The History of Twin Peaks - glitboy

  • 0:02 - 0:08
    me
  • 0:07 - 0:11
20 peaks may just be the most
    influential television show ball time
  • 0:11 - 0:15
with inspiring decade's worth a video
games movies and other television shows
  • 0:16 - 0:19
so today I wanted to share brief history
on what I believed to be one of the
  • 0:20 - 0:22
    greatest television shows
  • 0:22 - 0:32
ever created in 1977 and then a movie
director by the name of David Lynch
  • 0:32 - 0:34
complete his first feature length film a
    reserve head
  • 0:34 - 0:37
which are going to be huge cock classic
in the beginning of which is successful
  • 0:38 - 0:38
    career
  • 0:39 - 0:43
will know given wider claim those 1980s
    the Elephant Man
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    starring Anthony Hopkins nineteenth
century London after becoming one of the
  • 0:48 - 0:51
most famous directors in the world
through the eighties let's decide to
  • 0:51 - 0:54
take in our turn by developing a
    television show with Mark frost
  • 0:54 - 0:57
was formerly a writer for hill street
blues well may not seem like an
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    incredible job today
  • 0:59 - 1:02
    in nineteen ninety television content
was nowhere near the quality as it is
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    now
  • 1:04 - 1:07
with most the shows either being
    multi-camera sitcoms or procedurals
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    about doctors cops are lawyers
  • 1:10 - 1:14
but the chip so neatly wrapping up the
story with very little overarching plot
  • 1:14 - 1:18
at the time most consider television to
    be below film
  • 1:18 - 1:21
so the idea that successful and
    established director would succumb to
  • 1:21 - 1:23
creating a television show seem like a
    crazy move
  • 1:24 - 1:27
but with the backing a baby seal engine
    frost went to work
  • 1:28 - 1:32
on april eighth nineteen ninety the
pilot episode of Twin Peaks was aired
  • 1:32 - 1:35
featuring the story of the high school
girl Laura Palmer being found dead
  • 1:35 - 1:37
without a clue who the murderer was
  • 1:38 - 1:42
this these FBI agent dale cooper being
sent to the small Washington State town
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    help local authorities uncover the
    mystery a Palmer step
  • 1:45 - 1:49
for the premise may seem simple enough
David Lynch in mark frost set up the
  • 1:49 - 1:51
show to seem like a basic oxy result
    paper
  • 1:52 - 1:55
even know that's only scratching the
surface of what lies in store
  • 1:55 - 1:59
the talent when peace is filled with odd
and sometimes real characters that much
  • 2:00 - 2:01
of the investigation will focus on
  • 2:02 - 2:06
we have aged Dale Cooper played by Kyle
MacLachlan we'll come to realize really
  • 2:06 - 2:06
    likes copy
  • 2:07 - 2:16
    a lot
  • 2:17 - 2:22
you know this is excuse me a damn fine
    couple com
  • 2:22 - 2:26
some the other locals living in twin
peaks are harry truman who the sheriff
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    Bobby Briggs Laura's boyfriend
  • 2:28 - 2:31
Leland her father and Donna Hayward her
    best friend
  • 2:31 - 2:34
but as the show goes on we'll find out
that everyone in this community has
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    their secrets
  • 2:35 - 2:39
Twin Peaks is a very similar feel as
much a day villages for work
  • 2:40 - 2:44
it's odd surreal and oftentimes big in
the way gives the audience information
  • 2:44 - 2:47
    warbling instanceof which is signature
style is that many of the characters
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    acting very strange ways
  • 2:50 - 2:54
and see things that would never work in
any other show for instance there's a
  • 2:54 - 2:57
lady in the town that goes around
talking to a piece of wood all day
  • 2:57 - 3:01
that everyone calls you guessed it the
log lady and no one ever questions that
  • 3:01 - 3:05
either is just something that goes on in
the world that the show takes place in
  • 3:05 - 3:09
well we're on the subject to the show's
weirdness we can now forget to mention
  • 3:08 - 3:12
it's absolutely bizarre get some help
    perfect dream sequences
  • 3:13 - 3:17
usually involving a Red Room Laura
Palmer and it worked that speech in
  • 3:16 - 3:16
    reverse
  • 3:17 - 3:20
he's probably the most memorable segment
on the show that allow the viewer to
  • 3:21 - 3:25
piece together some the town's mysteries
    through almost nonsensical dialogue
  • 3:25 - 3:29
the creator of The Sopranos David Chase
sites to impeach is an inspiration for
  • 3:30 - 3:31
    his dream scenes
  • 3:30 - 3:33
even he admits he was never able to
match them I mean that's saying
  • 3:34 - 3:37
something when even the Sopranos can
    region other shows quality
  • 3:37 - 3:41
