10 ways to have a better conversation

    a show of hands:

    how many of you have
    unfriended someone on Facebook

    because they said something offensive
    about politics or religion,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    childcare, food?
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    (Laughter)
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    And how many of you know
    at least one person that you avoid
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    because you just don't want
    to talk to them.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    (Laughter)
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    You know, it used to be that in order
    to have a polite conversation,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    we just had to follow the advice
    of Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady:"
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    stick to the weather and your health.
  • 0:28 - 0:33
    But these days, with climate change
    and anti-vaxxing, those subjects --
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    (Laughter) -- are not safe either.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
    So this world that we live in,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    this world in which every conversation
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    has the potential to devolve
    into an argument,
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    where our politicians
    can't speak to one another,
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    and where even the most trivial of issues
  • 0:48 - 0:53
    have someone fighting both passionately
    for it and against it, it's not normal.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    Pew Research did a study
    of 10,000 American adults,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    and they found that at this moment,
    we are more polarized,
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    we are more divided,
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    than we ever have been in history.
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    We're less likely to compromise, which
    means we're not listening to each other.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    And we make decisions about where to live,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    who to marry, and even
    who our friends are going to be,
  • 1:12 - 1:14
    based on what we already believe.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    Again, that means
    we're not listening to each other.
  • 1:17 - 1:21
    A conversation requires a balance
    between talking and listening,
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    and somewhere along the way,
    we lost that balance.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    Now, part of that is due to technology.
  • 1:25 - 1:27
    The smartphones that you all
    either have in your hands
  • 1:27 - 1:30
    or close enough that you could
    grab them really quickly.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
    According to Pew Research,
    about a third of American teenagers
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    send more than a hundred texts a day.
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    And many of them, almost most of them,
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    are more likely to text their friends
    than they are to talk to them
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    face to face.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    There's this great piece in The Atlantic.
  • 1:46 - 1:48
    It was written by a high school teacher
    named Paul Barnwell.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    And he gave his kids
    a communication project.
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    He wanted to teach them how to speak
    on a specific subject without using notes.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    And he said this:
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    "I came to realize" --
  • 1:57 - 1:59
    (Laughter) --
  • 1:59 - 2:04
    "I came to realize
    that conversational competence
  • 2:04 - 2:08
    might be the single most overlooked skill
    we fail to teach.
  • 2:08 - 2:12
    Kids spend hours each day engaging
    with ideas and each other through screens,
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    but rarely do they have
    an opportunity to hone
  • 2:14 - 2:16
    their interpersonal communications skills.
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    It might sound like a funny question,
    but we have to ask ourselves:
  • 2:19 - 2:23
    is there any 21st-century skill
    more important than being able
  • 2:23 - 2:27
    to sustain coherent,
    confident conversation?"
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Now, I make my living talkIng to people:
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    Nobel Prize winners, truck drivers,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    billionaires, kindergarten teachers,
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    heads of state, plumbers.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    I talk to people that I like.
    I talk to people that I don't like.
  • 2:40 - 2:44
    I talk to some people that I disagree with
    deeply on a personal level.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    But I still have a great
    conversation with them.
  • 2:46 - 2:50
    So I'd like to send the next 10 minutes
    or so teaching you how to talk
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    and how to listen.
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    Many of you have already heard
    a lot of advice on this,
  • 2:56 - 2:58
    things like look the person in the eye,
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    think of interesting topics
    to discuss in advance,
  • 3:01 - 3:06
    look, nod, and smile to show
    that you're paying attention,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
    repeat back what you just heard
    or summarize it.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    So I want you to forget all of that.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    It is crap.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    (Laughter)
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    There is no reason to learn
    how to show you're paying attention
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    if you are in fact
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    paying attention.
  • 3:23 - 3:26

