
  • Not Synced
    there is so much
    propaganda out there,
  • Not Synced
that none of us really knew
    where the truth was.
  • Not Synced
    And similarly,
    with the bullying.
  • Not Synced
    You know, the people
    that disagree with her
  • Not Synced
    have bullied her,
    to threatening extremes.
  • Not Synced
    They bullied Kate and William.
  • Not Synced
    They've bullied me.
  • Not Synced
    But they have --
    the difference is,
  • Not Synced
    they have the money
    and the social, um,
  • Not Synced
    or the financial resources,
    to protect themselves against that.
  • Not Synced
    A normal person,
  • Not Synced
    like me and my dad,
    you know, our family --
  • Not Synced
    we don't.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Mm-hm.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] We just got
caught in the middle of it.
  • Not Synced
    But, nonetheless,
    we had the right
  • Not Synced
    to speak our feelings.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] There are people,
    I'm sure,
  • Not Synced
I will get tweets, facebook posts,
    whatever, saying'
  • Not Synced
    you even doing this interview
  • Not Synced
is you still trying to get publicity
    off your sister.
  • Not Synced
    Why are you
    speaking out today?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] I am speaking out today
    because
  • Not Synced
there has been this really, uh,
    interesting phenomena, of
  • Not Synced
    ...people have always
    demanded their freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    They speak out against
    the President.
  • Not Synced
    They speak out against,
    you know,
  • Not Synced
    whatever the issue is.
  • Not Synced
    Or, the celebrity.
  • Not Synced
    And, nobody says,
    "You just want attention."
  • Not Synced
    They're just out there,
  • Not Synced
    exercising their
    freedom of speech.
  • Not Synced
    But because of this
    royal situation,
  • Not Synced
    suddenly, it's all about,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, you must
    want attention."
  • Not Synced
    Well, I worked in
    broadcasting
  • Not Synced
    for a long time.
  • Not Synced
    I am fifty-four.
  • Not Synced
    I don't need attention.
  • Not Synced
It, it, it was a family issue,
  • Not Synced
    it was heartfelt.
  • Not Synced
    I was concerned with
  • Not Synced
    my father dying,
    without closure.
  • Not Synced
    And, and,
    in our communities,
  • Not Synced
    because there was no
    invitation to the wedding,
  • Not Synced
    it became public.
  • Not Synced
    And the assumption was,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, you must not
    be worthy,
  • Not Synced
    since you weren't invited."
  • Not Synced
    So, it's not like
It was a wedding in Ohio.
  • Not Synced
    And, we wanted attention:
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, why didn't
    we get invited."
  • Not Synced
    It's because
all of our peers in the world
  • Not Synced
    were suddenly, you know,
  • Not Synced
    putting us under
    a microscope,
  • Not Synced
    "Why didn't you get invited?"
  • Not Synced
And it was some sort of
    character indictment.
  • Not Synced
    The implication that,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, you must not
    be worthy."
  • Not Synced
    And then,
    aggregate news
  • Not Synced
    started spinning assumptions;
  • Not Synced
    about the book,
    about family members.
  • Not Synced
And it got out of control.
  • Not Synced
So, um. Do I want attention?
  • Not Synced
    No.
  • Not Synced
    What I really wanted
    out of all of this,
  • Not Synced
    was my sister to realize,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey. I got caught up
    in a whirlwind.
  • Not Synced
What I did to my dad
    was wrong.
  • Not Synced
    We're all bigger people.
  • Not Synced
    Let's evolve,
    and do the right thing."
  • Not Synced
    And it takes
    just as much time
  • Not Synced
    to do the right thing,
  • Not Synced
as it does to ignore it.
  • Not Synced
    And, um,
  • Not Synced
    I'd like to see him
be able to communicate with her,
  • Not Synced
    before he passes away.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] That was going to be
    my next question.
  • Not Synced
    What do you hope
    for your relationship with Meghan,
  • Not Synced
    and your father's
    relationship with her?
  • Not Synced
    For her to reach out?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] At some point,
    when she is ready.
  • Not Synced
    But, you know, with me.
  • Not Synced
    But, with my father,
  • Not Synced
    'at some point'
    may be too late.
  • Not Synced
    So, you know --
  • Not Synced
    our repeated efforts
    to extend an olive branch...
  • Not Synced
    I would assume, you know
  • Not Synced
    when interacting with a, quote,
    "humanitarian,"
  • Not Synced
    would be met with
    a very humble, um,
  • Not Synced
    acceptance, and yeah,
  • Not Synced
    "Let's look at this.
    Let's make this better."
  • Not Synced
    And, that's all
    I was trying to say.
  • Not Synced
    And, if that's bashing,
    wow.
  • Not Synced
    Then, so, sue me.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] There were
    some bashing tweets.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] But that's, you know --
  • Not Synced
    'Bashing?' Well...
  • Not Synced
I think a lot of the media
    labeled it as bashing,
  • Not Synced
    like, if I did
    the thing I said about
  • Not Synced
    Harry at the birthday,
  • Not Synced
    "While you're mac-ing down
    on the birthday cake,
  • Not Synced
    don't forget to wish Dad
    a Happy Birthday."
