My name is
Brandon Showell.

Do you sing for a living?

I started on cruise ships.

I know, right? Yeah.

-Let me sit up.
-Uh-oh.

'Cause you know I used to
do cruise ships, too.

-What?
-I know that, yes.

-Oh, y'all didn't know that?
-Unh-unh.

So did I. So did I.
Whatever she did, I did it, too.

Okay. Good.
[ Laughter ]

I used that experience, and,
I don't know if you did,

I said,
"If I can get through this,

then that means I'm cut out
to do a show like this.

But if I can't, then I should
just go home and sit down."

And look at where I am today.
You know what I mean?

From that experience, I can
help you be able to get here

and beyond and wherever
you would like to go.

[ Cheers and applause ]

But my full-time job
is that I'm an English teacher,

and my kids have no idea
that I sing.

-Oh, my God.
-What?

-Wow. Cat's out of the bag!
-Huh!

Well, they do now.
-Yeah.

Adam: Um...

I did turn my chair
much, much --

like, noticeably...

faster than --
than the other two.

Because when I heard you
singing,

it didn't matter,
really,

what anyone else thought
in that moment.

It mattered how I felt.

And I love that
you're an English teacher

because look at this whole other
person that's there, you know,

that -- that hasn't
gotten the recognition

that --
that they deserve.

Yeah, y-you're amazing.

I have something small
to add.

Keep -- Keep me in mind, there.

It's just small. It's actually
just small. [ Laughs ]

I don't think there should
ever be a difference

between someone's artistry
and who they truly are.

I did a TV show like that
where I went to school by day

and then was a pop star
by night.

That was too confusing.
-But it worked.

Like, what hair
should I be wearing? Ah!

But I would love for you not to
have two separate lives.

It should be about you,

it should be about
what you represent,

and I think I represent
young people,

and I think you do, too,
of what we want to teach them,

which is, I think, about
amazing, amazing music.

You got to take it for
all the schoolteachers

to remember never give up.
