How to HEAL the Past and the Future | Teaching by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh

  • 0:07 - 0:11
    To practice mindfulness does not
mean that you have no right
  • 0:11 - 0:13
to look back at the past
  • 0:13 - 0:17
or to make plan for the future.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
A few of us think that...
  • 0:20 - 0:23
    to practice mindfulness,
you have only the right to...
  • 0:23 - 0:26
dwell in the here and the now.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
    We have to know that...
  • 0:30 - 0:32
we can learn quite a lot
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    when we practice looking deeply
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    into the past.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
But looking deeply into the past,
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    we can still...
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    (be) dwelling firmly
    in the present moment.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    In fact,
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    if you are not
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    established firmly
    in the present moment,
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    you cannot...
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    inquire
  • 1:05 - 1:08
and look deeply into the past.
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    You only get lost
  • 1:10 - 1:11
    in the past.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    You get lost in the...
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    regret.. the feeling of regret
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    or guilt
  • 1:20 - 1:22
    about the past.
  • 1:22 - 1:26
It is exactly that that the Buddha
    advised us not to do
  • 1:26 - 1:28
    i.e. not to get lost
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    in our sorrow,
  • 1:30 - 1:33
in our attachment towards the past.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    But you have the right
    to study the past,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
to look deeply into the past
    in order to...
  • 1:40 - 1:41
    learn.
  • 1:41 - 1:46
And the past is not exactly nonexistent...
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    in the present moment.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    Those of us who practice...
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    meditation,
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    looking deeply in our...
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    in the present moment,
we know the past is still available
  • 2:02 - 2:06
in the form of the present.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    And getting deeply in touch
    with the present moment,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
you get in touch with the past.
  • 2:11 - 2:14
And you can even modify the past,
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    change the past,
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    heal the past.
  • 2:24 - 2:28
    The past may have left...
  • 2:28 - 2:29
    the wounds
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    and scars
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    that can be recognized,
can be felt, in the present moment.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
In the past, they had done
    cruel things to you.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
In the past, you had done
    cruel things to them.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    And these...
  • 2:45 - 2:46
    wounds,
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    these scars are still there,
    and you still suffer.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
But if you know how to dwell
    in the present moment,
  • 2:53 - 2:56
if you know how to embrace all these...
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    wounds,
  • 2:59 - 3:02
and look deeply into their nature,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    then you can heal them.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    You can heal the past.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
The teaching of the Buddha is
everything is created by our mind.
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    If we have made mistakes,
  • 3:18 - 3:21
it is because of our mind
    full of...
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    delusion,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    and anger,
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    and pride.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
And then in the present moment,
  • 3:30 - 3:33
    you make determination
    to transform your mind.
  • 3:33 - 3:39
You don't allow these negative elements
    of mind to continue operating.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    And if you can...
  • 3:41 - 3:44
    effectuate a change
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    in your mind,
  • 3:46 - 3:50
    then the healing will
    take place right away
  • 3:50 - 3:53
    in the present moment.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    The future also.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    The future is already there.
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    The best way
  • 4:03 - 4:05
to take care of the future
  • 4:05 - 4:08
is to take care of the present.
  • 4:08 - 4:13
Because the present will be the substance
with which the future will be made.
  • 4:15 - 4:20
You may spend a lot of energy and time
    worrying about the future.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    But to worry...
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    ...is very harming.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    It is ruining the future.
  • 4:28 - 4:34
The only thing you can do is to
take real good care of the present moment.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
And when the present is good,
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    then you can be sure
    the future will be good.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    And if you practice mindful...
  • 4:44 - 4:48
    looking, i.e. deep looking,
    you can see...
  • 4:48 - 4:52
already that the future is already
    there in the present moment.
