    Hello there ...
  • 0:40 - 0:45
Spiritual argument so often whittles down
    to an argument about semantics.
  • 0:45 - 0:49
But for the sake of today's episode,
    let me play with semantics
  • 0:49 - 0:52
so as to facilitate your understanding of something
  • 0:52 - 0:56
which can ultimately only be experienced
    through felt perception.
  • 0:56 - 1:01
Thousands of years ago it was said
that Desire is the root of Suffering.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    Is this true?
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    No.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
It turns out that it is not true.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
The word that was used was "Taṇhā".
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    Now, the translation of "Taṇhā"
  • 1:12 - 1:16
if you were to take it directly is Thirst.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    So what is the difference
    between Thirst and Desire?
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    A whole lot!
  • 1:22 - 1:30
Thirst and Desire are the opposite
    sides of the same coin.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
Thirst is the shadow-side of Desire.
  • 1:34 - 1:38
In other words, think of choice as a two-sided coin.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
On one side there is Desire,
on the other side there is Thirst.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
Thirst is the shadow-side of Desire
    on this coin called Choice.
  • 1:48 - 1:51
Thirst implies that there is a 'lack', first,
  • 1:51 - 1:56
and that the 'lack' is what is motivating
the craving that we are calling 'Desire'.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    Thirst is an 'attachment'.
  • 1:59 - 2:02
An attachment is 'craving of something' -
  • 2:02 - 2:07
which is motivated by an aversion to something.
  • 2:07 - 2:10
    The root of suffering therefore
is the state of perpetual movement
  • 2:10 - 2:15
from aversion towards its opposite attachment
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    (the thing we crave,
because of our acute awareness, of the lack of It).
  • 2:21 - 2:28
Attachment which is the by-product of Thirst
is nothing more than an addiction.
  • 2:28 - 2:31
It's the desperate craving for something
  • 2:31 - 2:35
because of something else that we're trying to avoid.
  • 2:35 - 2:39
    There is a difference between
    a craving and a desire.
  • 2:39 - 2:43
The craving is the shadow-aspect of desire.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
It is always the by-product of perceiving
    some kind of a 'deprivation'.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
    Desire is not bad.
  • 2:51 - 2:56
In fact, you could not escape from Desire in this lifetime if you wanted to,
  • 2:56 - 3:00
nor would you want to, if you really understood what it was.
  • 3:00 - 3:04
You can however, transmute it - you can exalt it.
  • 3:04 - 3:09
Desire in its purest form is like a "Yes!" to an experience -
  • 3:09 - 3:12
    nothing more and nothing less.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
It is the "Yes" that occurs from sorting through the Contrast
  • 3:15 - 3:18
but that is not the by-product of a "No".
  • 3:19 - 3:19
    In other words,
  • 3:19 - 3:25
it is a "Yes" to experience (or the choice of an experience),
that is not motivated by aversion,
  • 3:25 - 3:28
and thus, it does not take-on the form of Attachment.
  • 3:29 - 3:33
Desire in its pure form is absent of Resistance.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
It is a tool of the True Self.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    It facilitates Expansion, and Self-Awareness,
    and Self-Realization.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
Craving is a tool of the Ego.
  • 3:43 - 3:46
Are you ready for a bitch-slap?
  • 3:46 - 3:51
'Ego' is not a word that the Buddha even knew!
  • 3:51 - 3:53
If you said 'Ego' to the Buddha,
  • 3:53 - 3:56
he would be completely confused about what you meant.
  • 3:56 - 3:59
It is in fact a Freudian term -
  • 3:59 - 4:02
a Freudian term which was adopted into Buddhist circles
  • 4:02 - 4:06
and used to apply to the teachings of Buddha.
  • 4:06 - 4:09
It was simply the best way
that we could describe the difference
  • 4:09 - 4:13
    between an enlightened perspective
where there is no separate Self,
  • 4:13 - 4:18
    and the unenlightened perspective
where there is a separate sense of Self.
  • 4:18 - 4:21
Later, Jung called this the Shadow Aspect -
  • 4:21 - 4:25
    meaning Conscious versus Not-Conscious.
  • 4:25 - 4:28
    When the Buddha accurately described
    his Enlightenment experience,
  • 4:28 - 4:33
what he was trying to explain
was that he observed a polarity inherent within him
  • 4:33 - 4:38
such as Truth & Illusion, Conscious & Unconscious,
    Suffering & Happiness.
  • 4:38 - 4:43
And that Enlightenment transcended all polarity
    (which it does).
  • 4:43 - 4:46
Enlightenment is not Happiness any more than it is Suffering -
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    it is liberation from Polarity.

All decision are made by 'pain'.
  • 5:28 - 5:32
All decisions are the by-product of
trying to move away from pain.
