Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model.
-
0:00 - 0:03Hi. My name is Cameron Russell,
-
0:03 - 0:09and for the last little while,
I've been a model. -
0:09 - 0:11Actually, for 10 years.
-
0:13 - 0:15And I feel like
-
0:15 - 0:18there's an uncomfortable tension
in the room right now -
0:18 - 0:20because I should not have worn this dress.
-
0:20 - 0:22(Laughter)
-
0:22 - 0:24So luckily, I brought an outfit change.
-
0:24 - 0:28This is the first outfit change
on the TED stage, -
0:28 - 0:31so you guys are pretty lucky
to witness it, I think. -
0:31 - 0:34If some of the women were
really horrified when I came out, -
0:34 - 0:37you don't have to tell me now,
but I'll find out later on Twitter. -
0:37 - 0:40(Laughter)
-
0:42 - 0:44I'd also note that I'm quite privileged
-
0:44 - 0:47to be able to transform
what you think of me -
0:47 - 0:50in a very brief 10 seconds.
-
0:50 - 0:52Not everybody gets to do that.
-
0:53 - 0:57These heels are very uncomfortable,
so good thing I wasn't going to wear them. -
0:59 - 1:02The worst part is putting
this sweater over my head, -
1:02 - 1:04because that's when
you'll all laugh at me, -
1:04 - 1:06so don't do anything
while it's over my head. -
1:08 - 1:09All right.
-
1:11 - 1:14So, why did I do that?
-
1:14 - 1:15That was awkward.
-
1:15 - 1:17(Laughter)
-
1:17 - 1:18Well...
-
1:18 - 1:20(Laughter)
-
1:20 - 1:24Hopefully not as awkward as that picture.
-
1:25 - 1:28Image is powerful,
-
1:28 - 1:31but also, image is superficial.
-
1:33 - 1:37I just totally transformed
what you thought of me, in six seconds. -
1:37 - 1:39And in this picture,
-
1:39 - 1:42I had actually never had
a boyfriend in real life. -
1:43 - 1:44I was totally uncomfortable,
-
1:44 - 1:47and the photographer
was telling me to arch my back -
1:47 - 1:49and put my hand in that guy's hair.
-
1:51 - 1:53And of course, barring surgery,
-
1:53 - 1:56or the fake tan that I got
two days ago for work, -
1:56 - 2:00there's very little that we can do
to transform how we look, -
2:00 - 2:04and how we look, though it is
superficial and immutable, -
2:04 - 2:06has a huge impact on our lives.
-
2:08 - 2:13So today, for me, being
fearless means being honest. -
2:13 - 2:16And I am on this stage
because I am a model. -
2:16 - 2:19I am on this stage because
I am a pretty, white woman, -
2:19 - 2:22and in my industry,
we call that a sexy girl. -
2:22 - 2:25I'm going to answer the questions
that people always ask me, -
2:25 - 2:26but with an honest twist.
-
2:26 - 2:29So the first question is,
how do you become a model? -
2:29 - 2:31I always just say, "Oh, I was scouted,"
-
2:31 - 2:32but that means nothing.
-
2:32 - 2:35The real way that I became a model
-
2:35 - 2:39is I won a genetic lottery,
and I am the recipient of a legacy, -
2:39 - 2:41and maybe you're wondering
what is a legacy. -
2:41 - 2:44Well, for the past few centuries
-
2:44 - 2:49we have defined beauty
not just as health and youth -
2:49 - 2:53and symmetry that we're biologically
programmed to admire, -
2:53 - 2:57but also as tall, slender figures,
-
2:57 - 3:00and femininity and white skin.
-
3:00 - 3:02And this is a legacy
that was built for me, -
3:02 - 3:04and it's a legacy
that I've been cashing out on. -
3:04 - 3:06And I know there are
people in the audience -
3:06 - 3:08who are skeptical at this point,
-
3:08 - 3:11and maybe there are
some fashionistas who are like, -
3:11 - 3:13"Wait. Naomi. Tyra. Joan Smalls. Liu Wen."
-
3:13 - 3:16And first, I commend you on your model
knowledge. Very impressive. -
3:16 - 3:18(Laughter)
-
3:18 - 3:22But unfortunately,
I have to inform you that in 2007, -
3:22 - 3:24a very inspired NYU Ph.D. student
-
3:24 - 3:28counted all the models on the runway,
every single one that was hired, -
3:28 - 3:31and of the 677 models that were hired,
-
3:31 - 3:34only 27, or less than four percent,
were non-white. -
3:36 - 3:38The next question people always ask is,
-
3:38 - 3:39"Can I be a model when I grow up?"
