The value of effort | Toni Nadal | TEDxMalagueta
-
0:12 - 0:15For many years, I've been
Rafael Nadal's coach -
0:16 - 0:21and I've met two important requirements
to be a good coach. -
0:21 - 0:25The first one is that I'm his uncle,
-
0:26 - 0:30is always harder to fire a relative
than somebody else, -
0:31 - 0:35and the second is that
as we are half Catalans -
0:35 - 0:38I've been the cheapest coach
in the circuit -
0:38 - 0:40and that counts too.
-
0:40 - 0:41For that ...
-
0:41 - 0:45(Applause)
-
0:46 - 0:50For that I've stayed in that position
many years, -
0:50 - 0:51not for other reasons.
-
0:52 - 0:55Once, in Monte Carlo,
we had to play the final -
0:55 - 0:58against a not very good Swiss player,
-
0:58 - 1:00he played for a while.
-
1:01 - 1:04So, we had to play against him
-
1:05 - 1:07and Rafael asked me,
-
1:07 - 1:09"How do you see the match today?"
-
1:09 - 1:13And I told him, "How do I see it?
I see it a bit tough." -
1:13 - 1:17"Federer has a better drive than yours,
-
1:17 - 1:20his backhand is better
-
1:20 - 1:23volley is better too" ...
-
1:23 - 1:28And when I was about to tell him,
"And the serve, there's no comparison," -
1:28 - 1:30He told me, "Whew! Stop, Stop."
-
1:30 - 1:33"You really support me
before going to the pitch." -
1:33 - 1:36And I told him, "I could lie to you
-
1:36 - 1:39but in a while Federer
isn't going to do so. -
1:39 - 1:43It's better for you to know
what you are going to deal with, -
1:43 - 1:46from now on we are going
to look for answers." -
1:46 - 1:48That has been the way I've understood,
-
1:48 - 1:52a kind of way that I've understood
training. -
1:52 - 1:56Accepting reality is one complicated
thing to do nowadays. -
1:57 - 2:00It seems today that we always have to give
-
2:00 - 2:05messages to our relatives, positive ones.
-
2:06 - 2:09We have to say to them constantly
-
2:09 - 2:13that they are almost the best ones,
that they are really good. -
2:13 - 2:18I think that this is not a good principle,
I prefer the other one. -
2:18 - 2:20Knowing that I'm not good enough.
-
2:21 - 2:23I think that when you know
-
2:23 - 2:27that you are not good enough
and you know reality, -
2:27 - 2:32that's the first step, the starting point,
to reach your goals. -
2:33 - 2:35That's how I've always understood it.
-
2:36 - 2:39I've always avoided an overvaluation
-
2:39 - 2:43of the boys I was training,
mostly of Rafael. -
2:44 - 2:48He was, obviously my nephew
and I could do it. -
2:48 - 2:53I remember I add after telling him that,
I told him, -
2:53 - 2:58OK, well, if you are capable of playing
every point as if it were the last one, -
2:58 - 3:04if you are capable of playing this match
as if life depended on it, -
3:04 - 3:07if you are more excited than him
-
3:07 - 3:10and you are ready to run faster than him,
-
3:10 - 3:13I think you'll have
lots of chances of victory. -
3:13 - 3:16I've always believed in chances of victory
-
3:16 - 3:20although, the truth is,
it hasn't gone out very well. -
3:21 - 3:23That girl I told her that
she didn't know how to play, -
3:23 - 3:27ended fourth of Spain in her category,
-
3:27 - 3:29which wasn't that bad.
-
3:29 - 3:35This search of impartiality,
of avoiding a hoax, -
3:35 - 3:40as I was saying, it hasn't stopped me
from having the maximum confidence -
3:40 - 3:43in knowing that we'll reach our goals.
-
3:44 - 3:45Always.
-
3:45 - 3:50I've always had the maximum trust
that Rafael would achieve his goals -
3:50 - 3:53with work, obviously.
-
3:53 - 3:57I remember, many years ago,
at Carlos Moyá´s place, -
3:58 - 4:00Carlos Moyá asked me --
-
4:01 - 4:03Rafael was about 15 years old,
he asked me, -
4:04 - 4:11"Would you sign for Rafael to become
an Albert Costa in the future?" -
4:11 - 4:14Albert Costa had just won Roland Garros,
-
4:14 - 4:17he was the seventh at the ATP.
-
4:17 - 4:20And I told him,
"No, I don't sign for that." -
4:20 - 4:25"I don't think that Rafael will be better,
I want to believe that he'll be better." -
4:25 - 4:28Carlos Moyá was surprised by that statement
-
4:29 - 4:32Because Rafael was just a young promise
-
4:32 - 4:37and aiming to also be a
Roland Garros champion, wasn't that easy. -
4:37 - 4:39Immediately afterwards he asked me,
-
4:39 - 4:45"Would you sign for Rafael to become
a Carlos Moyá in the future?" -
4:46 - 4:47I answered... "Of course!"