  • 5:32 - 5:36
Imagine a life where there is nothing that you wish
    to move away from ...
  • 5:36 - 5:41
Life is lived for Joy in total non-resistance to Pain.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
In order to end this Trail of Tears,
  • 5:43 - 5:46
this perpetual movement away & towards ...
  • 5:46 - 5:47
    ... away & towards ...
  • 5:47 - 5:49
this movement from aversion towards craving
  • 5:49 - 5:52
(which is all that Attachment really is),
  • 5:52 - 5:55
we turn in the direction of our aversion.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
We sit with it completely, we embrace it.
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    We are unconditional towards It
  • 6:00 - 6:04
because we let It know that we are willing to experience it
    without needing It to change.
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    We are set free
  • 6:05 - 6:09
because of our willingness to bring
the Light of the Presence of our Consciousness

into the Shadow of the Absence of our Consciousness.
  • 6:13 - 6:16
We no longer have an aversion to our Aversion
  • 6:16 - 6:19
and so, it is no longer our master.
  • 6:19 - 6:22
Desire is transmuted because it is free of its Shadow.
  • 6:22 - 6:27
    And free of its Shadow,
there is no longer a need for reincarnation.
  • 6:27 - 6:32
    The craving for reincarnation
is gone from our Soul itself.
  • 6:32 - 6:36
The Soul now chooses from a place
not motivated by Aversion, or, Craving.
  • 6:38 - 6:43
    The process of Spiritual Awakening
    happens in three distinct steps.
  • 6:43 - 6:48
Now, we have to understand, of course,
that there could potentially, in future, be more steps
  • 6:48 - 6:50
but for the sake of your understanding,
  • 6:50 - 6:57
I have whittled Awakening down to
these primary three steps - like the Holy Trinity.
  • 6:57 - 6:59
I'm going to explain these steps to you now ...
  • 6:59 - 7:03
    Firstly comes "Spirituality 101":
  • 7:03 - 7:07
It dawns on you that you might actually
be capable of creating your reality.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    You might actually be free.
  • 7:09 - 7:13
It might actually be a choice for you to be happy,
    instead of miserable.
  • 7:13 - 7:16
And so, you go in the direction of happiness.
  • 7:16 - 7:17
    You focus positively.
  • 7:17 - 7:22
You do anything you can do
to add to the well-being of your life.
  • 7:22 - 7:24
You are flowing in the direction of your Joy.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
    You are allowing your Joy.
  • 7:27 - 7:30
You prioritize how you feel above all else,
  • 7:30 - 7:33
your life is dedicated to feeling 'better'.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
You finally let yourself have what you want.
  • 7:35 - 7:39
But still you want those things
because of aversions to other things.
  • 7:39 - 7:43
You are still running from feeling crappy.
  • 7:43 - 7:44
    You begin to feel, deep-down,
  • 7:44 - 7:48
that this is an endless-cycle of
Aversion & Craving, Unwanted & Wanted.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
No matter what you get, you want more.
  • 7:51 - 7:54
This is no longer as satisfying as it once was,
  • 7:54 - 7:59
so it is time for the second step - "Spirituality 2.0".
  • 8:01 - 8:06
    In Spirituality 2.0,
you realize that all movement towards your desires
  • 8:06 - 8:12
is movement away from something that is unwanted
that will never stop chasing you.
  • 8:12 - 8:16
Just like a storm or a tornado,
that's gonna chase you from place to place.
  • 8:16 - 8:20
    You decide that the answer
is to turn in the direction of your aversion,
  • 8:20 - 8:23
and to walk straight into the center of that storm.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
Instead of allowing your positive emotions
  • 8:25 - 8:29
now you begin the practice of
    allowing your negative emotions,
  • 8:29 - 8:31
so that there is no longer resistance to them.
  • 8:31 - 8:34
You're integrating and you're becoming whole.
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    The Unconscious is becoming Conscious.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    Craving is becoming pure Desire.
  • 8:39 - 8:40
    You're becoming whole
  • 8:40 - 8:44
as the Shadow is no longer separated
    from the light of Consciousness.
  • 8:44 - 8:48
Instead of feeling better, your aim
is to get better at feeling.
  • 8:48 - 8:52
You end up in the present moment
with no aversions and thus no craving.
  • 8:52 - 8:53
You are not going anywhere -
  • 8:53 - 8:56
Past ceases to motivate you towards the Future,
  • 8:56 - 8:58
and you are left squarely in the present moment -
  • 8:58 - 9:02
and then, you are ready for "Spirituality 3.0".
  • 9:03 - 9:06
In Spirituality 3.0 you can choose to
  • 9:06 - 9:10
    deliberately create in your Reality
    because of Desire.