-
3:39 - 3:43And the first answer is, "I don't know,
they don't put me in charge of that." -
3:43 - 3:44But the second answer,
-
3:44 - 3:47and what I really want to say
to these little girls is, -
3:47 - 3:49"Why? You know? You can be anything.
-
3:49 - 3:51You could be the President
of the United States, -
3:51 - 3:53or the inventor of the next Internet,
-
3:53 - 3:55or a ninja cardiothoracic surgeon poet,
-
3:55 - 3:58which would be awesome,
because you'd be the first one." -
3:58 - 4:00(Laughter)
-
4:00 - 4:02If, after this amazing list,
they still are like, -
4:02 - 4:04"No, no, Cameron, I want to be a model,"
-
4:04 - 4:06well, then I say, "Be my boss."
-
4:06 - 4:08Because I'm not in charge of anything,
-
4:08 - 4:10and you could be the editor in chief
of American Vogue -
4:10 - 4:13or the CEO of H&M,
or the next Steven Meisel. -
4:13 - 4:15Saying that you want to be
a model when you grow up -
4:15 - 4:19is akin to saying that you want to win
the Powerball when you grow up. -
4:19 - 4:22It's out of your control,
and it's awesome, -
4:22 - 4:24and it's not a career path.
-
4:24 - 4:28I will demonstrate for you now
10 years of accumulated model knowledge, -
4:28 - 4:30because unlike cardiothoracic surgeons,
-
4:30 - 4:33it can just be distilled right now.
-
4:33 - 4:36So, if the photographer is right there,
-
4:36 - 4:38the light is right there, like a nice HMI,
-
4:38 - 4:40and the client says,
"We want a walking shot," -
4:40 - 4:44this leg goes first, nice and long,
this arm goes back, this arm goes forward, -
4:44 - 4:47the head is at three quarters,
and you just go back and forth, -
4:47 - 4:50just do that, and then you look back
at your imaginary friends, -
4:50 - 4:52300, 400, 500 times.
-
4:52 - 4:53(Laughter)
-
4:53 - 4:55It will look something like this.
-
4:55 - 4:57(Laughter)
-
4:57 - 5:00Hopefully less awkward
than that one in the middle. -
5:00 - 5:03That was... I don't know
what happened there. -
5:03 - 5:05Unfortunately,
after you've gone to school, -
5:05 - 5:07and you have a résumé
and you've done a few jobs, -
5:07 - 5:09you can't say anything anymore,
-
5:09 - 5:12so if you say you want to be
the President of the United States, -
5:12 - 5:14but your résumé reads,
"Underwear Model: 10 years," -
5:14 - 5:16people give you a funny look.
-
5:16 - 5:18The next question is,
"Do they retouch all the photos?" -
5:19 - 5:21And yeah, they pretty much
retouch all the photos, -
5:21 - 5:24but that is only a small component
of what's happening. -
5:24 - 5:27This picture is the very first
picture that I ever took, -
5:27 - 5:30and it's also the very first time
that I had worn a bikini, -
5:30 - 5:31and I didn't even have my period yet.
-
5:31 - 5:35I know we're getting personal,
but I was a young girl. -
5:35 - 5:38This is what I looked like with my grandma
just a few months earlier. -
5:39 - 5:41Here's me on the same day as this shoot.
-
5:41 - 5:43My friend got to come.
-
5:43 - 5:46Here's me at a slumber party
a few days before I shot French Vogue. -
5:47 - 5:49Here's me on the soccer team
and in V Magazine. -
5:51 - 5:52And here's me today.
-
5:52 - 5:54And I hope what you're seeing
-
5:54 - 5:56is that these pictures
are not pictures of me. -
5:57 - 5:58They are constructions,
-
5:58 - 6:01and they are constructions
by a group of professionals, -
6:01 - 6:04by hairstylists and makeup artists
and photographers and stylists -
6:04 - 6:07and all of their assistants
and pre-production and post-production, -
6:07 - 6:08and they build this.
-
6:08 - 6:09That's not me.
-
6:09 - 6:12Okay, so the next question
people always ask me is, -
6:12 - 6:13"Do you get free stuff?"