-
4:47 - 4:51Carlos Moyá also won a Roland Garros,
-
4:51 - 4:56he was world number one,
five years among the eight bests. -
4:57 - 4:58I told him,
-
4:59 - 5:03"Yes, I sign for him to be a Carlos Moyá."
-
5:05 - 5:08We had dinner, he invited us.
-
5:08 - 5:11We said goodbye,
but just as the door closed, -
5:12 - 5:18when Rafael and I left, I told him,
"Well, there's no way I would sign it." -
5:18 - 5:20(Laughter)
-
5:20 - 5:22In his house, obviously,
I couldn't let him down. -
5:22 - 5:26There's no way
but to shape well the character. -
5:26 - 5:30I have been a coach who took care
-
5:30 - 5:34more of shaping Rafael's character,
-
5:34 - 5:36strengthening his character,
-
5:36 - 5:39than to form him well technically.
-
5:39 - 5:42That's the reason behind
those strange hits that he makes -
5:42 - 5:46over the head,
-
5:46 - 5:51or serving as he does now,
although I think he serves better, -
5:51 - 5:56but for many years,
I didn't manage to make him learn. -
5:56 - 5:57But the truth is,
-
5:57 - 6:01it never was my fault that
he didn't learn how to serve. -
6:01 - 6:02It was always his fault ...
-
6:02 - 6:03(Laughter)
-
6:03 - 6:09because, as many years ago I told
to the father of a pupil I trained, -
6:10 - 6:14who, seeing how disastrous
his son was, asked me, -
6:14 - 6:17"Is this what you teach to my son?"
-
6:17 - 6:19and I answered,
"No, this is what he learns, -
6:19 - 6:21what I teach is very different."
-
6:21 - 6:22(Laughter)
-
6:22 - 6:28(Applause)
-
6:32 - 6:35I've never liked to assume
the responsibility, -
6:35 - 6:38that's why, since he was a child
-
6:38 - 6:41I made Rafael assume his responsibility.
-
6:41 - 6:44I have the fame to be a strict coach,
-
6:44 - 6:49I have actually been strict,
I have been a tough coach. -
6:49 - 6:54I don't believe in roughness as an aim,
I believe in roughness as means. -
6:54 - 6:59I have been a demanding coach
because I cared a lot -
6:59 - 7:02a great fondness for my nephew.
-
7:02 - 7:08I wouldn't have ever been tough to
somebody who couldn't cope with it -
7:08 - 7:10or who couldn't cope with
that thoroughness. -
7:10 - 7:13But I would never be tough with somebody
-
7:14 - 7:19who I didn't feel a great fondness for,
for somebody I didn't appreciate truly. -
7:19 - 7:23Since I wanted the greater good
for my nephew, -
7:23 - 7:24I was really strict.
-
7:24 - 7:26I think this
-
7:28 - 7:29is a main condition.
-
7:29 - 7:31And to be strict,
-
7:31 - 7:33well, this thoroughness I always tried
-
7:33 - 7:37that it turned into self-demanding.
-
7:37 - 7:40One can't always be stretching constantly
-
7:42 - 7:44to his player, in this case,
-
7:44 - 7:48or to anybody who you train
in any activity. -
7:48 - 7:51That's why I always tried
that Rafael felt -
7:51 - 7:54the responsibility himself.
-
7:54 - 7:56I think that he assumed it, since:
-
7:56 - 8:01Many years ago I went with him
to a tournament -
8:01 - 8:02with another player.
-
8:03 - 8:05I accompanied him and ...
-
8:06 - 8:08I remember that they scheduled the match
-
8:08 - 8:11at the same hour than the other player
I was also accompanying. -
8:12 - 8:15I was seeing my nephew playing from afar,
-
8:15 - 8:17and he was being a complete disaster.
-
8:18 - 8:20He was losing 5-0 against
a not so great player. -
8:24 - 8:29In that moment, a friend of mine arrived,
he was a former player, and he told me, -
8:29 - 8:33"Hey! I think your nephew
is playing with a broken racket." -
8:33 - 8:35The ones that have played tennis,
-
8:36 - 8:38with a broken frame
is almost impossible to play, -
8:38 - 8:40the balls always go out,
-
8:40 - 8:43except inside the court, they all go out.
-
8:43 - 8:45I went to Rafael's court and I told him,
-
8:45 - 8:49"Listen, your racket is broken,
I think your racket is broken." -
8:49 - 8:53The guy did like this, "Damn! Yes,
it is broken, I'll change it." -
8:53 - 8:59Well, he changed it, the scene changed,
but at the end he lost 6-0, 7-5. -
8:59 - 9:03So, when the match was over,
I went to him and asked him, -
9:05 - 9:08"Can you tell me that a boy" --
he was 15 years old, I think -- -
9:09 - 9:13"Can you tell me that a boy
after playing for so many years, -
9:13 - 9:16doesn't know when a racket is broken?"