  • 9:10 - 9:15
But that desire is no longer motivated
    by aversions to something.
  • 9:15 - 9:21
    Because of this,
Spirituality 3.0 is the realm that we call Choice.
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    Instead of craving,
  • 9:22 - 9:26
we recognize our infinite creator-nature and choose -
  • 9:26 - 9:29
choose to be wealthy or not -
not from a place of pain.
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    In other words,
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    "I don't want money because I'm poor ... "
  • 9:32 - 9:35
"I want it because I'm curious about that perspective, "
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    "like I want strawberry ice-cream."
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    "I don't want strawberry ice-cream because "
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    "I so, so, so, don't-want chocolate ice-cream!"
  • 9:42 - 9:46
Inspiration is what causes our movement
    towards things that we choose.
  • 9:46 - 9:48
We are completely in the Now.
  • 9:48 - 9:51
No Past is projecting into our Present or Future.
  • 9:51 - 9:54
The state of Spirituality 3.0 arises organically,
  • 9:54 - 9:58
as a result of shining the Light into the Shadow.
  • 9:58 - 10:02
To begin with, you start in 'Unconscious'.
  • 10:02 - 10:03
    You are asleep.
  • 10:03 - 10:06
And you are not aware that you are asleep.
  • 10:06 - 10:10
When you begin to wake up
you begin to notice the polarity of your existence.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
You start to see that there might be
  • 10:12 - 10:15
a Light-side and a Shadow-Side to that which is You.
  • 10:15 - 10:18
You recognize the difference between Positive and Negative.
  • 10:18 - 10:19
    And because you notice
  • 10:19 - 10:24
that so much of your Shadow-side
is creating the reality that you live in,
  • 10:24 - 10:27
you do anything that you can to crawl into the Light,
  • 10:27 - 10:30
out of that dark abyss that you have been living your life in.
  • 10:30 - 10:34
    This is Spirituality 101.
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    In Spirituality 2.0,
  • 10:36 - 10:39
after we have reached that 'Conscious' state
  • 10:39 - 10:42
(we've crawled out of that hole into the light),
  • 10:42 - 10:45
we capture that light that is Consciousness
  • 10:45 - 10:49
and we descend back into the abyss of our own Shadow.
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    With the light of Consciousness,
  • 10:51 - 10:56
that Shadow which we descend into ceases to be 'shadow'.
  • 10:56 - 11:00
And then we evolve into Spirituality 3.0.
  • 11:00 - 11:03
    The Unconscious becomes Conscious.
  • 11:03 - 11:05
    Polarity dissipates.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
You are Whole, in and of yourself.
  • 11:07 - 11:13
    You experience true peace -
which is the transcendence of Opposites.
  • 11:13 - 11:15
Peace is not what we think it is.
  • 11:15 - 11:17
    It is not just 'getting-along'.
  • 11:17 - 11:19
It is not just the absence of war.
  • 11:19 - 11:22
It is the absence of internal conflict,
  • 11:22 - 11:24
and thus, the absence of external conflict.
  • 11:25 - 11:28
It is the absence of Opposition and Polarity.
  • 11:28 - 11:32
It is the center point of the symbol of Eternity -
  • 11:32 - 11:36
no Opposites, only one unified Beingness.
  • 11:36 - 11:39
That is the state that we have called Enlightenment.
  • 11:39 - 11:42
And the state of Enlightenment is not a state of 'retirement'.
  • 11:42 - 11:47
It is more like the by-product
of the ongoing process of becoming Conscious.
  • 11:47 - 11:50
    As the Universe or Source
    becomes more conscious of Itself,
  • 11:50 - 11:53
there is more to become conscious of.
  • 11:53 - 11:58
And so, we, a microcosm of the larger Universe,
    must become more conscious.
  • 11:58 - 12:04
And so, there are always further Enlightenments
to experience - so far ...
  • 12:04 - 12:11
The Three Steps of Awakening are
clearly represented in the Eternity symbol.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
That's why I'm going to use this symbol
  • 12:13 - 12:16
to explain this three-step process of Awakening to you today.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
Because of how I have named these particular steps,
  • 12:20 - 12:23
(for the sake of your understanding)
  • 12:23 - 12:25
we then fall into the trap of thinking
  • 12:25 - 12:29
that one step is more 'graduated' than the previous step.
  • 12:29 - 12:34
It's more important that we see this on a horizontal line.
  • 12:34 - 12:35
The way the Universe sees this
  • 12:35 - 12:41
is that one step is not more 'graduated'
or important than the last step.
  • 12:41 - 12:44
The same way that the Universe does not see Crawling
  • 12:44 - 12:49
as an infinitesimal step compared to Walking.
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    They're crucial, they're important.
