How to Write a Great Resume and Cover Letter
-
0:01 - 0:04What makes a great resume and a great
cover letter? -
0:04 - 0:09What's important to know is that these are
marketing documents. -
0:09 - 0:12It's also important to know that the
average employer now takes up only -
0:12 - 0:14about seven seconds, so they're not
-
0:14 - 0:17reading these resumes, they're skimming
these resumes. -
0:17 - 0:22So they need to know right off the bat how
you add value. -
0:22 - 0:27So here's a great example of a recent
alum's resume. -
0:27 - 0:30It's one page, although two pages would be
fine. -
0:30 - 0:34This person has their contact information.
-
0:34 - 0:37They are then listing their education,
although it's -
0:37 - 0:39possible to put the education at the
bottom. -
0:39 - 0:41You need to ask yourself, is it my
-
0:41 - 0:44education that's more marketable or is it
my experience? -
0:44 - 0:49This is also a good resume because rather
than just a mini job description in the -
0:49 - 0:53experience section, this former student is
using what -
0:53 - 0:58we call 'accomplishment statements' to
describe his experience. -
0:58 - 0:59Basically, three criteria.
-
0:59 - 1:03You want to begin with a nice strong
action verb and on our, -
1:03 - 1:07in our resume writing handout, we have a
list of 100 plus action verbs. -
1:07 - 1:09Then, as you write each of your sentences
or -
1:09 - 1:12phrases, you want to say to yourself, so
what? -
1:12 - 1:16Big deal, so I did that. How did I make a
difference? -
1:16 - 1:19Did I increase anything, decrease, modify,
or change? -
1:19 - 1:23So if it's possible to pull out
accomplishments and results. -
1:23 - 1:26And the third criteria would be to
quantify information. -
1:26 - 1:30Here's another strong example of a resume.
-
1:30 - 1:33What I like about what the student did is
in the experience section. -
1:33 - 1:36She has strong action verbs,
-
1:36 - 1:39she has strong results, but she also has
strong numbers. -
1:39 - 1:43She was able to quantify her results and
accomplishments. -
1:44 - 1:46In terms of cover letters, it's important
again -
1:46 - 1:49to know that this is another marketing
document, relevant. -
1:49 - 1:53Should be one page and should be a highly
customized document. -
1:53 - 1:57And basically, cover letters are answering
two questions. -
1:57 - 2:01Why you for that specific position at that
specific organization? -
2:01 - 2:05So it's certainly important to have a
strong resume and a cover letter, -
2:05 - 2:08but it's important to remember that the
-
2:08 - 2:11number one job search strategy is
networking. -
2:11 - 2:14And you don't want to have an entirely
reactive job search, just -
2:14 - 2:20reacting to jobs that are posted on
internet job boards, for example. -
2:20 - 2:22The problem is, you don't know them, they
don't know -
2:22 - 2:26you, your odds of being called in are
probably slim. -
2:26 - 2:29So I highly encourage you to implement
-
2:29 - 2:32networking, to conduct the series of
informational meetings. -
2:32 - 2:36So in fact, they're meeting you first and
then your resume comes along. -
2:36 - 2:40And it's more of a placeholder and then it
doesn't weight as much.
