Cultivating Calm and Ease: Immersive Contemplation Guided by Thich Nhat Hanh

  • 0:04 - 0:06
    Our breathing should be
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    pleasant
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    should bring us joy.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
If it happens that you don't know
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    what to do
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    the right thing to do
  • 0:23 - 0:26
is to go back to your breathing
  • 0:26 - 0:28
    and enjoy your breathing
  • 0:28 - 0:31
    because your breathing is enjoyable.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    In, out,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    deep, slow,
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    calm, ease,
  • 0:39 - 0:41
    smile, release,
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    present moment,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    wonderful moment.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    This exercise
  • 0:48 - 0:52
    is very pleasant to practice.
  • 0:52 - 0:53
    You drive your car
  • 0:53 - 0:54
    and you can practice
  • 0:54 - 0:57
this short poem for your breathing.
  • 1:00 - 1:04
You seat on a bus or on a train
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    and you practice also
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    in, out,
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    deep, slow.
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    And suppose you are washing
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    the dishes in the kitchen
  • 1:17 - 1:20
that is a time also to practice
  • 1:20 - 1:24
    in, out, deep, slow
  • 1:24 - 1:26
    and smile to yourself,
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    smile to your presence,
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    and your dishwashing.
  • 1:33 - 1:37
    Breathing in,
    I know I'm breathing in.
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    Breathing out,
    I Know I'm breathing out.
  • 1:44 - 1:47
We summarize these two sentences as
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    in, out.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
    Breathe in such a way
  • 1:54 - 1:56
that you enjoy your in breath
  • 1:56 - 1:57
    and out breath.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
It's a very simple exercise and yet
  • 2:02 - 2:06
if you do it you realize miracles.
  • 2:08 - 2:09
    Trust me.
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    Breathing in and enjoy it.
  • 2:14 - 2:18
    Breathing out and enjoy it.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
And be one with your in breath,
  • 2:21 - 2:22
be one with your out breath
  • 2:23 - 2:25
    and become fully alive,
  • 2:25 - 2:28
fully present in the here and the now.
  • 2:29 - 2:31
That is nothing less than a miracle,
  • 2:31 - 2:33
that you can produce at any time
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    in your daily life.
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    Breathing in,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    I know I'm breathing in,
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    breathing out,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    I know I'm breathing out.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    In
  • 2:51 - 2:53
    Out
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    When you do like that
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    mindfulness is there,
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    concentration is there
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    and life is there.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    You stop all your thinking,
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    your projects,
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    you are one with breathing,
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    it's wonderful.
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    After a few minutes
  • 3:10 - 3:11
    of breathing like that,
  • 3:11 - 3:15
    the quality of your breathing
    will increase
  • 3:15 - 3:16
    by itself.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
And you might like to try the second line.
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    Deep, slow.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    It means,
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    breathing in, I know that
  • 3:27 - 3:30
my in breath has become deep.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
It has become deep by itself,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    not because of your intention
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    to make it deeper.
  • 3:41 - 3:44
If you practice in and out
  • 3:44 - 3:45
    for sometime
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    naturally your in breath
  • 3:47 - 3:49
    will become deeper and slower.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    When mindfulness touches something
  • 3:58 - 4:02
it improves the quality of that something.
  • 4:02 - 4:04
    And that's why your breathing
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    has become more harmonious,
  • 4:08 - 4:09
    calmer,
  • 4:10 - 4:13
and that produces more pleasant feeling
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    within your body,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    and your consciouness.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    So deep, slow, means
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    breathing in I notice
  • 4:22 - 4:25
that my in breath has become deeper,
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    breathing out,
  • 4:29 - 4:32
I notice that my out breath
    has become slower.
  • 4:35 - 4:37
Now your in breath and out breath
  • 4:37 - 4:40
    has become deeper and slower,
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    more calm, more harmonious.
  • 4:45 - 4:46
    It helps your body
  • 4:46 - 4:49
to be more calm and more harmonious.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
And also it has an effect
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    on your consciousness,
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    on your mind.
