Drunk Driving Persuasive Speech

  • 0:08 - 0:09
    - Good afternoon.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
Did you know all that in Wisconsin,
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    80 out of 10,000 drivers a year
    arrested for drunk driving.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
    As provided by the Wisconsin
    Department of Transportation,
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    we rank among the highest
    states in the country
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    for drunk driving.
  • 0:29 - 0:31
Now that we know our state has a problem,
  • 0:31 - 0:34
and that needs to be controlled,
as it appears to be getting
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    out of control, the question
is, how do we reduce this?
  • 0:38 - 0:40
And how do we reduce this statistic?
  • 0:43 - 0:47
I can relate to this topic, as I chose
  • 0:47 - 0:51
    to make a poor decision
    the summer of 2003,
  • 0:51 - 0:55
when I decided to drink and
drive and ended up behind bars.
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    And let me tell you,
  • 0:56 - 0:59
    this isn't something that
    you want to experience.
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    As you can see here,
  • 1:01 - 1:06
    this photo provided in the
    July 5th, 2003 edition,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
of the Iron Mountain Daily News,
I chose to drink and drive,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
    like I said, and this
is what I ended up with.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
    And after this accident, I
noticed I have way too much
  • 1:17 - 1:21
to lose at the age of
16, to throw my life away
  • 1:21 - 1:21
    by drunk driving.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
During the next bit of time,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    I'm going to discuss the
reasons why we need to try and
  • 1:29 - 1:30
    eliminate drunk driving.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
    I'll be covering what is
    considered drunk driving,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
the effects drunk driving can have,
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    the penalties of drunk driving
  • 1:41 - 1:43
and a few ways we can
    reduce drunk driving.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    Before someone can determine
if they are too drunk to drive,
  • 1:50 - 1:54
they need to know where the
line is drawn in the sand.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
Do you yourself know the legal limit
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    for drinking and driving?
  • 2:00 - 2:04
    In Wisconsin, the legal limit
    for drunk driving was reduced
  • 2:04 - 2:06
from 0.10 to 0.03, as provided by the
  • 2:06 - 2:08
from 0.10 to 0.03, as provided by the
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    Wisconsin Department of Justice website.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    Wisconsin Department of Justice website.
  • 2:14 - 2:15
Since then, we have had many
    fewer drunk driving in the
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Since then, we have had many
    fewer drunk driving in the
  • 2:19 - 2:22
    state, although, we're not
to where we'd like to be.
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    Now, that we know the
    meaning of drunk driving,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    let's move forward with
    what the effects of
  • 2:29 - 2:31
    drunk driving include.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
I'm not quite sure of all the effects
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    that come with drunk driving,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
but I would like you to
    picture your life without
  • 2:41 - 2:45
    a significant loved
    one or a family member.
  • 2:46 - 2:51
By choosing to drink and drive,
it can lead to many things.
  • 2:51 - 2:52
    They include jail time,
    fines, vehicle accidents,
  • 2:52 - 2:56
    They include jail time,
    fines, vehicle accidents,
  • 2:58 - 3:02
    which even lead to vehicular
    deaths, loss of loved ones,
  • 3:02 - 3:04
when it comes to vehicle accidents.
  • 3:05 - 3:08
By choosing to make that poor decision,
  • 3:08 - 3:12
you can also lose your driver's license,
  • 3:12 - 3:15
    have a mandatory jail sentence,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
or if you are a repeat offender,
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    your vehicle could
    install with one of these,
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    which is an Intoxalock.
  • 3:24 - 3:29
This unit is used to force
the driver to blow into the
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    Intoxalock, prior to their
    ignition unlocking in the car,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    being able to start.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
    Other things that come
    after the Intoxalock include
  • 3:40 - 3:44
    reduced driving hours,
    occupational driver's license
  • 3:44 - 3:46
and not a driver's license at all.
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    Now that we know the
    definition, penalties,
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    the effects of drunk driving,
  • 3:55 - 3:58
let's look at some alternative methods on
  • 3:58 - 4:00
how we can reduce drunk driving.
  • 4:03 - 4:05
    It's very important that
we all team up to make
  • 4:05 - 4:10
    this transition and reduce
    the statistic of drunk driving
  • 4:10 - 4:13
throughout the state and the country.
  • 4:15 - 4:18
Just a few things that we can
    do to reduce drunk driving,
  • 4:20 - 4:24
    when hosting a party, create
    a cool, calm, comfortable
  • 4:24 - 4:29
    environment to allow people
to feel like they're fit in,
  • 4:29 - 4:33
    that they don't need to
    forcefully drink to socialize and
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    essentially binge drink.
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    You know, by providing
    a low level of noise,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
low level of music, things like that,
  • 4:43 - 4:45
that allows people to just concentrate,
  • 4:45 - 4:49
    feel more laid back and
    relate to themselves.
  • 4:51 - 4:55
If you're having a party at
your own residence and per se
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    a family member, a friend
    plans on bartending,
  • 4:59 - 5:02
    please don't choose a
bartender whom it's going to be
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    forceful, to someone who
    does not elect to drink.
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    There are a third of
    adults in this country
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    that choose not to drink,
    and they shouldn't be
  • 5:11 - 5:14
pressured by people who elect to drink,
  • 5:15 - 5:18
to have to drink to fit
    in with everyone else.
  • 5:18 - 5:20
    There's a lot of people
that can have a good time
  • 5:20 - 5:21
    without drinking.
  • 5:24 - 5:29
    A few other things include
    passing lots of snacks around,
  • 5:29 - 5:31
having plenty of food, things like that,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    or even a reduced amount
    of alcohol at your party,
  • 5:34 - 5:38
    cause as I stated before,
    alcohol doesn't always make fun.
  • 5:38 - 5:40
    People make the party fun.
  • 5:42 - 5:46
    However, if you have had
    too much to drink and
  • 5:48 - 5:50
people are looking for a ride home,
  • 5:50 - 5:54
    look for a sober driver,
    look for a taxi cab.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
    If last resource you can't
    find a ride by someone
  • 5:58 - 6:02
    whom is sober, choose to
walk, exercise is a good thing
  • 6:02 - 6:04
and then everyone in America can use some.
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    Through the last few minutes,
  • 6:09 - 6:12
I hope this was something that
was an eye-opener for a lot
  • 6:12 - 6:15
of you, as it was for me eight years ago,
  • 6:15 - 6:16
when I made the poor decision.
  • 6:19 - 6:21
Throughout the conversation of the speech,
  • 6:21 - 6:26
    we covered many things that
    included what drunk driving is,
  • 6:26 - 6:31
    the effects of drunk driving,
    penalties of drunk driving,
  • 6:31 - 6:35
and just a few short options
of items that we can perform
  • 6:35 - 6:39
    to try and reduce the
    statistics of drunk driving.
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    With all this being said,
  • 6:43 - 6:46
please be sure to make better
    decisions when choosing to
  • 6:46 - 6:50
    drink and elect a ride
    from a sober driver,
  • 6:51 - 6:55
as I don't want you to be the
one who made a poor decision
  • 6:55 - 6:58
like I did just about eight years ago,
  • 6:58 - 7:03
    when I ended up behind
bars. It's not a fun thing,
  • 7:03 - 7:05
and I don't want you to experience it.
