Talks about TEDx: Lara Stein at TEDxDubai

  • 0:12 - 0:14
    It's really amazing
    to be here.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
I've actually tried to make it
to Dubai the last two years.
  • 0:18 - 0:20
    For one reason or another,
    I just couldn't make it.
  • 0:20 - 0:25
    But, TEDxDubai 2009
    was actually
  • 0:25 - 0:30
one of the very first large scale
TEDx events in the Middle East.
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    What's extraordinary
    about that is
  • 0:34 - 0:38
that you are really the founding members
    of this amazing TEDx community.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    That is a really, pretty
    incredible undertaking.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
TEDx started off as this little experiment
    just over 2 years ago.
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    It has grown beyond any
    of our wildest expectations.
  • 0:52 - 0:56
    We've had
    over almost 2,500 events
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    with another about
    1,200 events planned.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    We have about 106 events
    in the Middle East
  • 1:03 - 1:06
    and we have another
    76 events planned.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    So, for those of you
    that don't know
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    TED started off in 1984,
  • 1:13 - 1:17
at that time is was a small conference
    about 500 people.
  • 1:17 - 1:23
    In around 2002, Chirs Anderson
took it over and he transformed it
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    from a for-proift conference
    into a non-for-profit conference
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    with a mantra of
    "Ideas worth spreading".
  • 1:32 - 1:36
And, in 2007 we put TED talks
    online for free.
  • 1:36 - 1:40
    At that time, it was
    before the proliferation of video.
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    Not a lot of people
    were watching the talks.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
    But we were getting emails
    like this.
  • 1:46 - 1:51
And, this is an email we got
    about Majora Carter's talk.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
Basically, what we understood from this mail
    is that people
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    were connecting to these talks
on a very deep and passionate level.
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    So, we really felt like
we were onto something at that point.
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    Shortly thereafter, we decided that
    we wanted to really take
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    this concept of open source
    to the next level.
  • 2:10 - 2:15
    So, we launched
our Open Translation Program in about 2008.
  • 2:16 - 2:18
So, the combination of putting TED talks
    online for free
  • 2:18 - 2:20
    and Open Translation Program,
  • 2:20 - 2:24
more and more people around the world
were exposed to the TED brand.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
So, people were coming up to us
    and asking us to hold
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    official TED conferences
in their cities and their countries.
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    This idea in itself
    was very hard to scale.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
So, at the time, Chris and I sat down
    to try to figure out
  • 2:35 - 2:38
what we could do to really take
    the TED brand
  • 2:38 - 2:41
and open source it in a way
that we could really give it back
  • 2:41 - 2:43
    to you, the communities
    around the world
  • 2:43 - 2:47
and enable you to really have
a deep dialogue on a local level.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
    So, out of that
    the TEDx program was born.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    So, really TEDx
    is your program.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
It is about creating a safe place
    for you to engage
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    and have
    an intellectual conversation.
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    So, really more so,
I think that anywhere else in the world,
  • 3:01 - 3:06
I am really excited about what this means
within this region of the world.
  • 3:06 - 3:11
I think that TEDx can really create
and there is a huge potential
  • 3:11 - 3:16
for this program to really inspire
and affect change on a local level.
  • 3:18 - 3:20
I think the timing in fact
    couldn't be better.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
So, I just wanted to say
    thank you,
  • 3:22 - 3:25
thank you to all the TEDx organizers
    that made it here today.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
As you can see, it really is
    an incredible group of people
  • 3:28 - 3:34
that work tirelessly, volunteer every day
to bring these kinds of events to you.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    I wanna say thank you,
    especially to Giorgio,
  • 3:36 - 3:39
    and his entire team
for doing this year after year.
  • 3:39 - 3:41
    So, thank you.
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    (Applause)
