release from Sunsoft.

Actually, uh, one of two releases this
episode (and two more next episode -

they;'re really cranking 'em out!

Sunsoft definitely has some
quality issues with their releases
60:55 - 60:58

but this particular title is
a little different than most.
60:58 - 61:03

Merchen Veil is a port of the 1985
PC-88 game from System Seicom
61:03 - 61:07

(a game company not really known for
quality releases - at least at this point).
61:07 - 61:11

They will eventually release some games
for the FamiCom, themselves, later on.
61:11 - 61:15

Now, Merchen Veil apparently is
somewhat well remembered by some
61:15 - 61:19

Japanese gamers as being an early R.P.G.
with a somewhat well-delineated plot.
61:19 - 61:24

The story is told as a series of text
and image tableaus (as we see here)
61:24 - 61:25

at the beginning of each level
61:25 - 61:30

and they're labeled "visual stages"
for some strange reason.
61:31 - 61:33

Now, oddly the game's title is given as
both the nonsensical "Marchen Veil"
61:33 - 61:37

and "Merchen Veil" on different screens.
61:38 - 61:42

"Merchen" is German for "fairy tale",
but what a "merchen veil" is,

I have absolutely no idea.

The original PC-88 version was apparently
thought to have unusually well-done,

for the time, but there's certainly nothing
well done about the art in this version.

"Merchen Veil" is usually classified by
Japanese gamers as an Action-R.P.G.,
61:57 - 62:01

but... in reality it is merely a
pre-Zelda Action-Adventure game

with some fantasy elements thrown in
62:03 - 62:06

(kinda' similar to Hudson's
"Challenger" game, also from 1985,

(which we saw back in
Chrontendo Episode 5)

Now, this FamiCom version (which was
perhaps ported by Sunsoft, themselves)

suffers from kinda' choppy scrolling
and, uh, character movement.

Honestly, you would think that by 1987
developers would have mastered the
62:23 - 62:26

technical skills required for
smooth scrolling on the FamiCom
62:26 - 62:30

but apparently Sunsoft had not.
62:30 - 62:33

Interestingly, there was a "Merchen Veil 2"
but it was never ported to the FamiCom,
62:33 - 62:36

(unless this version actually
contains both parts).
62:36 - 62:41

So, Merchen Veil is a bit of a mess but
still sort of a fascinating-looking title.

It certainly might be worth a closer look
if anyone ever decides to translate it.