  • Not Synced
    Is that bashing,
    or is it witty?
  • Not Synced
    The problem --
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] I think
    you called him a wuss.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Yeah. Take your
    'nads back. Be a man.
  • Not Synced
    Because,
  • Not Synced
    the whole family
    was being ghosted,
  • Not Synced
    and I felt like,
  • Not Synced
    "Hey. You know,
  • Not Synced
    you're a man, too.
    You're letting my father suffer."
  • Not Synced
And, there was no real invitation.
  • Not Synced
    Uh...so, I felt like,
  • Not Synced
    somebody has to step up,
    and do the right thing,
  • Not Synced
    and say something.
  • Not Synced
    I worked in broadcasting.
  • Not Synced
    I'm a counselor.
  • Not Synced
    I believe in communication.
  • Not Synced
    And, nobody was saying anything.
  • Not Synced
And the problem with tweets, though,
  • Not Synced
    is that you can't hear
    tone of voice.
  • Not Synced
    So, while I thought
    I was saying something
  • Not Synced
    maybe cynical, maybe witty,
  • Not Synced
    people couldn't hear it.
  • Not Synced
    They were interpreting it
    through their own life lenses.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe they were angry.
  • Not Synced
    Maybe they've got a
    negative lens
  • Not Synced
    over everything
    in their lives.
  • Not Synced
    And, then,
    they were reacting to it
  • Not Synced
    from their own
    personal perspectives.
  • Not Synced
    Which does not
    always coincide with
  • Not Synced
    the sender intent.
  • Not Synced
    So, I think that's
    something really important
  • Not Synced
    about social media, too.
  • Not Synced
    And because
there can be those crossed wires,
  • Not Synced
    and they can be
    emotionally heated,
  • Not Synced
    twitter and facebook
    and Instagram
  • Not Synced
    have more of
    an obligation
  • Not Synced
    to...not moderate that,
  • Not Synced
    but, to keep it safe,
  • Not Synced
    when people's intrepretations
carry it to such heated levels,
  • Not Synced
    that it crosses over
    into criminal activity.
  • Not Synced
That, you know, people are --
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] People say things
    on social media
  • Not Synced
    they would never say
    to someone's face.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Right! Because
the avatar, you know, is a shield.
  • Not Synced
    It's a false source
    of empowerment.
  • Not Synced
You know, in the animal kingdom,
  • Not Synced
    they puff their chest,
to look bigger than they are.
  • Not Synced
    Well, they can do that
    on social media.
  • Not Synced
    Behind an avatar.
  • Not Synced
    "Ooh, big words,
    on an avatar."
  • Not Synced
"I've got a flower out there,
    or a kitty cat.
  • Not Synced
    But I'm going to say
    big, disgusting, terrifying things,"
  • Not Synced
    and, you know...
  • Not Synced
    It's...not good.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] How is
    your dad doing?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] He's doing okay.
  • Not Synced
    He's doing better. He's, um...
  • Not Synced
    feeling, you know...
  • Not Synced
    I think, more empowered.
  • Not Synced
    This has been...
  • Not Synced
    a growth opportunity
    for all of us.
  • Not Synced
    But, I think
    more than anything,
  • Not Synced
    it's really interesting
    that the royals,
  • Not Synced
    Meg and Harry,
  • Not Synced
    and, you know,
    this side of the fence,
  • Not Synced
    the Markles,
  • Not Synced
    we are all
kind of saying the same thing.
  • Not Synced
It is that you can have,
  • Not Synced
    especially with the family,
  • Not Synced
if there is an issue out there,
    or a social issue,
  • Not Synced
    you can disagree,
  • Not Synced
    but you don't take it
    to the level of incredible,
  • Not Synced
    terrorizing, taunting,
    intimidation,
  • Not Synced
    threats.
  • Not Synced
    That's where we cap it.
  • Not Synced
[S. DaSilva] Your father doesn't live
in Polk county as well, does he?
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Hmm-mm.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Okay.
  • Not Synced
    Um...I read some articles...
  • Not Synced
    I think you had said
    that you
  • Not Synced
    raised Meghan
    until she was twelve,
  • Not Synced
    pretty much? Or?
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] See, here is where
  • Not Synced
    I am gonna talk --
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] I'm gonna
    fact-check that.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Here's where
    I am gonna
  • Not Synced
    talk about aggregate news, see.
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Yeah.
  • Not Synced
    [S. Markle] Even a journalist
    like you,
  • Not Synced
    and a lot of
    other journalists,
  • Not Synced
    and talk show hostesses,
    believe that.
  • Not Synced
And I was sitting here, going,
  • Not Synced
"Wow. Where did you hear that?"
  • Not Synced
    [S. DaSilva] Mm-hmm.
  • Not Synced
[S. Markle] Because I had said
    in one interview,
  • Not Synced
"I was integral in her life,
    until about twelve."
  • Not Synced
    I always lived about
    ten minutes away,
  • Not Synced
    she was born
    in our household,
  • Not Synced
    my dad and Doria divorced
    when she was about six.
  • Not Synced
Still, it was during the week,
    weekends, intermingling,
