City of Sydney's plans for decentralised water

  • 0:00 - 0:04
We're creating a style of more sustainable Sydney.
    (smarter - more sustainable Sydney)
  • 0:04 - 0:07
Water is one of our most valuable resources.
(less than 2% of drinking water is used for drinking)
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    But we use drinking-quality water
  • 0:09 - 0:11
for things that don't really need it
(20% of our drinking water is used to flush toilets)
  • 0:11 - 0:14
while stormwater and water from our showers
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    washing machines and basins
  • 0:16 - 0:19
    goes down the drain, wasted.
(we have around 26 bilion litres of stormwater run off every year)
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    That's why we're planning
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    a decentralised water system
    (decentralised water)
  • 0:23 - 0:26
This includes a local, recycled water system
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    alongside our current water network.
  • 0:28 - 0:31
This local water will be treated and then distributed
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    using a separate purple pipe.
    (separate purple pipe)
  • 0:33 - 0:36
It'll be used for non-drinking purposes only
  • 0:36 - 0:38
like water in gardens and parks
  • 0:38 - 0:39
    and flushing mews (?)
  • 0:40 - 0:42
By using treated and filtered recycled water
  • 0:42 - 0:45
we could help supply the city of Sydney's
  • 0:45 - 0:46
    non-drinking water needs
(Over 50% of our non-drinking water)
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    leaving our drinking water
  • 0:48 - 0:49
    for drinking.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    In 2010, Austin, Texas
    (Texas)
  • 0:52 - 0:54
saved more than seven billion litres of water
    (seven billion litres of water)
  • 0:54 - 0:56
through the use of reclaimed water.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
And Singapore has one of the largest
    (Singapore)
  • 0:59 - 1:01
water recycling plants in the world.
(one of the largest water recycling plants in the world)
  • 1:01 - 1:03
where it is actually a tourist attraction.
  • 1:04 - 1:08
Recycling water will help us preserve our precious drinking water
  • 1:08 - 1:10
and by introducing innovations like rain gardens,
  • 1:10 - 1:12
in our parks and streets (?)
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    we'll also reduce the pollution
(rain gardens slow down and filter water)
  • 1:14 - 1:15
going into our water base (?),
  • 1:15 - 1:18
adding to the water saving actions
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    we're already doing,
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    creating a sustainable Sydney 2030
(City of Sydney 2030 - Clover More)
  • 1:24 - 1:27
a green, global and connected city
    (Clover More, Mayor of Sydney).
