0:24 - 0:30Most likely table tennis or cycling
to one of our local beautiful beaches. -

that I've had for years. -

working at Amara? -
0:56 - 0:58Just connecting with our audience.

0:58 - 1:04Just to make somebody's life
a little bit easier just for that moment -
1:04 - 1:08that they're reading
my support article or whatever it is. -
1:08 - 1:13At the end of the project,
when I'm actually delivering, -
1:13 - 1:18let's say, a completed video
with some captions and subtitles, -
1:18 - 1:21that actually makes me feel
like, really, really fulfilled, -
1:21 - 1:25like, "Oh, now we have
more videos out there -
1:25 - 1:28that have captions and subtitles,
more people will be able to access it." -
1:28 - 1:30Absolutely the people.

1:30 - 1:34Everyone's interest in
making the world better truly -
1:34 - 1:37is just unbelievable.
-
1:37 - 1:41Everybody has this thing
that somehow is motivated -
1:41 - 1:45by the overall mission of Amara,
-
1:45 - 1:47which is actually to provide accessibility
-
1:47 - 1:52and also use their skills
to share information with others. -
1:52 - 1:55It's a special culture,
-
1:55 - 2:01there's not much of a top-down hierarchy.
-
2:01 - 2:04It's really a cooperative effort.
-
2:04 - 2:09We're all very spread
geographically and in time -
2:09 - 2:13but we always find time for each other.
-
2:13 - 2:17What languages do you speak?
-
2:17 - 2:20(chuckles) I'm only fluent in English
-
2:20 - 2:24but I'm learning
American Sign Language, Russian. -
2:24 - 2:28My spouse's family is
from the former Soviet Union, -
2:28 - 2:32so I'd like to be able to speak to
the other generations in that family. -
2:32 - 2:36English, Spanish, as my native language.

2:36 - 2:40My native language is Russian
and I use English for work. -
2:40 - 2:43Cantonese, a little bit of Mandarin.
-
2:43 - 2:48I have also learned some Spanish,
German and Chinese. -
2:48 - 2:51French and a little bit of Arabic.
-
2:51 - 2:54I speak English and about
-
2:54 - 2:58this much Spanish.
(laughter) -

3:11 - 3:13Yeah, no, I don't know.
(chuckles) -

3:15 - 3:19That's when the first prototype
was created. -
3:19 - 3:21I witnessed it,
-
3:21 - 3:24I was volunteering with Amara back then.
-
3:24 - 3:27What does accessibility mean to you?
-
3:27 - 3:30That everyone has the same opportunity
-
3:30 - 3:35being able to understand
the world through video -
3:35 - 3:39and through the captioning
and translation that we do, -
3:39 - 3:41and that other people do,
-
3:41 - 3:42no limits.
-
3:43 - 3:44It means a lot.
-
3:44 - 3:48I have a cochlear implant,
and they are hearing aid. -
3:48 - 3:54Without them, I cannot hear
practically anything at all -
3:54 - 4:01and with them, it is okay
in one-to-one personal conversations -
4:01 - 4:06but not so nice
when you use something technical, -
4:06 - 4:11when you're watching videos,
or talk over the phone, -
4:11 - 4:16so subtitles mean a great deal.
-
4:17 - 4:21Accessibility to me starts with empathy.
-
4:22 - 4:25A lot of my friends, actually,
don't speak English, -
4:25 - 4:30so being able to help
to make a lot of the information -
4:30 - 4:33that I have helped
to subtitle into Spanish, -
4:33 - 4:37if I can share it with some
of my friends back in Venezuela, -
4:37 - 4:40or my family, or my mom,
-
4:40 - 4:41it feels really good.
-
4:41 - 4:45What effect do you hope
Amara will have on the world? -
4:45 - 4:48Acceptance and...
-
4:49 - 4:52I mean, the world
is in such a difficult place. -
4:52 - 4:55Communicating, you know,
just communicating. -
4:55 - 4:58When we work every day
with so many people -
4:58 - 5:00from so many other countries,
-
5:00 - 5:05you just realize people are different
but the same, from all over. -
5:05 - 5:08I think there's a lot
of untapped potential -
5:08 - 5:14for this tool to be used
by other types of users. -
5:14 - 5:17Transcription is a great opportunity
-
5:17 - 5:22for people who have vision problems
to find employment. -
5:22 - 5:25I really hope to see this happen.
-
5:25 - 5:30Using AI to generate
subtitles and captions, -
5:30 - 5:33you know, that has been
on the rise for the last few years -
5:33 - 5:37and there has been a lot of humor
and a lot of mistakes, -
5:37 - 5:41and that definitely highlights
how important people are -
5:41 - 5:45to the process of language in any form.

5:45 - 5:47I'm hoping that the way
that we treat people, -
5:47 - 5:50and the way how we put
their experience first, -
5:50 - 5:52and their abilities first,
-
5:52 - 5:57will be noticed
and that that would inspire -
5:57 - 6:00other people to say
that it's not impossible to do that. -
