Basic Barré Chords #4of4 (Guitar Lesson CH-006) How to play
-
0:11 - 0:15And here we are for Part 4,
I haven't even moved yet. -
0:15 - 0:18So in this one we're looking
at A shaped barre chords. -
0:18 - 0:21And we're going to be
looking at the Minor version, -
0:21 - 0:24The Dominant 7 version,
and the Minor 7 version. -
0:24 - 0:30So, I think without further ado I'm going to get ready for a closeup.
-
0:30 - 0:32See you in a sec.
-
0:32 - 0:34So here we are now, this is
the 3rd fret we're on. -
0:34 - 0:38And this is, this would be our C
chord, our C barre chord. -
0:38 - 0:40Again, remembering all
of the way through this, -
0:40 - 0:42If I tuck that finger
away, you shouldn't do that, -
0:42 - 0:44I'm just doing that to make it clear for
you what the chord is. -
0:44 - 0:47So, there's your, the good old C chord.
-
0:47 - 0:50Now if we want to make it a C Minor chord,
-
0:50 - 0:53if we think back to what we did with
like our regular A chord, -
0:53 - 0:55There was our A Chord.
-
0:55 - 0:58Am chord, looked like that, it's
kind of like E chord isn't it? -
0:58 - 1:00But on the wrong strings.
-
1:00 - 1:05So funnily enough, Cm shape is also.
-
1:05 - 1:09If we had a G barre chord
with the 6th string group, -
1:09 - 1:13Remember we did that
in mastering barre chords 1. -
1:13 - 1:16Give me a G chord at the 3rd
fret, if we move everything down a string, -
1:16 - 1:21we end up with Cm.
-
1:21 - 1:25Now this might seem a little confusing, the fact that this was a Major shape here,
-
1:25 - 1:27and a minor shape on these strings.
-
1:27 - 1:31But I'm assuming you never got
E chord and Am chord mixed up. -
1:31 - 1:33They're the same
shape on different strings. -
1:33 - 1:36So all you have to do is
remember what string the Root note is on. -
1:36 - 1:40With our E shape, like G Major chord,
the Root note is here on the 6th string. -
1:40 - 1:43But now that we're working
from the 5th string Root, -
1:43 - 1:48that same, or very
similar shape, looks, or sounds, -
1:48 - 1:51rather, looks and sounds
and is, a Minor chord. -
1:51 - 1:55This one, we've got 1st finger
now doing the whole barre thing, -
1:55 - 1:57so it's barring right the way down,
-
1:57 - 2:00cause it also needs to hold
down the thinnest string as well, -
2:00 - 2:02We've got 3rd finger here,
this is on the 5th fret. -
2:02 - 2:05It's on the 3rd fret,
5th fret, 5th fret again, -
2:05 - 2:09this is the 2nd finger here,
pressing down on the 4th fret, -
2:09 - 2:13and 1st finger is playing also
the thinnest string up there as well. -
2:13 - 2:18And of course our 1st finger
is still muting that 6th string. -
2:18 - 2:20'Cause we don't want
that, if say for example, -
2:20 - 2:25this Cm chord, if we
forget to mute that 6th string, -
2:25 - 2:28I mean it just sounds really rank,
-
2:28 - 2:33make sure you're getting the tip
of that finger there muting that chord. -
2:33 - 2:36Muting that note rather not the chord.
-
2:36 - 2:38Really, really important.
-
2:38 - 2:40Ok so that's Cm.
-
2:40 - 2:44So we had C Major,which is the
one that everybody struggles with a little bit. -
2:44 - 2:46So if you're falling into
that category, be cool with that. -
2:46 - 2:49You know, it is a hard chord.
-
2:49 - 2:54And then, we've got the Cm.
-
2:54 - 3:02Now to get to Cm7 is quite a nice
one, all we do is lift off our little finger. -
3:02 - 3:03Very nice little chord.
-
3:03 - 3:08So this is now,1st fingers playing
the Root note here at the 5th string, -
3:08 - 3:11and muting the 6th string, I
keep repeating that because it's really important. -
3:11 - 3:133rd finger in the 5th fret,
-
3:13 - 3:16then on the 3rd string, we're
playing that note with our 1st finger, -
3:16 - 3:212nd finger is playing the 4th fret,
where it was before for the minor. -
3:21 - 3:25And we're using the barre
to play the thinnest string there, -
3:25 - 3:28also on the 3rd fret. So
it should be muted 6th string, -
3:28 - 3:36Now remember those things about keeping your finger a little bit rolled on to the side.
-
3:36 - 3:38It's really helpful.
-
3:38 - 3:40Remember it's not flat like
this, it's slightly onto the side. -
3:40 - 3:46And also remember that this note here on the
3rd string is gonna be the hardest one to get. -
3:46 - 3:47So that you might need
to make sure that you're pressing -
3:47 - 3:51down quite nice and hard in order
to get that note to ring out. -
3:51 - 3:56Now the last one from my little
series of looking at the 4 different types, -
3:56 - 3:58is this one here,
again that finger's normally there, -
3:58 - 4:00I'm just tucking it down
here to make it clear. -
4:00 - 4:02You can see now little
finger tucked in underneath there. -
4:02 - 4:06So this is 1st
finger muting the 6th string, -
4:06 - 4:09then it's playing the 3rd fret,
3rd finger on the 5th fret, -
4:09 - 4:141st finger will again be playing the
3rd fret there on the 3rd string. -
4:14 - 4:16Little finger down on the 5th fret,
-
4:16 - 4:21and the barre will be playing
the 3rd fret on the thinnest string. -
4:21 - 4:25That's your classic
kind of Blues chord. -
4:25 - 4:32So we have Major, remembering
to keep that knuckle forward, -
4:32 - 4:36that's the most important
part of that. Major, minor, -
4:36 - 4:47minor7, lift off little
finger as well, and 7, -
4:47 - 4:51where little finger goes down. So
these two are kind of split, -
4:51 - 4:55there's a string in the middle of
them, going right the way through there. -
4:55 - 4:59That's the 7.
