Merengue madness | Nina Perez | TEDxStanleyPark

  • 0:16 - 0:18
So I teach connection through dance.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
And today we're going to use
the vehicle merengue to go on a journey,
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    a journey of connection
    with yourself and others -
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    a connection with your body
    and your environment.
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    You know how they say,
  • 0:29 - 0:31
    "How you do one thing
is how you do all things"?
  • 0:31 - 0:35
I want you to pay attention
to how you show up today and see -
  • 0:35 - 0:36
a lot of my students often say
  • 0:36 - 0:39
    that they learn so much
    about themselves through dance.
  • 0:39 - 0:45
So if you're willing and able,
    please stand up, feet together.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    And our first destination
    is going to be within,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
and we're going to listen to the music.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    (Music starts)
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    And there is a rhythm,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
and I want you to start going
with the rhythm, going with the flow -
  • 0:59 - 1:01
we don't want to resist it.
  • 1:01 - 1:02
    So we feel the rhythm.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
I want you to put that energy
    into your heart
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    and start tapping your heart
    when you feel that rhythm.
  • 1:08 - 1:11
Make it loud so your neighbor can hear it.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    Now, what happens
    when we feel something deeply
  • 1:13 - 1:15
is that it starts going down our core
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    and gets us into action.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    And your hips are going
to start moving side to side.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    This is our engine:
    it drives us, our purpose.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    You're never going
    to stop being in action.
  • 1:26 - 1:27
    Very good.
  • 1:27 - 1:30
Some of you didn't even know
    you had those hips, right?
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    We're going to venture
into leaning forward into the future.
  • 1:34 - 1:36
And I want you to think,
    by leaning forward,
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    of what all the possibilities
    and the experiences to come
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    and bring all the excitement
    into the present moment.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
Then we're going to venture into the past
  • 1:45 - 1:48
and reflect on all your past
    experiences and memories
  • 1:48 - 1:51
    and bring all those lessons
    learned into the present.
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    Very nice.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    If any negativity showed up,
just shake it off, up above.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
You shake it off, down below.
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    Shake it off.
  • 2:00 - 2:01
    That's it.
  • 2:01 - 2:03
Then we're going to raise our hands
  • 2:03 - 2:05
    and ground ourselves down.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    One more deep breath,
    and ground yourself.
  • 2:10 - 2:14
And what happens when you ground yourself
    is creativity starts bubbling up,
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    touching your knees,
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    and bring that creativity up,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
    and turn in one direction,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    expressing your creativity
    all the way around.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    Very good.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    And in any journey,
    we have fellow travelers.
  • 2:27 - 2:32
    So high-five your neighbors,
    your friends, people beside you,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    all the people around you.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
    Yes.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
And we're going to probably reach
    an ending or a milestone,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
and we want to celebrate those.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
So raise your hands and say, "Whoo!"
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    Audience: Whoo!
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    Very nice.
  • 2:46 - 2:47
    Okay.
  • 2:47 - 2:50
Like anything we want to master,
we're going to do it again.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
So feet together, we start in the heart.
  • 2:53 - 2:56
And then, move into action, our purpose,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
head to the future, see our vision,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
    and shimmy!
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    And then to the past,
  • 3:02 - 3:05
    and bring all those experiences
    into the present,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    shake off any negativity.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    That's it.
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    And then, breathe and ground
    yourself down into the earth.
  • 3:14 - 3:15
    One more.
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    Then creativity starts
    coming up your knees,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
and turn in one direction or the other,
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    expressing yourself with your creativity.
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    High-five your community,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
    your neighbors, your friends.
  • 3:31 - 3:32
    And then celebrate!
  • 3:32 - 3:33
    Whoo!
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    Audience: Whoo!
  • 3:35 - 3:37
Let's do it one more time
    a little bit faster.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    So heart,
  • 3:39 - 3:40
    purpose,
  • 3:40 - 3:43
    vision of the future,
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    past experience,
  • 3:45 - 3:48
    shake off any negativity,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
    and ground.
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    Again.
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    And creativity bubbles up,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    turn in one direction,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
and on the other direction -
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    turn the other direction,
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    high-five your friends,
  • 4:08 - 4:10
    your community.
  • 4:12 - 4:13
    Very nice,
  • 4:13 - 4:15
    and big celebration!
  • 4:15 - 4:16
    Whoo!
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    Audidence: Whoo!
  • 4:19 - 4:20
    Very good, everybody.
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    So that's our merengue madness.
  • 4:23 - 4:26
    (Applause and cheers)
  • 4:28 - 4:30
And I hope you take brave,
    inspired actions
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    and continue to dance.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    Thank you, everybody.
    Thank you so much.
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    (Applause)