what are my personal favorite aspects to
    the show's soundtrack
  • 3:42 - 3:45
still considered one of the best in
television the sure really goes for
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    moody Jess type sound
  • 3:47 - 3:51
almost matching what you hear in an old
war movie mix with almost all cheesy
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    soap opera music
  • 3:52 - 3:55
I feel it really adds to the intrigue
and let the audience know that their
  • 3:56 - 4:02
    mysteries yet to be uncovered
  • 4:02 - 4:06
when Twin Peaks went on the air in 1990
it became an instant hit with an
  • 4:07 - 4:09
audience looking for something new and
    different to watch
  • 4:10 - 4:13
this was a time before people start
    taking risks with original programming
  • 4:14 - 4:17
and everything else on the network or
basic procedural they're wrapped up the
  • 4:17 - 4:18
murder by the end of the episode
  • 4:19 - 4:22
between pete was different it was
    created by critically acclaimed
  • 4:22 - 4:23
    filmmaker
  • 4:23 - 4:26
had a story and characters that stretch
throughout the show and most importantly
  • 4:27 - 4:31
it wasn't afraid to push the limits of
what the TV viewer was willing to watch
  • 4:31 - 4:35
I'll at the time all eyes run David
Lynch in mark frost Art Show
  • 4:35 - 4:39
    but unfortunately things slowly change
one less and less people tuned in to
  • 4:39 - 4:40
    watch by the second season
  • 4:41 - 4:44
well Twin Peaks start out strong it seem
that its greatest strength was also its
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    biggest weakness
  • 4:46 - 4:50
the continuous pod won't present day a
person can just go in Netflix to catch
  • 4:50 - 4:51
    up on their favorite show
  • 4:52 - 4:55
back in nineteen ninety if you missed an
episode you'd be left in the dark
  • 4:55 - 4:58
this is only worse for 20 peak since
even when watching all the episodes in
  • 4:59 - 5:01
order the viewer was left wondering what
    was going on
  • 5:02 - 5:06
aside effectively just I'll so at the
end of season 2 20 X was officially
  • 5:07 - 5:07
    canceled
  • 5:08 - 5:12
the final nail in the coffin was a
prequel film fire walk with me
  • 5:12 - 5:15
which focuses around the murder of
Teresa banks in the last seven days have
  • 5:15 - 5:16
    laura palmer's life
  • 5:17 - 5:20
the film was panned by both critics and
    many fans to the show
  • 5:20 - 5:24
with a major problem being the lack of
agent Cooper the movie did so poorly at
  • 5:24 - 5:27
the box office that didn't even make up
    have this production costs
  • 5:28 - 5:31
which probably shouldn't have been a
surprise for a movie based on a show
  • 5:31 - 5:33
that was canceled because not enough
    people were watching
  • 5:33 - 5:36
while the show might have ended that
didn't mean it wasn't fresh in the minds
  • 5:37 - 5:39
of countless people that were inspired
    by it
  • 5:39 - 5:43
lead some the most popular shows movies
and video games the past two decades
  • 5:43 - 5:45
    being influenced by twenty peaks
  • 5:45 - 5:49
    in
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    I'll
  • 5:52 - 5:56
to show how much this one show influence
media let's take a look at some examples
  • 5:56 - 5:59
starting up without Twin Peaks rubbed
off on the legend Zelda series
  • 6:00 - 6:03
it must be said the Twin Peaks was
    pretty big in Japan
  • 6:03 - 6:08
so much so that aging Cooper was used to
    peddle copy on commercials
  • 6:09 - 6:12
but think about this over a cough slowly
    she
  • 6:12 - 6:15
    Co incredible
  • 6:15 - 6:19
you to have got to try this its rich
mental madness Georgia is damn buying
  • 6:20 - 6:20
    coffee
  • 6:20 - 6:24
true but with this it shouldn't be a
shock to anyone that the likes of the
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    Japanese company Nintendo will get
inspiration for The Legend of Zelda
  • 6:28 - 6:29
    Link's Awakening from it
  • 6:29 - 6:32
in interviews with the game's creators
they admitted that their game featured
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    suspicious takes is Cassie characters
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    influence mileage is murder mystery
another reference a twin peaks in Zelda
  • 6:40 - 6:43
that I accidentally stumble upon was
settled into the past ending music
  • 6:43 - 6:46
seems to be clearly inspired by Twin
    Peaks intro theme
  • 6:47 - 6:51
but don't take my word for it listen for
    yourself
  • 6:51 - 7:09
    the new the warden's
  • 7:10 - 7:17
    when whens
  • 7:17 - 7:20
    when
  • 7:20 - 7:24
    when
  • 7:24 - 7:28
    on
  • 7:28 - 7:32
as far as I can tell no one else on the
internet has made the song connection
  • 7:32 - 7:32
    yet
  • 7:32 - 7:35
but to me it seems far too coincidental
since a link to the past was being
  • 7:36 - 7:38
developed when twin peaks was on the air
