The Dream | Ahmed Wakeel | TEDxYouth@TheNile

  • 0:12 - 0:14
    I'm glad to be here!
  • 0:14 - 0:18
It's an honor that I'm performing
    the first TEDxYouth Del Cairo.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
First I'd like to begin by
    asking you all a question.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
Why do you do what you do?
  • 0:24 - 0:25
    I'll tell you why.
  • 0:25 - 0:29
You do what you do because
you're either three of these people,
  • 0:29 - 0:32
    you're either just working hard,
you have no dream, no vision
  • 0:32 - 0:34
and you have no compelling reason.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    Or you have a dream,
    and you have a vision,
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    you want to achieve something,
But you just don't have the belief
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    that you can achieve it.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
Or you are the person number three,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
you have something you want to achieve
  • 0:45 - 0:47
and day by day you are committed.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    You are committed and consistent
    to achieving your dream.
  • 0:51 - 0:53
    From my perspective,
    and I can guarantee you
  • 0:53 - 0:56
that from all of your perspectives,
    the person number three
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    is the most efficient
    and productive person.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    First, before I begin,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
I'd like to give credits to a man
    that has inspired this speech.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    This man is called
    Pathman Senathirajah
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    Pathman Senathirajah is
    a Malaysian network marketer.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    He made a video called
  • 1:12 - 1:15
    "the eight basic building blocks".
    Basically discussing
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    the most important building blocks
    for network marketing
  • 1:18 - 1:19
    or for business.
  • 1:20 - 1:24
The most important building block which is
block number one was called "the dream".
  • 1:24 - 1:28
    The dream is basically what
    develops all your actions;
  • 1:28 - 1:31
all your actions, all your decisions
    are based on this dream.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
Because like life, without the dream.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
    Your actions don't mean anything,
  • 1:37 - 1:41
this is the most important one,
    this is the biggest block,
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    this is why your decisions
    and actions are taken.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    Now, what is this dream?
    What is a dream?
  • 1:48 - 1:51
A dream is not something you think about
    when you are sleeping.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    It's something you can't sleep
    because you are thinking about.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
    It's something that circulates
in your head for 24 hours
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    everyday, of every week,
of every month of every year.
  • 2:01 - 2:05
It's something that you're willing to pay
any price so you can achieve.
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    My personal dreams are,
at some point of my life,
  • 2:08 - 2:11
I'd like to buy a Rolls Royce and
I'd like to attend private university
  • 2:11 - 2:14
and then I'd like to live in
    a Miami Beach house.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
Now, I want every single one of you
    to close your eyes.
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    Everyone, close your eyes.
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    Close your eyes, everyone.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
Now, I'd like you to think of the thing
    you want most in life,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
the thing you are willing to pay any price
    so you can get.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Now, on your way out
    in the conversation break
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    There'll be a board outside,
  • 2:34 - 2:36
I want every single one of you
    to write your dream,
  • 2:36 - 2:38
I want you draw the thing
    down on paper.
  • 2:41 - 2:42
    Now, open your eyes.
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    Moreover,
  • 2:45 - 2:48
    looking back every child
    was a dreamer.
  • 2:48 - 2:50
Every single child grew up as a dreamer,
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    your childhood was about
I want this and I want that
  • 2:53 - 2:57
but as you grow up, that skill,
    that capability grows off you
  • 2:57 - 3:00
and that is the saddest thing
    I've seen in life.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
When I see a fully grown up adult who
has lost the capability to dream
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    because anyone can dream.
  • 3:06 - 3:09
If your are eighty, if your are five,
    you can have a dream
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    no matter how big or
    how small your dream is.
  • 3:12 - 3:16
Now, I'd like to show a demonstration
    of what dreaming is about.
  • 3:16 - 3:20
    If I give you a key to a Rolls-Royce
    parked outside right now,
  • 3:21 - 3:23
and you go and you drive your Rolls-Royce,
  • 3:23 - 3:25
and you're driving with music in the car
  • 3:25 - 3:26
    but you don't know
    where to go.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    You have no destination.
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    So why have a Rolls-Royce,
    or why have a vehicle,
  • 3:31 - 3:33
when you don't have a destination
  • 3:33 - 3:34
    Just like dreaming.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
    Why do actions?
    Why make decisions?
  • 3:37 - 3:39
when you don't have a cause
and you don't have a reason?
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    Because that's the difference
between us and computers right now,
  • 3:43 - 3:46
they can process faster than us,
they can take actions faster than us,
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    but we have the capability to dream;
    we are dreamers.
  • 3:51 - 3:57
And because I like to think of it
like, because, a dead man --
  • 3:58 - 4:00
    I'm sorry, I made a mistake --
  • 4:01 - 4:05
a person who does not have a dream
is as good as a dead man.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
I'm going to go off-topic a bit right now
but you're going to connect later.
  • 4:10 - 4:14
What is this thing called success
    everyone is talking about?
  • 4:14 - 4:15
    What is success?
  • 4:16 - 4:19
Success is not being the best
    or the richest man
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    who ever walked the Earth.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
It's not being the best plastic surgeon
    on the planet.
  • 4:23 - 4:27
Success is achieving what you want,
    what is in your head.
  • 4:27 - 4:30
    Success is achieving your dream
and what you want is your dream.
  • 4:31 - 4:32
    Thank you.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    (Applause)

  • An OK transcription, I've made some tweaks, which I strongly encourage you to review by comparing with the previous version. The major ones are highlighted below:

1:00.22 - I think he said "to a man that has inspired this speech"
3:28.12 - He says "why have a rolls-royce or vehicle"
3:36.66 - "tap" changed to "have"

When transcribing please do a review of the transcription after you finish it, because maybe words you heard and typed won't make sense in the sentence and it's really easy to spot those.

Also take care of the maximum speed of 21 characters/second on each subtitle.

    Cheers!

PS: I did edit the title to comply with new standards: http://translations.ted.org/wiki/How_to_Tackle_a_Transcript#Title_format