-
6:13 - 6:14(Laughter)
-
6:14 - 6:17I do have too many 8-inch heels
which I never get to wear, -
6:17 - 6:19except for earlier,
-
6:19 - 6:23but the free stuff that I get
is the free stuff that I get in real life, -
6:23 - 6:25and that's what we don't like
to talk about. -
6:25 - 6:26I grew up in Cambridge,
-
6:26 - 6:29and one time I went into a store
and I forgot my money -
6:29 - 6:31and they gave me the dress for free.
-
6:31 - 6:33When I was a teenager,
I was driving with my friend -
6:33 - 6:36who was an awful driver
and she ran a red and of course, -
6:36 - 6:37we got pulled over,
-
6:37 - 6:41and all it took was a "Sorry, officer,"
and we were on our way. -
6:42 - 6:46And I got these free things
because of how I look, -
6:46 - 6:48not who I am, and there are
people paying a cost -
6:48 - 6:51for how they look and not who they are.
-
6:51 - 6:52I live in New York, and last year,
-
6:52 - 6:56of the 140,000 teenagers
that were stopped and frisked, -
6:56 - 7:0086% of them were black and Latino,
and most of them were young men. -
7:00 - 7:05And there are only 177,000
young black and Latino men in New York, -
7:05 - 7:07so for them, it's not a question
of, "Will I get stopped?" -
7:07 - 7:10but "How many times will I get stopped?
When will I get stopped?" -
7:10 - 7:12When I was researching this talk,
-
7:12 - 7:15I found out that of the 13-year-old girls
in the United States, -
7:15 - 7:1853% don't like their bodies,
-
7:18 - 7:21and that number goes to 78%
by the time that they're 17. -
7:22 - 7:25So the last question people ask me is,
-
7:25 - 7:27"What is it like to be a model?"
-
7:27 - 7:29And I think the answer
that they're looking for is, -
7:29 - 7:32"If you are a little bit skinnier
and you have shinier hair, -
7:32 - 7:35you will be so happy and fabulous."
-
7:35 - 7:36And when we're backstage,
-
7:36 - 7:39we give an answer
that maybe makes it seem like that. -
7:39 - 7:42We say, "It's really amazing to travel,
and it's amazing to get to work -
7:42 - 7:45with creative, inspired,
passionate people." -
7:45 - 7:48And those things are true,
but they're only one half of the story, -
7:48 - 7:51because the thing
that we never say on camera, -
7:51 - 7:53that I have never said on camera, is,
-
7:53 - 7:54"I am insecure."
-
7:55 - 7:59And I'm insecure because I have to think
about what I look like every day. -
8:01 - 8:04And if you ever are wondering,
-
8:04 - 8:08"If I have thinner thighs
and shinier hair, will I be happier?" -
8:08 - 8:09you just need to meet a group of models,
-
8:09 - 8:13because they have the thinnest thighs,
the shiniest hair and the coolest clothes, -
8:13 - 8:17and they're the most physically
insecure women probably on the planet. -
8:17 - 8:18When I was writing this talk,
-
8:18 - 8:21I found it very difficult
to strike an honest balance, -
8:21 - 8:23because on the one hand,
-
8:23 - 8:25I felt very uncomfortable
to come out here and say, -
8:25 - 8:29"Look I've received all these benefits
from a deck stacked in my favor," -
8:29 - 8:32and it also felt really uncomfortable
to follow that up with, -
8:32 - 8:34"and it doesn't always make me happy."
-
8:34 - 8:40But mostly it was difficult to unpack
a legacy of gender and racial oppression -
8:40 - 8:42when I am one
of the biggest beneficiaries. -
8:44 - 8:46But I'm also happy
and honored to be up here -
8:46 - 8:50and I think that it's great
that I got to come -
8:50 - 8:53before 10 or 20 or 30 years had passed
and I'd had more agency in my career, -
8:53 - 8:57because maybe then I wouldn't tell
the story of how I got my first job, -
8:57 - 9:00or maybe I wouldn't tell the story
of how I paid for college, -
9:00 - 9:01which seems so important right now.
-
9:02 - 9:04If there's a takeaway to this talk,
-
9:04 - 9:08I hope it's that we all feel
more comfortable acknowledging -
9:08 - 9:12the power of image
in our perceived successes -
9:12 - 9:13and our perceived failures.
-
9:13 - 9:15Thank you.
-
9:15 - 9:17(Applause)