  • 4:59 - 5:00
So when you pracitce deep - slow,
  • 5:00 - 5:03
of course, the pleasure is greater
  • 5:04 - 5:06
just because the quality of the breath
  • 5:06 - 5:08
    has increased.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
And later on you may try
  • 5:13 - 5:15
the third line of the gatha.
  • 5:17 - 5:19
    calm, ease.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    Breathing in I feel calm
  • 5:25 - 5:27
within my body and my mind
  • 5:30 - 5:33
Breathing in I calm the activities
    of my body,
  • 5:34 - 5:38
I calm the formation called body.
  • 5:40 - 5:44
Breathing out I calm the formation
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    which is called feeling.
  • 5:49 - 5:52
So this is exactly the practice
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    recommended by the Buddha
  • 5:54 - 5:57
in the sutra on mindful breathing.
  • 5:59 - 6:02
Experiencing the feeling I breathe in
  • 6:02 - 6:05
experiencing the feeling I breathe out.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
Calming the feeling I breathe in,
  • 6:10 - 6:12
calming the feeling I breath out.
  • 6:15 - 6:18
    Calm, ease, means
  • 6:19 - 6:21
    breathing in I feel calm
  • 6:21 - 6:23
    within myself,
  • 6:25 - 6:29
not only my body is calm
  • 6:30 - 6:35
but also my feeling has become calm.
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    So you experience your body,
  • 6:39 - 6:41
    you experience your feeling,
  • 6:43 - 6:44
and you breathe in and out
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    in order to calm
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    the formations,
  • 6:50 - 6:52
    first your body
  • 6:52 - 6:53
    and then your feelings.
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    Ease means
  • 6:58 - 7:02
breathing out I feel at ease,
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    I ease everything,
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    I take everything at ease,
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    I take time to live
  • 7:11 - 7:13
    my daily life.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
I am not in a hurry,
  • 7:17 - 7:19
I feel wonderful in this moment,
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    it means ease.
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    You feel light,
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    you don't feel burdened
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    by your worries,
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    by your afflictions.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
You feel that you have the freedom
  • 7:35 - 7:37
    within yourself.
  • 7:39 - 7:41
    You feel being yourself,
  • 7:41 - 7:43
not a victim of your worries,
  • 7:43 - 7:46
not a victim of your past,
  • 7:46 - 7:49
and your worries about the future.
  • 7:49 - 7:50
    Calm
  • 7:52 - 7:54
    Ease
  • 7:56 - 7:58
    And of course,
  • 7:58 - 8:02
this exercise is also very rewarding,
  • 8:02 - 8:04
    very pleasant.
  • 8:05 - 8:07
Breathing in a I feel calm
  • 8:07 - 8:10
    within my body, my feelings
  • 8:10 - 8:13
breathing out I feel very much
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    at ease within myself.
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    I take everything at ease.
  • 8:24 - 8:25
    In
  • 8:25 - 8:26
    Out
  • 8:26 - 8:27
    Deep
  • 8:27 - 8:28
    Slow
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    Calm
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    Ease
  • 8:32 - 8:35
    and then smile released.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    Breathing in I smile.
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    Breathing out I let go.
  • 8:49 - 8:51
I let go of my projects,
  • 8:51 - 8:55
of my worries about the future,
  • 8:55 - 8:58
of my regret concerning the past,
  • 8:58 - 9:01
    because the present moment is
    so wonderful.
  • 9:02 - 9:05
And I am capable of touching
  • 9:05 - 9:06
    the wonders of life
  • 9:06 - 9:08
    in the present moment.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    Breathing in
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    I smile.
  • 9:17 - 9:19
And this smile has the capacity
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    of releasing all the tensions
  • 9:21 - 9:25
that are left on your face,
  • 9:25 - 9:26
    on your body.
  • 9:27 - 9:29
This is a smile of a victory,
  • 9:29 - 9:33
this is a smile of love and kindness.
  • 9:33 - 9:36
    directed to your own body,
  • 9:36 - 9:39
    to your own feelings.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    And when you breathe out
  • 9:41 - 9:45
    you become released.
  • 9:46 - 9:51
Nothing as important as your peace,
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    as your stability,
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    as your freedom,
  • 9:59 - 10:01
    your ease.
