0:00 - 0:02Hello Guardians.
Today we're going to go over setting -
0:02 - 0:09up Tor on a non-rooted android with Orbot.
First things first. We're going to go to either -
0:09 - 0:20the F-droid repository or go to the google
play store and search for Orbot. You can see -
0:20 - 0:29right there orbot tor on android and we're
going to do a quick install. Right here you -
0:29 - 0:37can see users also installed our sister app,
to Orbot, Orweb, which is the way to browse -
0:37 - 0:44the internet through Tor in the browser. So
we're going to go ahead and install tat as -
0:44 - 0:54well. and wait for those guys to download.
So we can see those are installing right now. -
0:54 - 1:05we have a little Orbot pulled up. We can now
choose the language. I'm going to choose english -
1:05 - 1:16for the English speaking crowd here. It goes
through some of our warnings and instructions. -
1:16 - 1:21We try to be explicit about which permissions
we're going to be accessing just so that everybody -
1:21 - 1:28is comfortable with the tool. If you do have
a rooted phone, it does allow for additional -
1:28 - 1:35permissions that you don't have here. You
can see a list of Orbot enabled apps. All -
1:35 - 1:43of these tools you can actually plug in Orbot's
proxy settings to use those tools through -
1:43 - 1:50Tor. So now Orbot is ready. We're going to
finish. -
1:50 - 1:53Now this is Orbot in
-
1:53 - 2:02its dormant mode. You just click and hold
and you can see Orbot starting up. It's bootstrapping, -
2:02 - 2:10looking for all the proper Tor connections.
It goes from a nice little grey, to a yellow -
2:10 - 2:16while it's loading and it should turn green
shortly. You can see the speeds now, this -
2:16 - 2:22has changed a little bit. The first time you've
connected it gives s a little instruction -
2:22 - 2:29on how to contact us directly. You can shoot
us a message at support@guardianproject.info. -
2:29 - 2:35And otherwise it says you've had success.
now, how do we double check that? Well we -
2:35 - 2:46go to our sister app Orweb and as soon as
you open up Orweb it'll go to check.torproject.org -
2:46 - 2:54which will actually notify you to say whether
or not you're using Tor. So, congrats you're -
2:54 - 3:01configured to use Tor. You'll see the nice
green. If there's an error it'll actually -
3:01 - 3:05say that you're not configured to use Tor
and that you're not using it so please be -
3:05 - 3:12mindful of this. You can also all the localization
so that it's in local languages as well. Now -
3:12 - 3:19we're going to pull orbot back up. For you
advanced users out there you might need to -
3:19 - 3:28tweak some of the settings, particularly if
you're in a place where Tor is blocked. You -
3:28 - 3:31can see some pretty detailed settings here.
-
3:31 - 3:34And you might need
-
3:34 - 3:45to actually use bridges. I want to walk through
how we can actually get those bridges. We're -
3:45 - 3:52going to out of here and go into another browser.
We're going to go into chrome. You can go -
3:52 - 4:00directly to bridges.torproject.org. we're
just going to click on there. and you can -
4:00 - 4:08see the ability to download some bridges after
you've solved the captcha. Click "I am human" -
4:08 - 4:18to prove it. You can see the bridge relays
right there. Now, if we actually need other -
4:18 - 4:26types of bridges, let's do that. Obfsproxy
is a pretty exciting new development. it hides -
4:26 - 4:33Tor in a creative new way that makes it look
like it's not Tor. it makes the traffic itself -
4:33 - 4:41look more like Skype and other kinds of traffic,
making it even harder to censor. you can actually -
4:41 - 4:52ask for this by clicking the obfsproxy option
and again solving the captcha, clicking -
4:52 - 5:10"i am human" and then we have our obfsproxy proxy bridge so we're going to highlight this, copy
-
5:10 - 5:29that, go back into orbot, back into settings.
We can scroll down, click use bridges and -
5:29 - 5:50enter in the IP address of that bridge, go
back into orweb and you can see that we are -
5:50 - 5:57still connected and now using an obfsproxy
bridge. -
5:57 - 6:00I hope that was helpful
-
6:00 - 6:08to all of you who want Tor on your phone and
for those of you who have Tor currently blocked -
6:08 - 6:14in your country but still want access through
your phone. If you have any other questions, -
6:14 - 6:22always feel free to reach out to us at support@guardianproject.info.
Alright, happy Tor-ing. Bye! -
