-
0:07 - 0:10>> SPEAKER 1: Everything was fine, and then
no warning, he just liked attacked. -
0:10 - 0:12He meant business.
-
0:16 - 0:22He can be such a love and a sweetheart, but
then you just don't know what can happen. -
0:26 - 0:28>> SPEAKER 2: On our last trip to the Gabon,
I wanted to go and see Kwibi. -
0:28 - 0:30>> SPEAKER 1: We can't find him.
-
0:31 - 0:33>> SPEAKER 2: Hadn't seen him for five years.
-
0:33 - 0:37I was with Liz Pearson, who's the head of
our gorilla project. -
0:37 - 0:42Liz was very concerned; he had attacked the
last two people that had come across him. -
0:42 - 0:47>> SPEAKER 1: No stranger has been with them
for years. -
0:47 - 0:50>> SPEAKER 2: But I was really determined to
see him. -
0:51 - 0:56I got on a boat with my brother, and we went
up and down the river for several hours. -
0:56 - 0:59And I had this call for the gorillas.
-
0:59 - 1:01[Demonstrating call]
-
1:04 - 1:07And I was calling, and turned round the corner,
-
1:07 - 1:09and there was this magnificent now ten-year-old
gorilla, -
1:09 - 1:12and he hadn't seen me for five years,
-
1:12 - 1:16but he'd heard my voice and he came to the
edge of the river. -
1:17 - 1:18♪♪
-
1:25 - 1:29Lars [indistinct],
to throw food if it kicks off. -
1:31 - 1:35And as I sort of landed over the top, I was
a little concerned. -
1:35 - 1:36♪♪
-
1:46 - 1:49[Gorilla making guttural noise]
-
1:52 - 1:58But the moment I heard its deep love, rumbling
gurgle, I knew then that I was OK. -
2:09 - 2:13He looked in my eyes with such intensity and
such love, -
2:13 - 2:15and it was an incredible experience.
-
2:15 - 2:19And we just sat there together, sort of drunk
on each other. -
2:20 - 2:25He embraced me like a long-lost friend, and
it was just beautiful. -
2:26 - 2:29And he slowly introduced his wives who came
to see me. -
2:44 - 2:46Could you bring me over a sleeping bag?
-
2:46 - 2:49I don't quite know how I'm going to get out of here.
-
2:50 - 2:52And he wouldn't let me go.
-
3:04 - 3:08He scrambled off to get some raisins and I
managed to clamber back into the boat. -
3:10 - 3:15To my amazement, he then followed the boat
all the way back to our camp, -
3:15 - 3:21and on the other side of the river, he then
nested his family directly opposite where I sleep, -
3:21 - 3:24and all night long, he hooted.
-
3:24 - 3:25Calling for his friend.
-
3:27 - 3:31At six o'clock in the morning, I got up and
went for a swim in the river, -
3:31 - 3:35and you know, there he appeared on the edge
of the river. -
3:35 - 3:39Kwibi, lovely boy!
-
3:39 - 3:41I can see you!
-
3:41 - 3:44Just shows what a remarkable animal these
gorillas are, -
3:44 - 3:46and what a remarkable animal Kwibi is.
-
3:46 - 3:50I can honestly say it was one of the greatest
experiences of my life. -