  • 7:38 - 7:43
    the video game Deadly Premonition
release in 2010 also took inspiration
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    from the show
  • 7:44 - 7:48
so much so that it almost crosses into
    strata copying
  • 7:47 - 7:51
for one the main characters an FBI agent
their travels to a small town to
  • 7:51 - 7:54
investigate the murder of a teenage girl
  • 7:53 - 7:57
not only this but he also really
injuries copy and had strange dreams
  • 7:57 - 8:01
there's also a lady who cares around the
park a deputy their cries a crime scenes
  • 8:02 - 8:05
a place called rangy diner and several
other plot points in locations that
  • 8:06 - 8:07
    share resemblance it when peeps
  • 8:07 - 8:10
ever that the first version at the game
    was even more similar
  • 8:10 - 8:13
if that's even possible to the
developers had to go back in revamp the
  • 8:14 - 8:17
story to make it slightly more original
  • 8:17 - 8:21
along with video games 20s influence
other TV shows in both small and very
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    big ways
  • 8:22 - 8:25
first of all there were tons of examples
of shows that a few mercy reference that
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    this includes Scooby Doo mystery
Incorporated in which Scooby dreams over
  • 8:30 - 8:34
Red Room that inhabited by a short man
    the toxin numbers
  • 8:34 - 8:37
gone let's see the new home
  • 8:37 - 8:42
    rule the new
  • 8:43 - 8:48
good we also have an app so did the show
psych in which shot and Spencer are
  • 8:49 - 8:51
invited to a small town called Il spires
  • 8:51 - 8:54
which is home to a ridiculous amount of
    actors that worked on 26
  • 8:55 - 9:00
I also want to mention one in my current
favorite TV shows airing gravity falls
  • 9:00 - 9:03
for those who don't know what her boss
Ron Mabel and dipper pines who are
  • 9:03 - 9:05
staying with her grandfather in a small
    town over the summer
  • 9:06 - 9:09
but once they get there they find out
more is going on in the first stop
  • 9:10 - 9:14
even with the show running on the Disney
    Channel the creator straight-out admits
  • 9:14 - 9:16
that much about the spider bite when
    peaks
  • 9:16 - 9:20
including the two main characters being
twins taking place in a small town in
  • 9:20 - 9:22
washington stay where strange things are
    occurring
  • 9:23 - 9:26
and just look at some of those
backgrounds they weren't even trying to
  • 9:26 - 9:26
    be subtle
  • 9:27 - 9:31
I also can forget about the killing
which first two seasons fall the allies
  • 9:31 - 9:34
have two detectives as they try to
discover who murdered a girl named Rosie
  • 9:34 - 9:34
    Larsen
  • 9:35 - 9:38
why can't find any official interviews
with the writers admitting that it was
  • 9:38 - 9:39
    inspired by 26
  • 9:40 - 9:44
while watching I couldn't help but
compare them both shows involve finding
  • 9:44 - 9:45
the murder of a teenage girl
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    offshore casinos personal video tapes
    being a part per
  • 9:49 - 9:53
mystery and let's not forget they both
    take place in Washington State
  • 9:54 - 9:57
wayward Pines yet another show that
seems to be taking major influence from
  • 9:57 - 9:57
    26
  • 9:58 - 10:01
with the main character being a federal
agent sent to investigate a murder in a
  • 10:02 - 10:04
    small northwestern American town
  • 10:04 - 10:08
their strange things taking place behind
the scenes now believe me I can go on
  • 10:09 - 10:12
all day about the different shows movies
and video games to take influence from
  • 10:13 - 10:13
    Twin Peaks
  • 10:14 - 10:18
but we be here all day it's amazing how
such a short live show that was canceled
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    furloughed viewership over twenty years
    ago
  • 10:21 - 10:24
has become one of the most influential
    television programs of all time
  • 10:24 - 10:28
even though so much time has passed
since it went off the air in 1991 fans
  • 10:29 - 10:31
have always held onto the hope that
there may be one more trick up the
  • 10:32 - 10:33
    villages sleep
  • 10:33 - 10:36
and then out of nowhere it was announced
that a new season of the beloved show is
  • 10:37 - 10:37
    being made
  • 10:37 - 10:40
the team the stories of all the citizens
    it when peaks
  • 10:40 - 10:43
well these new apps owes Intel I have no
    idea
  • 10:44 - 10:47
but knowing when she'll probably be very
    very
  • 10:47 - 10:54
very surreal just like it should be
  • 10:55 - 10:58
well there you have my brief history it
when peak said if you enjoy the you
  • 10:58 - 11:01
click here to subscriber click here to
check out some my other videos
  • 11:01 - 11:05
so until next time thanks for watching
    good
  • 11:06 - 11:15
    on factors just lukewarm water
  • 11:14 - 11:15
    absolutely disgusting
