Merengue madness | Nina Perez | TEDxStanleyPark
-
0:16 - 0:18So I teach connection through dance.
-
0:18 - 0:21And today we're going to use
the vehicle merengue to go on a journey, -
0:21 - 0:24a journey of connection
with yourself and others - -
0:24 - 0:27a connection with your body
and your environment. -
0:28 - 0:29You know how they say,
-
0:29 - 0:31"How you do one thing
is how you do all things"? -
0:31 - 0:35I want you to pay attention
to how you show up today and see - -
0:35 - 0:36a lot of my students often say
-
0:36 - 0:39that they learn so much
about themselves through dance. -
0:39 - 0:45So if you're willing and able,
please stand up, feet together. -
0:48 - 0:50And our first destination
is going to be within, -
0:50 - 0:52and we're going to listen to the music.
-
0:52 - 0:53(Music starts)
-
0:53 - 0:56And there is a rhythm,
-
0:56 - 0:59and I want you to start going
with the rhythm, going with the flow - -
0:59 - 1:01we don't want to resist it.
-
1:01 - 1:02So we feel the rhythm.
-
1:02 - 1:05I want you to put that energy
into your heart -
1:05 - 1:08and start tapping your heart
when you feel that rhythm. -
1:08 - 1:11Make it loud so your neighbor can hear it.
-
1:11 - 1:13Now, what happens
when we feel something deeply -
1:13 - 1:15is that it starts going down our core
-
1:15 - 1:17and gets us into action.
-
1:17 - 1:21And your hips are going
to start moving side to side. -
1:21 - 1:24This is our engine:
it drives us, our purpose. -
1:24 - 1:26You're never going
to stop being in action. -
1:26 - 1:27Very good.
-
1:27 - 1:30Some of you didn't even know
you had those hips, right? -
1:30 - 1:34We're going to venture
into leaning forward into the future. -
1:34 - 1:36And I want you to think,
by leaning forward, -
1:36 - 1:39of what all the possibilities
and the experiences to come -
1:39 - 1:42and bring all the excitement
into the present moment. -
1:43 - 1:45Then we're going to venture into the past
-
1:45 - 1:48and reflect on all your past
experiences and memories -
1:48 - 1:51and bring all those lessons
learned into the present. -
1:51 - 1:52Very nice.
-
1:52 - 1:56If any negativity showed up,
just shake it off, up above. -
1:56 - 1:58You shake it off, down below.
-
1:58 - 2:00Shake it off.
-
2:00 - 2:01That's it.
-
2:01 - 2:03Then we're going to raise our hands
-
2:03 - 2:05and ground ourselves down.
-
2:06 - 2:09One more deep breath,
and ground yourself. -
2:10 - 2:14And what happens when you ground yourself
is creativity starts bubbling up, -
2:14 - 2:15touching your knees,
-
2:15 - 2:17and bring that creativity up,
-
2:17 - 2:19and turn in one direction,
-
2:19 - 2:22expressing your creativity
all the way around. -
2:22 - 2:24Very good.
-
2:25 - 2:27And in any journey,
we have fellow travelers. -
2:27 - 2:32So high-five your neighbors,
your friends, people beside you, -
2:32 - 2:34all the people around you.
-
2:34 - 2:35Yes.
-
2:35 - 2:38And we're going to probably reach
an ending or a milestone, -
2:38 - 2:40and we want to celebrate those.
-
2:40 - 2:43So raise your hands and say, "Whoo!"
-
2:43 - 2:44Audience: Whoo!
-
2:44 - 2:46Very nice.
-
2:46 - 2:47Okay.
-
2:47 - 2:50Like anything we want to master,
we're going to do it again. -
2:50 - 2:53So feet together, we start in the heart.
-
2:53 - 2:56And then, move into action, our purpose,
-
2:56 - 2:58head to the future, see our vision,
-
2:58 - 3:00and shimmy!
-
3:00 - 3:02And then to the past,
-
3:02 - 3:05and bring all those experiences
into the present, -
3:05 - 3:07shake off any negativity.
-
3:07 - 3:09That's it.
-
3:09 - 3:13And then, breathe and ground
yourself down into the earth. -
3:14 - 3:15One more.
-
3:16 - 3:19Then creativity starts
coming up your knees, -
3:19 - 3:22and turn in one direction or the other,
-
3:23 - 3:26expressing yourself with your creativity.
-
3:26 - 3:28High-five your community,
-
3:28 - 3:31your neighbors, your friends.
-
3:31 - 3:32And then celebrate!
-
3:32 - 3:33Whoo!
-
3:33 - 3:35Audience: Whoo!
-
3:35 - 3:37Let's do it one more time
a little bit faster. -
3:37 - 3:39So heart,
-
3:39 - 3:40purpose,
-
3:40 - 3:43vision of the future,
-
3:43 - 3:45past experience,
-
3:45 - 3:48shake off any negativity,
-
3:48 - 3:50and ground.
-
3:51 - 3:52Again.
-
3:54 - 3:56And creativity bubbles up,
-
3:57 - 3:59turn in one direction,
-
4:01 - 4:03and on the other direction -
-
4:03 - 4:05turn the other direction,
-
4:06 - 4:08high-five your friends,
-
4:08 - 4:10your community.
-
4:12 - 4:13Very nice,
-
4:13 - 4:15and big celebration!
-
4:15 - 4:16Whoo!
-
4:16 - 4:18Audidence: Whoo!
-
4:19 - 4:20Very good, everybody.
-
4:20 - 4:23So that's our merengue madness.
-
4:23 - 4:26(Applause and cheers)
-
4:28 - 4:30And I hope you take brave,
inspired actions -
4:30 - 4:32and continue to dance.
-
4:32 - 4:34Thank you, everybody.
Thank you so much. -
4:34 - 4:36(Applause)