  • 10:03 - 10:05
    You cannot exchange
  • 10:05 - 10:09
this valuable things for anything else.
  • 10:11 - 10:13
    So your released here means
  • 10:13 - 10:16
    you have become yourself,
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    you are capable of releasing
  • 10:18 - 10:20
    all your chaos,
  • 10:22 - 10:23
    your ideas,
  • 10:23 - 10:26
    even your ideas of happiness.
  • 10:27 - 10:29
    Each of us is caught
  • 10:31 - 10:34
    in our idea of happiness.
  • 10:34 - 10:38
We believe that will be truly happy
  • 10:39 - 10:43
    when such conditions are available.
  • 10:43 - 10:47
So you have an idea about happiness
  • 10:47 - 10:48
    and we don't know that
  • 10:48 - 10:50
    that very idea of happiness
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    is the obstacle
  • 10:52 - 10:55
    for our being happy,
  • 10:55 - 10:57
And if you are capable of releasing
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    that idea of happiness,
  • 10:59 - 11:02
happiness will be born in you right away.
  • 11:03 - 11:05
There's a young man who think
  • 11:05 - 11:07
that he can only be happy
  • 11:07 - 11:10
    if he get that degree,
  • 11:10 - 11:12
    that diploma.
  • 11:13 - 11:14
    There's another young person
  • 11:14 - 11:15
    who said
  • 11:15 - 11:19
that if he cannot get into that position
  • 11:19 - 11:22
    he cannot marry that person,
  • 11:22 - 11:26
and then happiness will not be possible.
  • 11:26 - 11:29
So we set up conditions for our happiness
  • 11:29 - 11:31
and we are caught in that idea.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
But happiness can come to us
  • 11:38 - 11:41
at any time if we are a free person.
  • 11:43 - 11:48
    Why are you committed
only to one idea of happiness?
  • 11:49 - 11:51
    When you are committed
  • 11:51 - 11:53
    to one idea of happiness,
  • 11:53 - 11:56
    you limit your capacity
  • 11:56 - 11:58
    of being happy.
  • 11:58 - 12:00
And if you let go that idea of happiness
  • 12:00 - 12:04
    then happiness can come
    from any direction.
  • 12:06 - 12:08
    One country might be caught
  • 12:08 - 12:11
    by one idea about happiness.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    The whole nation may think
  • 12:13 - 12:15
that unless we embrace that ideology
  • 12:17 - 12:19
and realize it, will be not future
  • 12:19 - 12:21
    for our country.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    And maybe during fifty years
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    or seventy years
  • 12:26 - 12:28
we are caught by that idea of happiness.
  • 12:28 - 12:31
And we have created a lot of tragedy
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    within our country, our people,
  • 12:34 - 12:36
just because you get caught in
  • 12:36 - 12:38
    one idea about happiness.
  • 12:38 - 12:41
    And maybe fifty years later
  • 12:41 - 12:42
    or seventy years later
  • 12:42 - 12:43
    You find out that
  • 12:43 - 12:45
    that idea of happiness
  • 12:45 - 12:48
has been an obstacle for happiness
  • 12:48 - 12:50
    for the whole nation.
  • 12:51 - 12:52
    So if you are lucky,
  • 12:52 - 12:55
    you can release that idea.
  • 12:56 - 12:59
    As individuals we also commit
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    the same kind of mistake.
  • 13:03 - 13:07
We invent an idea of happiness,
  • 13:07 - 13:08
    we cling to it,
  • 13:09 - 13:12
that's why many of us cannot be happy.
  • 13:13 - 13:14
    So releasing,
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    releasing things,
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    let go of things,
  • 13:20 - 13:22
it is a very important purpose.
  • 13:22 - 13:24
    And among this things,
  • 13:24 - 13:25
    the idea of happiness,
  • 13:25 - 13:26
    look,
  • 13:26 - 13:31
    let us look deeply in
    our idea of happiness.
  • 13:33 - 13:39
And you may find out that it is
    exactly that idea of happiness
that has prevented us to be happy.