  • 12:51 - 12:55
So it's important to think about these steps more like a scale,
  • 12:55 - 12:58
where both sides are equally weighted.
  • 12:58 - 13:02
    Looking at the Infinity Symbol
we can see that there is polarity.
  • 13:02 - 13:06
On one side - Physical, on the other side - Non-physical.
  • 13:06 - 13:09
On one side - Life, on the other - Death.
  • 13:09 - 13:12
On one side - Light, on the other - Dark.
  • 13:12 - 13:16
But in-between them is a point - the Still Point.
  • 13:16 - 13:20
This is the part of the Infinity Symbol
    that actually represents Infinity.
  • 13:20 - 13:23
It is not the balance between opposites,
  • 13:23 - 13:26
it is the union and thus, transcendence of opposites.
  • 13:26 - 13:29
So, here we have Spirituality 3.0.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
On one side - Spirituality 101,
  • 13:31 - 13:34
on the other side - Spirituality 2.0
  • 13:34 - 13:37
and in the middle - Spirituality 3.0.
  • 13:37 - 13:42
It is tempting to rush the steps of Awakening
  • 13:42 - 13:43
    cause let's be honest,
  • 13:43 - 13:46
we would all love to rush to the place of Transcendence
  • 13:46 - 13:48
where we were feeling amazing all the time,
  • 13:48 - 13:50
where we were solidly in the present moment,
  • 13:50 - 13:52
and we were absent of Resistance.
  • 13:52 - 13:56
But these steps of Awakening will not be rushed.
  • 13:56 - 13:59
The place where most of our 'rushing' happens
  • 13:59 - 14:01
is in the practice of Spirituality 2.0
  • 14:01 - 14:05
where we fall again into the trap
of trying to resist the emotions
  • 14:05 - 14:07
that we've been running from for most of our lives.
  • 14:07 - 14:09
This is why I have not released
  • 14:10 - 14:13
this particular teaching on Spirituality 3.0 for a long time.
  • 14:13 - 14:20
Instead, I waited, so that people could be
squarely in the practice of Spirituality 2.0
  • 14:20 - 14:26
    and not do Spirituality 2.0
for the sake of getting to Spirituality 3.0.
  • 14:26 - 14:29
Cause if we're trying to do 2.0 to get to 3.0
  • 14:29 - 14:33
we have missed the point of Spirituality 2.0.
  • 14:33 - 14:37
We are no longer unconditionally present
    with the way we feel.
  • 14:37 - 14:40
We are no longer allowing our negative emotions.

The process of spiritual awakening happens in three steps, I have named these steps spirituality 101, spirituality 2.0 and spirituality 3.0. Indeed, in the future there may be many more steps. But like the holy trinity, let’s explore these three principal steps that add up to awakening. First, comes spirituality 101. In spirituality 101, you see the possibility that you may be free. You are confronted with the idea that you just might create your reality. So you start to create! You go in direction of what makes you feel joy. You become less powerless. For once, you do not resist your own happiness. You go in the direction of your positive emotions. You prioritize how you feel above all else; in fact your life is dedicated to feeling better. You finally let yourself have what you want. But still, you want those things because of aversions to other things. You are still running from feeling crappy. You begin to feel deep down that this is an endless cycle of aversion and craving, unwanted and wanted. No matter what you get, you want more. This is no longer as satisfying as it once was. So, it is time for the second step, Spirituality 2.0.
In spirituality 2.0, you realize that the answer is to turn around and walk towards your aversion instead. You learn the art of allowing (and thus non-resistance) relative to your negative emotion. You integrate and you start to become whole. The unconscious is becoming conscious. Craving is becoming pure desire. You are becoming whole as the shadow is no longer separated from the light of consciousness. Instead of feeling better, your aim is to get better at feeling. When you feel negative emotion, you do not immediately try to think or do something to feel better, you remain open to what that “negative” state has to teach you. You end up in the present moment. With no aversions and thus no craving the past ceases to motivate you towards the future and you are left squarely in the present moment. You catch a glimpse of peace for the very first time. And then you are ready for spirituality 3.0.
In spirituality 3.0 you can choose to create your reality through the use of deliberate focus but now your choices are no longer the byproduct of aversion and so there is no craving. Instead of craving, we recognize our infinite creator nature and CHOOSE. We choose to be wealthy or not. And we do not choose from a place of pain. In other words, I don’t want money because I’m poor; I want it because I am saying “yes” to that perspective in much the same way that I would say yes to strawberry ice cream. I don’t want strawberry ice cream because I so so so so don’t want chocolate ice cream. Inspiration is what causes our movement towards things that we choose. We are completely in the now. No past is projecting into our present or future. This state of spirituality 3.0 arises organically, as a result of shining the light in the shadow.
