This is Not a Conspiracy Theory (Part 1)
-
0:01 - 0:05Hi there, my name’s Kirby Ferguson. I am the creator of This is Not a Conspiracy Theory.
-
0:05 - 0:11Stay tuned to the end of this video for further information about how this series works and how you can subscribe.
-
0:11 - 0:13Alright. Here were go.
-
0:15 - 0:17The people of the internet present
-
0:18 - 0:21A documentary feature delivered in episodes
-
0:26 - 0:28November 1963.
-
0:28 - 0:30An assassination.
-
0:30 - 0:33Not the assassination of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy,
-
0:33 - 0:37but that of his assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.
-
0:37 - 0:43It was this killing that permanently sealed JFK’s murder in mystery.
-
0:45 - 0:50The conclusion of the official government investigation was simple yet unsatisfying:
-
0:51 - 0:57a disaffected loner with a cheap rifle killed the president... by himself.
-
0:57 - 0:59Counter narratives started to appear.
-
0:59 - 1:05Amateur sleuths tried to follow the trajectories of the bullets backwards, into the shadows.
-
1:06 - 1:10Their methods were a combination of lawyer, detective and outsider.
-
1:14 - 1:20This style of reasoning became known as the conspiracy theory.
-
1:21 - 1:26Trust in government plummeted during the years of scandal and upheaval that followed.
-
1:26 - 1:32Finally, the president himself was implicated in a spying scandal and the fears of conspiracy thinkers seemed confirmed.
-
1:32 - 1:34Conspiracies were real.
-
1:35 - 1:41But the research into the Kennedy assassination was failing to develop a convincing alternative scenario.
-
1:41 - 1:47Instead, it had splintered into countless, conflicting variations.
-
1:48 - 1:53And on the outskirts of popular culture, new and more outrageous ideas were developing.
-
1:55 - 1:58The flaws of the conspiracy theory were becoming obvious.
-
1:58 - 2:01And its logic could lead to preposterous conclusions.
-
2:01 - 2:05According to the stories the US government is concealing under top security
-
2:05 - 2:08flying saucers from another world
-
2:08 - 2:12and alien bodies, cryogenically suspended in huge freezers.
-
2:12 - 2:15The term conspiracy was soon an insult.
-
2:15 - 2:18Why the fuck does everything have to be a conspiracy, huh?
-
2:18 - 2:21And yet the conspiracy theory would continue to grow.
-
2:21 - 2:24Its influence absorbed into popular culture.
-
2:24 - 2:30It blurred into the realm of science fiction as claims of alien abductions and cover-ups multiplied.
-
2:30 - 2:33This happened. If you believe it, that’s alright.
-
2:33 - 2:36If you don’t believe it, I don’t care.
-
2:36 - 2:39The TV series The X Files channeled all these themes of paranoia
-
2:39 - 2:43and beamed them into American living rooms every Sunday evening.
-
2:43 - 2:48While Oliver Stone’s film JFK brought the Kennedy conspiracy theory back into the mainstream.
-
2:48 - 2:52Now we’re through the looking glass here people.
-
2:52 - 2:54White is black.
-
2:54 - 2:56And black is white.
-
2:58 - 3:01But it was a new form of media, the World Wide Web,
-
3:01 - 3:05that brought the conspiracy theory to its widest audience ever.
-
3:05 - 3:13And after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the conspiracy theory became an online sensation
-
3:13 - 3:18and it’s maintained a conspicuous presence in online culture ever since.
-
3:19 - 3:24By 2013, we'd entered a new era of suspicion and paranoia.
-
3:24 - 3:28Trust in government hovered at levels even lower than the Nixon era.
-
3:28 - 3:33Despite their persistently poor reputation, belief in conspiracy theories flourished.
-
3:33 - 3:40“Sixty-three percent of registered voters believe at least one political conspiracy theory...” Conspiracy Theories Prosper, Dan Cassino and Krista Jenkins
-
3:42 - 3:48The conspiracy theory is something more than just paranoia from the fringes of society.
-
3:48 - 3:52It's a dramatic expression of a uniquely modern anxiety:
-
3:55 - 4:01the sensation that you are trapped within the invisible design of a greater power.
-
4:01 - 4:04What you know you can’t explain.
-
4:04 - 4:05But it's there.
-
4:05 - 4:08like a splinter in your mind.
-
4:10 - 4:13In the United States in particular these fears have deep roots,
-
4:13 - 4:17roots that tangle down into the core of the American identity and beyond.
-
4:17 - 4:20Back through the centuries, past America’s formation
-
4:20 - 4:24and right down to the bedrock psychology of the conspiracy theory:
-
4:24 - 4:30the projection of human intentions upon complex events.
-
4:32 - 4:37The ancient Greeks once saw lightning bolts and imagined the fury of Zeus.
-
4:37 - 4:40But we later developed better understanding of the forces of nature,
-
4:40 - 4:45and we are now beginning to understand the complexity behind our own society.
-
4:45 - 4:49We are confronting powers more daunting than a shadowy elite,
-
4:49 - 4:53powers that we struggle to comprehend with the minds we’ve evolved.
-
4:53 - 4:54You don’t get it.
-
4:54 - 4:58Then help me. Please, I need to know.
-
4:58 - 5:02This may be hard for you to understand, but there is no conspiracy.
-
5:02 - 5:04Nobody is in charge.
-
5:05 - 5:09What we are now realizing is that we are guided, constrained,
-
5:09 - 5:11and even controlled by the systems we have made,
-
5:11 - 5:17by the rules, institutions and technologies we ourselves created.
-
5:17 - 5:19And these systems have no ideology,
-
5:19 - 5:22they have no ambition, they are not greedy,
-
5:22 - 5:25they are not good and they are not evil.
-
5:25 - 5:30They are simply not like us.
-
5:32 - 5:37This is Not a Conspiracy Theory
-