    Now, I actually use the exact
    same skills as a professional interviewer
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    that I do in regular life.
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    So, I'm going to teach you
    how to interview people,
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    and that's actually going to help you
    learn how to be better conversationalists.
  • 3:42 - 3:43
    Learn to have a conversation
  • 3:43 - 3:45
    without wasting your time,
    without getting bored,
  • 3:45 - 3:49
    and, please God,
    without offending anybody.
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    We've all had really great conversations.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    We've had them before.
    We know what it's like,
  • 3:53 - 3:57
    the kind of conversation where you
    walk away feeling engaged and inspired,
  • 3:57 - 3:59
    or where you feel like you've made
    a real connection
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    or you've been perfectly understood.
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    There is no reason why
    most of your interactions
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    can't be like that.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    So I have 10 basic rules.
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    I'm going to walk you through all of them,
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    but honestly, if you just choose
    one of them and master it,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    you'll already enjoy better conversations.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
    Number one: don't multitask.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    And I don't mean just set down
    your cell phone
  • 4:20 - 4:23
    or your tablet or your car keys
    or whatever is in your hand.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
    I mean, be present.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    Be in that moment.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    Don't be thinking about your argument
    that you had with your boss.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    Don't be thinking about
    what you're going to have for dinner.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
    If you want to get out
    of the conversation,
  • 4:34 - 4:36
    get out of the conversation,
  • 4:36 - 4:39
    but don't be half in it
    and half out of it.
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    Number two: don't pontificate.
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    If you want to just state your opinion
  • 4:43 - 4:49
    without any opportunity for response
    or argument or pushback or growth,
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    write a blog.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
    (Laughter)
  • 4:54 - 4:57
    Now, there's a really good reason
    why I don't allow pundits on my show:
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    because they're really boring.
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    If they're conservative, they're going to
    hate Obama and food stamps and abortion.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    If they're liberal, they're going to hate
    big banks and oil corporations
  • 5:06 - 5:07
    and Dick Cheney.
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    Totally predictable.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    And you don't want to be like that.
  • 5:10 - 5:15
    You need to enter every conversation
    assuming that you have something to learn.
  • 5:15 - 5:19
    The famed therapist M. Scott Peck said
    that true listening requires
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    a setting aside of oneself,
  • 5:22 - 5:26
    and sometimes that means
    setting aside your personal opinion.
  • 5:26 - 5:29
    He said that sensing this acceptance,
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    the speaker will become
    less and less vulnerable
  • 5:32 - 5:35
    and more and more likely
    to open up the inner recesses
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    of his or her mind to the listener.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    Again, assume that you have
    something to learn.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
    Bill Nye: "Everyone you will ever meet
    knows something that you don't."
  • 5:45 - 5:47
    I put it this way:
  • 5:47 - 5:51
    everybody is an expert in something.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    Number three: use open-ended questions.
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    In this case, take a cue from journalists.
  • 5:56 - 5:59
    Start your questions with who, what,
    when, where, why, or how.
  • 5:59 - 6:03
    If you put in a complicated question,
    you're going to get a simple answer out.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    If I ask you, "Were you terrified?"
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    you're going to respond to
    the most powerful word in that sentence,
  • 6:08 - 6:11
    which is "terrified," and the answer is
    "Yes I was" or "No I wasn't."
  • 6:11 - 6:14
    "Were you angry?"
    "Yes, I was very angry."
  • 6:14 - 6:17
    Let them describe it.
    They're the ones that know.
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    Try asking them things like,
    "What was that like?"
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    "How did that feel?"
  • 6:22 - 6:26
    Because then they might have to stop
    for a moment and think about it,
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    and you're going to get
    a much more interesting response.
  • 6:29 - 6:32
    Number four: go with the flow.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
    That means thoughts
    will come into your mind
  • 6:35 - 6:37
    and you need to let them
    go out of your mind.
  • 6:37 - 6:41
    We've heard interviews often
    in which a guest is talking
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    for several minutes and then the host
    comes back in and asks a question
  • 6:44 - 6:48
    which seems like it comes out of nowhere,
    or it's already been answered.
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    That means the host probably
    stopped listening two minutes ago
  • 6:51 - 6:54
    because he thought
    of this really clever question
  • 6:54 - 6:58
    and he was just bound
    and determined to say that.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
    And we do the exact same thing.
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    We're sitting there having
    a conversation with someone,
  • 7:01 - 7:05
    and then we remember that time
    that we met Hugh Jackman in a coffee shop.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
    (Laughter)
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    And we stop listening.
  • 7:09 - 7:11
    Stories and ideas
    are going to come to you.
  • 7:11 - 7:14
    You need to let them come and let them go.
  • 7:14 - 7:18
    Number five: if you don't know,
    say that you don't know.
  • 7:18 - 7:21
    Now, people on the radio,
    especially on NPR,
  • 7:21 - 7:24
    are much more aware
    that they're going on the record,
  • 7:24 - 7:28
    and so they're more careful
    about what they claim to be an expert in
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    and what they claim to know for sure.
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    Do that. Err on the side of caution.
  • 7:32 - 7:35
    Talk should not be cheap.
  • 7:35 - 7:39
    Number six: don't equate
    your experience with theirs.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    If they're talking about
    having lost a family member,
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    don't start talking about the time
    that you lost a family member.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    If they're talking about the trouble
    that they're having at work,
  • 7:47 - 7:49
    don't tell them about how much
    you hate your job.
  • 7:49 - 7:52
    It's not the same. It is never the same.
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    All experiences are individual,
  • 7:54 - 7:57
    and more importantly,
    it is not about you.
  • 7:57 - 8:01
    You don't need to take that moment
    to prove how amazing you are
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    or how much you've suffered.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
    Somebody asked Stephen Hawking once
    what his IQ was, and he said,
  • 8:06 - 8:10
    "I have no idea. People who brag
    about their IQs are losers."
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    (Laughter)
  • 8:11 - 8:15
    Conversations are not
    a promotional opportunity.
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    Number seven:
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    try not to repeat yourself.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    It's condescending
    and it's really boring,
  • 8:23 - 8:25
    and we tend to do it a lot.
  • 8:25 - 8:29
    Especially in work conversations
    or in conversations with our kids,
  • 8:29 - 8:32
    we have a point to make,
    so we just keep rephrasing it
  • 8:32 - 8:33
    over and over.
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    Don't do that.
  • 8:35 - 8:37
    Number eight: stay out of the weeds.
  • 8:37 - 8:40
    Frankly, people don't care
  • 8:40 - 8:43
    about the years, the names,
  • 8:43 - 8:46
    the dates, all those details
    that you're struggling
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    to come up with in your mind.
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    They don't care.
    What they care about is you.
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    They care about what you're like,
  • 8:52 - 8:54
    what you have in common.
  • 8:54 - 8:57
    So forget the details. Leave them out.
  • 8:57 - 8:58
    Number nine:
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    this is not the last one,
    but it is the most important one.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    Listen.
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    I cannot tell you how many
    really important people have said
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    that listening is perhaps the most,
    the number one most important skill
  • 9:10 - 9:12
    that you can develop.
  • 9:12 - 9:13
    Buddha said, and I am paraphrasing,
  • 9:13 - 9:16
    "If your mouth is open,
    you're not learning."
  • 9:16 - 9:21
    And Calvin Coolidge said, "No man
    ever listened his way out of a job."
  • 9:21 - 9:25
    Why do we not listen to each other?
  • 9:25 - 9:27
    Number one, we'd rather talk.
  • 9:27 - 9:30
    When I'm talking, I'm in control.
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    I don't have to hear anything
    I'm not interested in.
  • 9:32 - 9:33
    I'm the center of attention.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    I can bolster my own identity.
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    But there's another reason:
  • 9:37 - 9:38
    we get distracted.
  • 9:38 - 9:42
    The average person talks
    at about 225 word per minute,
  • 9:42 - 9:46
    but we can listen at up to
    500 words per minute,
  • 9:46 - 9:50
    so our minds are filling in
    those other 275 words.
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    And look, I know,
    it takes effort and energy
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    to actually pay attention to someone,
  • 9:55 - 9:58
    but if you can't do that,
    you're not in a conversation.
  • 9:58 - 10:01
    You're just two people shouting out
    barely related sentences
  • 10:01 - 10:03
    in the same place.
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    (Laughter)

