Speakout Pre-intermediate Video Podcast Unit 1 Life

  • 0:13 - 0:18
Hi, I’m Henna, I work for the BBC here in London.
  • 0:18 - 0:22
I know a lot of people here but I only have a few close friends.
  • 0:22 - 0:29
I keep in touch with friends by texting, emailing and using social networking sites like Facebook.
  • 0:29 - 0:35
For me a friend is someone I can trust and depend on but also someone who makes me laugh.
  • 0:35 - 0:38
Today we are asking people about their friends.
  • 0:38 - 0:41

I’ve got a nice circle of friends, they’re not too many,
  • 0:41 - 0:44
but I like to keep in touch with both old and new friends.
  • 0:44 - 0:47

I’ve got a small circle of close friends.
  • 0:47 - 0:49

I have a few close friends, yeh.
  • 0:49 - 0:53

Yeh, I’ve got a lot of close friends, I’ve met them through college,
  • 0:53 - 0:57
I actually moved over here with three friends and so we all live together.
  • 0:57 - 1:01

I’ve got close friends, I’m not the type of person to have lots of close friends.
  • 1:01 - 1:05
I like to have really close friends and then I’ve got friends outside of that as well.
  • 1:05 - 1:07

Yeh, I do have quite a few close friends.
  • 1:07 - 1:10

I’m quite lucky I have got quite a large group of close friends.
  • 1:10 - 1:13

I have a number of close friends.
  • 1:14 - 1:16

How do you keep in touch with them?
  • 1:16 - 1:20

I keep in touch in all sorts of ways, I telephone, email,
  • 1:20 - 1:22
sometimes I might just call around their house.
  • 1:22 - 1:25

The thing we have in common is that we are all doing a similar kind of work,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
so we network within that circle quite a bit, email, telephone.
  • 1:29 - 1:33

Facebook, like, mainly and then MSN.
  • 1:33 - 1:40

I’m on MSN a lot, I’m on Facebook, I go to see them, but mostly texting,
  • 1:40 - 1:44
and using the Internet like social networking sites like Facebook.
  • 1:44 - 1:48

Mainly at the moment through Facebook, I’m always on Facebook.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
Usually by mobile phone, I send text messages and make phone calls.
  • 1:52 - 1:54

    Skype even, my family mainly.
  • 1:54 - 1:59

We live all over the place so it’s the Internet is the major way we do that,
  • 1:59 - 2:02
    email or networking sites.
  • 2:02 - 2:07

Normally through the Internet, but I like to write letters, very often.
  • 2:08 - 2:11

What do you look for in a friend?
  • 2:11 - 2:13

In a friend I look for someone who is quite trustworthy,
  • 2:13 - 2:18
I guess someone who is quite creative like myself, somebody who likes going out.
  • 2:18 - 2:22

Honesty, is probably the first one, if they’re not honest with me then they can’t be my friend.
  • 2:22 - 2:31

Reliable and loyal, and fun and easy-going, I guess.
  • 2:31 - 2:32

A sense of humour I think.
  • 2:32 - 2:36

Mainly the personality and if they, like, have the same interests as me.
  • 2:36 - 2:41

Mostly it’s people who can make me laugh or who I can share experiences with.
  • 2:41 - 2:43

    Loyalty, honesty, creativity.
  • 2:43 - 2:46

Someone I can relate to, someone I feel comfortable with,
  • 2:46 - 2:51
someone I can be myself with, someone who is easy to talk to.
  • 2:51 - 2:53

The qualities I look for in a friend, they have to be funny,
  • 2:53 - 2:58
they have to be kind and sincere, they have to be honest,
  • 2:58 - 3:03
and they have to be about this tall, otherwise I get intimidated.