-
9:16 - 9:19And his answer was very clear, he told me,
-
9:19 - 9:23"Look, I'm so used to always be blamed,
-
9:23 - 9:28that I didn't even think that the racket
was the one that was making me lose." -
9:28 - 9:29(Laughter)
-
9:29 - 9:33(Applause)
-
9:39 - 9:42The speech has always been the same.
-
9:42 - 9:43A few times ...
-
9:43 - 9:47I think that a sense of self-criticism
is necessary, -
9:47 - 9:52it's very hard to progress, to improve,
without a good sense of self-criticism. -
9:52 - 9:55I've always tried for him to have it.
-
9:55 - 10:00I have always made sure that
he never gave me excuses, -
10:00 - 10:03neither about his defeats,
nor about anything that happened. -
10:03 - 10:06It is too easy to justify,
-
10:06 - 10:09to justify oneself constantly.
-
10:10 - 10:13In the academy I was asked to
-
10:13 - 10:16put up some phrases to motivate the guys.
-
10:16 - 10:19I don't know if I motivated them,
or if I discouraged them. -
10:20 - 10:23But I remember that one of the
phrases that I put up was, -
10:23 - 10:26"Never an excuse made us win a match."
-
10:26 - 10:27And that's the truth.
-
10:27 - 10:31Some years ago we were at the US Open
-
10:31 - 10:36and in that edition, the balls
didn't give a spin that Rafael wanted. -
10:36 - 10:38We were playing and it was a disaster.
-
10:39 - 10:40Everyday when we were going to train,
-
10:40 - 10:43"These balls aren't right for me,
they don't give the spin." -
10:43 - 10:47"Interesting," I told him.
-
10:47 - 10:52The next day was the same;
excuses bother me a lot. -
10:52 - 10:55He won his first match,
the second, the third; -
10:55 - 10:57but tired of hearing him, I told him,
-
10:57 - 11:01"Listen, what you should do, is to lose,
-
11:01 - 11:05lose and, in Majorca,
the ball will give a spin." -
11:05 - 11:06He listened to me: he lost.
-
11:06 - 11:07(Laughter)
-
11:07 - 11:12He lost, but he didn't go to Majorca,
he went to Beijing, -
11:12 - 11:17and I went to Majorca and later
we met again in Naples. -
11:18 - 11:21Curiously, in Beijing he won
the next tournament. -
11:21 - 11:23He beat everybody,
-
11:23 - 11:25he defeated the world number three,
the number five. -
11:25 - 11:28He made a great tournament,
I saw in on TV. -
11:28 - 11:32I knew the balls he was playing with
and were the same than the US Open ones. -
11:32 - 11:35I said "f***!" when I met him
again, I asked him, -
11:35 - 11:38"By the way, what ball
did you play with in Beijing?" -
11:38 - 11:41And he, a bit embarrassed answered:
"No, with Wilsons." -
11:42 - 11:43So ... in Beijing they give a spin,
-
11:43 - 11:47in New York they don't,
but in Beijing they do. -
11:48 - 11:49Whatever, it's always the same.
-
11:49 - 11:55Now he was in Australia and when
he played his fourth match, -
11:55 - 11:58and he didn't play too well
I said to him, "Yuck!" -
11:58 - 12:02He called me after the match and I told
him, "You haven't played too well." -
12:02 - 12:06And the first thing he told me was:
"It's because it was too hot." -
12:06 - 12:09It seems that it was hot only in one half
of the court, not in the other. -
12:09 - 12:11The other player did play really well.
-
12:11 - 12:13(Laughter)
-
12:13 - 12:16(Applause)
-
12:20 - 12:26As I said, I tried to strengthen up
Rafael's character, and I did -
12:27 - 12:30trying to encourage his ability to endure
-
12:30 - 12:32because I think this is
what is decisive in life. -
12:32 - 12:34The ability to endure.
-
12:34 - 12:38Years ago I was in a school,
-
12:38 - 12:41and I heard a teacher that told us,
-
12:41 - 12:44"In life we have to learn to articulate
the phrasal 'put up with'." -
12:44 - 12:47He articulated it in a different way.
-
12:47 - 12:48Well, he told us,
-
12:48 - 12:51"I put up with, you put up with,
he puts up with." -
12:52 - 12:54"We put up with," said the teacher.
-
12:54 - 12:56Rafael learnt how to articulate it:
-
12:56 - 12:58"I put up with myself, I put up with you."
-
12:58 - 12:59I was hard to put up with.
-
12:59 - 13:03For many years I made him train
with balls in bad shape, -
13:03 - 13:06with tennis courts in bad shape.