  • 13:43 - 13:47
    And this teaching
    is very clear in Buddhism,
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    breathing in
  • 13:52 - 13:53
    I smile
  • 13:56 - 13:59
    I know happiness is possible
  • 13:59 - 14:01
    at any moment,
  • 14:01 - 14:03
the wonders of life are available
  • 14:03 - 14:05
    at any moment,
  • 14:05 - 14:06
    I can touch them,
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    I can be happy
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    without any condition.
  • 14:10 - 14:11
    And that is why
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    breathing out I can
  • 14:13 - 14:14
    release.
  • 14:17 - 14:18
    You are very smart
  • 14:18 - 14:22
if you can let go of these things
  • 14:23 - 14:25
that have prevented you to be happy
  • 14:25 - 14:26
    in the past.
  • 14:29 - 14:32
    You can be extremely happy
  • 14:32 - 14:34
    just sitting there and
  • 14:34 - 14:36
    breathing in and out.
  • 14:38 - 14:40
You enjoy the miracle of life.
  • 14:44 - 14:46
    So smile, release
  • 14:47 - 14:50
can bring you a lot of happiness.
  • 14:51 - 14:56
You need to be nourish by that joy
  • 14:56 - 14:59
    and happiness
  • 15:00 - 15:02
and that joy and the happiness
  • 15:02 - 15:04
can help to heal the wounds
  • 15:04 - 15:08
within your body and your soul.
  • 15:12 - 15:13
    And finally,
  • 15:13 - 15:15
    the last exercise
  • 15:15 - 15:18
    proposed in the gatha
  • 15:21 - 15:22
    present moment,
  • 15:23 - 15:25
    wonderful moment.
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    Breathing in
  • 15:28 - 15:32
I establish myself in the present moment.
  • 15:34 - 15:35
    Breathing out
  • 15:35 - 15:38
I know this is a wonderful moment.
  • 15:39 - 15:42
If someone comes and ask you
  • 15:42 - 15:44
    this question:
  • 15:44 - 15:49
Has the most wonderful moment of your life
    arrived or not?
  • 15:51 - 15:52
    We might be embarrassed,
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    we may say that, well,
  • 15:56 - 15:58
it does not seems it has arrived
  • 15:59 - 16:00
    but I strongly believe
  • 16:00 - 16:03
    that it will arrive soon,
  • 16:03 - 16:05
otherwise my life will have no meaning.
  • 16:07 - 16:10
But if we use our intelligence
  • 16:10 - 16:11
    in order to look
  • 16:11 - 16:12
    we know that
  • 16:12 - 16:14
    if we continue to live
  • 16:14 - 16:16
exactly in the way we have live
  • 16:17 - 16:20
our life during the past twenty years
  • 16:22 - 16:23
    not mindful
  • 16:25 - 16:26
    always running
  • 16:27 - 16:29
    always trying to escape
  • 16:30 - 16:33
that most wonderful moment about life
  • 16:33 - 16:37
will not be likely to arrive
  • 16:37 - 16:39
    in the next twenty years.
  • 16:40 - 16:42
    That is something logical
  • 16:43 - 16:45
but in this teaching you learn
  • 16:46 - 16:48
    that you have to make
  • 16:48 - 16:52
the present moment into the most wonderful moment of your life.
  • 16:56 - 16:58
    Because the present moment
  • 16:59 - 17:01
    is the only moment avalaible.
  • 17:04 - 17:09
And if you know how to go back to it,
  • 17:11 - 17:13
    to be fully present
  • 17:13 - 17:16
to touch the wonders of life in
    that moment,
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    that moment can,
  • 17:19 - 17:22
    can become the most wonderful
    moment of life
  • 17:22 - 17:26
and you know you have the capacity
    of doing that.
  • 17:31 - 17:33
And by very simple practice like
  • 17:35 - 17:37
    walking,
  • 17:37 - 17:39
    breathing,
  • 17:39 - 17:41
    smiling,
  • 17:42 - 17:47
    touching mindfulness, the beauty
of life, the wonders of life
  • 17:49 - 17:52
    you can make paradise,
  • 17:52 - 17:56
you can make the kingdom of God
    available to you
  • 17:57 - 18:00
    in here and the now.