    You have to listen to one another.

    Stephen Covey said it very beautifully.
  • 10:09 - 10:13
    He said, most of us don't listen
    with the intent to understand.
  • 10:13 - 10:17
    We listen with the intent to reply.
  • 10:17 - 10:21
    One more rule, number 10,
    and it's this one: be brief.
  • 10:21 - 10:23
    [A good conversation is like a miniskirt;
    short enough to retain interest,
  • 10:23 - 10:26
    but long enough to cover the subject.

    All of this boils down to the same
    basic concept, and it is this one:

    be interested in other people.
  • 10:38 - 10:40
    You know, I grew up
    with a very famous grandfather,
  • 10:40 - 10:43
    and there was kind of a ritual in my home.
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    People would come over
    to talk to my grandparents,
  • 10:45 - 10:48
    and after they would leave,
    my mother would come over to us,
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    and she'd say, "Do you know who that was?
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    She was the runner-up to Miss America.
  • 10:52 - 10:54
    He was the Mayor of Sacramento.
  • 10:54 - 10:57
    She won a Pulitzer Prize.
    He's a Russian ballet dancer."
  • 10:57 - 11:00
    And I kind of grew up assuming
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    everyone has some hidden,
    amazing thing about them.
  • 11:03 - 11:07
    And honestly, I think it's
    what makes me a better host.
  • 11:07 - 11:10
    I keep my mouth shut
    as often as I possibly can,
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    I keep my mind open,
  • 11:12 - 11:14
    and I'm always prepared to be amazed,
  • 11:14 - 11:17
    and I'm never disappointed.
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    You do the same thing.
  • 11:19 - 11:21
    Go out, talk to people,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    listen to people, and most importantly,
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    be prepared to be amazed.