-
13:06 - 13:09I told him, "We are going to train
for one hour and a half," -
13:09 - 13:13and then I used to go on
with the training indefinitely -
13:13 - 13:18because I was interested in making
him learn how to put up with everything. -
13:18 - 13:23I was interested in teaching him how
to strengthen, mainly, his character. -
13:23 - 13:25I think that this is decisive,
-
13:25 - 13:28that is what has been decisive in life.
-
13:28 - 13:31I believe that character builds up
thanks to difficulty. -
13:31 - 13:35And I think this is
the great mistake nowadays. -
13:35 - 13:40Nowadays, the children having
so many more things, -
13:40 - 13:44having all the technology behind them,
-
13:44 - 13:48even having nutritionists,
-
13:48 - 13:52having biomechanical studies,
-
13:52 - 13:57audiovisual studies, analyzing the hits,
-
13:57 - 14:00statistics that tell you what to do,
-
14:00 - 14:04in the end,
people find it harder to improve. -
14:05 - 14:07I give a very clear example.
-
14:07 - 14:10When we arrived
to the professional circuit, -
14:10 - 14:14the first ones there were:
-
14:14 - 14:16Hewitt, 21 years old.
-
14:16 - 14:18Roddick, 20 years old.
-
14:19 - 14:22This Swiss was already there, 21, Federer.
-
14:22 - 14:25Coria, 21. Nalbaldian, 21.
-
14:26 - 14:29Ferrero, 23. Safin, 24.
-
14:29 - 14:34I think Moyá and Agassi were there,
they were a bit older. -
14:35 - 14:41Nowadays, the top ones are:
-
14:42 - 14:44Federer, 36.
-
14:44 - 14:46Rafael, about to turn 32.
-
14:47 - 14:49Murray and Djokovic, 31.
-
14:49 - 14:51Wawrinka, 33.
-
14:53 - 14:55Del Potro, about to turn 30.
-
14:55 - 14:58Čilić, 30. Berdych, 33.
-
14:59 - 15:00What has happened?
-
15:00 - 15:02Why does it take so much to the new ones
-
15:02 - 15:06to replace the old ones nowadays?
-
15:06 - 15:09I think it is simply because
they haven't understood -
15:09 - 15:11what is essential.
-
15:11 - 15:13The essential ...
-
15:14 - 15:16Obviously, I'm not against technology.
-
15:16 - 15:19The world progresses and technology
is going to help us, -
15:20 - 15:22but I think there are things that,
-
15:23 - 15:27mostly on the training stages, don't help.
-
15:27 - 15:29Making the life of the young ones so easy
-
15:29 - 15:32I don't think it helps at all.
-
15:33 - 15:36I believe that sometimes it's better
-
15:36 - 15:40to restrict a bit the advances
-
15:40 - 15:43and go back to the essential.
-
15:43 - 15:47For us the essential was always:
-
15:49 - 15:51perseverance,
-
15:51 - 15:55it was the respect to the opponent,
-
15:55 - 15:59it was the effort, it was the sacrifice,
it was the discipline. -
15:59 - 16:03Technologies weren't ever the essential.
-
16:03 - 16:08I think that's what all the young ones
should understand. -
16:08 - 16:12This is what I understand
that was fundamental in Rafael: -
16:12 - 16:17be sure that everything that happened
was his responsibility, -
16:18 - 16:20being ready to fight until the end.
-
16:20 - 16:22Rafael had many problems,
-
16:22 - 16:25physical, of injuries ...
-
16:25 - 16:27I do not like complaints,
-
16:27 - 16:30when he used to tell me that he had
many problems, I answered, -
16:30 - 16:33"Well, this is what it is,
that's what with have to fight with." -
16:33 - 16:37And I understand this is fundamental,
not only for Rafael, -
16:37 - 16:39but for anybody who aspire
-
16:39 - 16:44to reach high goals.
-
16:44 - 16:47I've confirmed many years later
-
16:49 - 16:55that I used to think that Borg, McEnroe,
Lendl, were exceptional people, -
16:55 - 17:01also, I used to think that their coaches
were also great managers. -
17:01 - 17:06I believed that they have been gifted
with a special talent. -
17:06 - 17:11Well, I have verified that
a boy from Manacor, a normal child, -
17:11 - 17:17well, I don't know if he has reached
McEnroe's or Lendl's level, -
17:17 - 17:20but that with effort, with sacrifice,
-
17:20 - 17:23he has managed to reach many goals
-
17:24 - 17:26that he decided when he was young.
-
17:26 - 17:31That's why I understand that
if he has managed to make it, -
17:31 - 17:36obviously many people,
many of us, can make it. -
17:36 - 17:41I don't know if everybody could
become world number one, -
17:41 - 17:44right now, number two from Monday on,
-