-
4:59 - 5:03So they're your 4 types of A
shape barre chord that you want to learn. -
5:03 - 5:09First Major, minor, minor7 and 7.
-
5:09 - 5:18Mastering these 2 shapes, the
E shape and the A shape, -
5:18 - 5:23with the 4 different
chord types of each shape, -
5:23 - 5:25so it's a total of
8 chords that you've got there. -
5:25 - 5:29These form the foundation for
all of your guitar playing, -
5:29 - 5:32that you're probably going to do
for the rest of your life. -
5:32 - 5:35There are 3 other
barre chord shapes, G shape, -
5:35 - 5:38which is really, really, really
difficult, and hardly ever used. -
5:38 - 5:43C shape which is moderately difficult, but
used a little bit, cause it's kinda useful. -
5:43 - 5:47And D shape which is used
in certain parts of that shape. -
5:47 - 5:49But very rarely the whole thing.
-
5:49 - 5:51They're quite difficult and quite advanced.
-
5:51 - 5:53I wouldn't of thought that
you'd probably want to learn those, -
5:53 - 5:55until you'd been playing guitar
for 3 or 4 years. -
5:55 - 5:58And really, really confident with
your guitar playing in general. -
5:58 - 6:02And think most of, excuse me,
your stuff like your Jack Johnson, -
6:02 - 6:04and your Bob Dylan's, whatever
it is, these kind of people, -
6:04 - 6:06if they're playing barre chords,
-
6:06 - 6:09they're definitely going to be
playing E shape and A shape. -
6:09 - 6:12Very rarely will any of
those other shapes get used. -
6:12 - 6:14I'd say there's an
awful lot of really fine, -
6:14 - 6:18fine guitar players that don't
know those other three shapes. -
6:18 - 6:19They're really quite rare.
-
6:19 - 6:21So, the next thing for you
to make sure that you do, -
6:21 - 6:24is really, really
nail these chords properly. -
6:24 - 6:28I highly recommend getting a
book like the Beatles Complete, -
6:28 - 6:30is the one that
I recommend the most strongly. -
6:30 - 6:33Just the Beatles, are
an amazing band, amazing songs, -
6:33 - 6:35and really interesting
chords and chord sequences. -
6:35 - 6:38So, by going through that book, just
open the book to a random song, -
6:38 - 6:40and try and play it, make sure
that you get all of those chords down. -
6:40 - 6:43You might come across the
occasional chord you don't know, -
6:43 - 6:48remembering of course that you can
do what's called boiling down chords. -
6:48 - 6:51Say if you have a G11
you could just play a G7, -
6:51 - 6:58if you have a Gm9 you can play a Gm7
or a Gm even if you boil it down enough. -
6:58 - 7:03So, remember just subtract those notes,
for the time being you could alter, -
7:03 - 7:06if you see an altered chord,
like a dom7#9 or a #5, -
7:06 - 7:08you can just ignore it, and just,
-
7:08 - 7:10knock off any of those
extensions that you don't know. -
7:10 - 7:13The most important bit is
whether it's major and minor, -
7:13 - 7:14and whether it's sharp or flat.
-
7:14 - 7:19Like Gb7 would sound really
horrible if you played G. -
7:19 - 7:23So the # or b is to
do with the pitch not the chord type. -
7:23 - 7:26But the chord type can
be muddled down a little bit. -
7:26 - 7:29There's also for any
of you Jack Johnson fans, -
7:29 - 7:32there's a couple of really, really
good tunes for practicing these chords. -
7:32 - 7:36One I've already got up here
which is Traffic In the Sky, -
7:36 - 7:40beautiful, beautiful song for
learning these barre chord shapes. -
7:40 - 7:43Just cause it, you're picking out
the notes one at a time. -
7:43 - 7:46So you really have to make sure
that you've got your barre chord down, -
7:46 - 7:49like properly. And the other one I
like as well for this is Gone. -
7:49 - 7:52Which is just using E
shape and A shape barre chords, -
7:52 - 7:54with a sweet little picking pattern.
-
7:54 - 7:58I think both of those songs actually
I've put up here on You Tube already. -
7:58 - 8:02So you might want to go and check those
out after you've practiced up your chord a bit. -
8:02 - 8:05Don't jump into it, spend a
bit of time on the chord. -
8:05 - 8:08I recommend again just 5
minutes a day with your timer, -
8:08 - 8:12making sure that you do your
proper concentrating 5 minute timer practice, -
8:12 - 8:17just strum pickout and strum, just like
you should have done with your open chords, -
8:17 - 8:21to make sure every note is
really clear, barre chords are difficult. -
8:21 - 8:25Everybody struggles with them, but once you nail 'em the world is your oyster,
-
8:25 - 8:30as far as songs go because there's
very, very few songs that you can't play, -
8:30 - 8:33with your barre chords so if
you've got your open chords down, -
8:33 - 8:35and your barre chords down you
can play a bit of rhythm guitar, -
8:35 - 8:38you're well on your way.
OK I hope that was helpful. -
8:38 - 8:41Take care of yourselves,
and I'll see you soon. -
8:41 - 8:44Au revoir.
