WIKITONGUES: Lene+Børre speaking Northern Sami

  • 0:00 - 0:03
There are many Sami languages, and not
  • 0:03 - 0:05
all Sámi languages have equally good
  • 0:05 - 0:07
prospects for the future. But I am
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    quite optimistic for Northern Sámi
  • 0:09 - 0:12
which is the largest Sámi language.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
For some Sámi languages, there is
  • 0:14 - 0:16
commitment. As in the case of
  • 0:16 - 0:19
Inari Sámi, the number of speakers
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    is increasing year by year.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
But generally, it is difficult for
  • 0:24 - 0:26
    the small Sámi languages.
  • 0:26 - 0:29
Especially for Southern Sámi there is
  • 0:29 - 0:31
hope because there are avid language
  • 0:31 - 0:34
    users, and language revitalization
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    has spread widely.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
But it is very important that children
  • 0:38 - 0:41
learn Sámi at home, and that parents
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    speak Sámi to their children.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
Otherwise, it will not be enough.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
It is the foundation of language.
  • 0:49 - 0:51
In the Sámi community, there must
  • 0:51 - 0:54
be interest in using the language,
  • 0:54 - 0:56
and also to develop the language for the
  • 0:56 - 1:00
    future. Language technology, which we
  • 1:00 - 1:03
are developing, is part of the
  • 1:03 - 1:06
revitalization and is helpful, but it
  • 1:06 - 1:10
is not the only way to develop
  • 1:10 - 1:13
    the language. Still it
  • 1:13 - 1:17
allows people to use the language
  • 1:17 - 1:24
on their mobile phone when sending SMS,
  • 1:24 - 1:30
when they're chatting and using Facebook.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
It is very important to use Sámi on social
  • 1:34 - 1:39
media as well. It is a part of our
  • 1:40 - 1:45
everyday life. Not all Sámi lives in
  • 1:45 - 1:51
    rural areas, not everyone has
  • 1:51 - 1:55
    close contact with parents
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    and grandparents. They have moved,
  • 1:59 - 2:03
they live in cities and communicates
  • 2:03 - 2:07
in the same way as other youth and
  • 2:07 - 2:09
other people and uses all types of media.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
It is important that also the Sámi
  • 2:12 - 2:14
language works and exists in these media.
  • 2:14 - 2:17
Divvun makes tools that people use daily,
  • 2:17 - 2:19
and we hope that they will be useful to
  • 2:20 - 2:25
anyone who speaks and writes Sámi
  • 2:25 - 2:29
We will develop our tools according
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    to their needs.
  • 2:32 - 2:36
I work for Giellatekno, and we both work
  • 2:36 - 2:40
    at the University of Tromsø.
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    We have common basic resources
  • 2:43 - 2:45
    and the linguistic part.
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    I have a regular university position;
  • 2:49 - 2:53
I teach Sámi and do research in languages
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    and in the language technology
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    possibilities for the language.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
Divvun has a mission from the government,
  • 3:05 - 3:09
because they are to serve especially Sámi
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    languages in Norway. Giellatekno can
  • 3:13 - 3:16
cooperate more with people in other
  • 3:16 - 3:19
countries and with Sámi all over Sápmi.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
Importantly, all of our work is open
  • 3:22 - 3:25
source. If others want to use our
  • 3:25 - 3:28
resources, then they have both the
  • 3:28 - 3:31
opportunity and the right to do so.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
In commercial contexts also. It would
  • 3:34 - 3:38
be very good if someone takes our
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    resources and makes commercial products
  • 3:41 - 3:43
    with language technology.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
And if they can profit from it,
  • 3:47 - 3:53
nothing would be better than that.
