Surfer Kelly Slater on Problems in his Perfect Life

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    [Cassette tape winding]
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    [David Gerlach] You're listening
    to Blank on Blank,
  • 0:04 - 0:09
where lost interviews come to life,
distributed by the Public Radio Exchange,
  • 0:09 - 0:12
    prx.org. I'm David Gerlach.
  • 0:12 - 0:17
[Soft, acoustic music, Kelly Slater sings]
"The days are passing so fast, man I
  • 0:17 - 0:24
make it through this. My self belief:
    I'm better on my own."
  • 0:26 - 0:28
[Kelly Slater, spoken] You know, I mean
early on it would be like if "I just win
  • 0:28 - 0:32
a contest on tour", or whatever, win
a regional contest when I'm an amateur.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
It eventually became "I want to win a
    world title", then
  • 0:35 - 0:36
    "I want to win multiple
    world titles."
  • 0:36 - 0:41
And. You know, I was going for
all these "things", and, but I never felt
  • 0:41 - 0:45
comfortable in that moment in my skin.
I was always worried about the past
  • 0:45 - 0:47
and, or worried about the future and
thinking about something that happened in
  • 0:47 - 0:50
the past, and never like in that moment.
  • 0:50 - 0:55
[Soft, acoustic music, Slater sings] "the
time is now, please don't let this go.
  • 0:57 - 1:02
so let's just sail away and find our place
    today,
  • 1:03 - 1:07
    forget the yesterdays we're living."
  • 1:08 - 1:10
    [Slater] When you break through
whatever it is you need to break through
  • 1:10 - 1:12
to actually live in the moment, and have
    the experiences
  • 1:12 - 1:16
that are happening right now. It's a...
    you know...
  • 1:16 - 1:19
For me that was a very special thing.
    Which only, probably happened.
  • 1:19 - 1:28
Um... you know... in this decade, for me.
And, I uh... I had a few situations.
  • 1:28 - 1:36
Um... uh... you know my personal life
where, I was forced. You know, my dad
  • 1:36 - 1:40
dying, cheated on a girlfriend. All these
kind of things. Like a bunch of things
  • 1:40 - 1:43
converged in one year for me,
    [Josh Baron] Mm-hmm.
  • 1:43 - 1:48
[Slater] in my life. And um... And I just
sort of, uh, saw it pointing to the fact
  • 1:48 - 1:54
things, my life was getting worse not better.
And it should be getting better, because
  • 1:54 - 1:58
I've done all the things, met all the
    people, been all the places,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
and accomplished the things that I wanted
    to accomplish.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
    [Baron] Mm-hmm.
    [Slater] But life was somehow
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    getting worse, you know.
[Baron] You sort of, uh, alluded
  • 2:05 - 2:09
to it a little bit earlier, eight world
titles. Sounds like you found some...
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    [Slater] ...Nine actually... (laughs)
    [Baron]...nine. Excuse me. Sorry.
  • 2:12 - 2:17
Nine. My bad, a little embarrassing. Nine.
Um, it sounds like you found someone that
  • 2:17 - 2:23
you care, and, you know, love deeply, and,
you know, traveled to, you know, pretty
  • 2:23 - 2:25
much any place you want to travel on Earth
    thus far.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
    [Slater] Yep.
    [Baron] Has anything alluded you?
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    [Slater] Um, probably just like
    experiences at home with
  • 2:33 - 2:37
family and friends, and um, with my
    daughter. Um, who's twelve now.
  • 2:37 - 2:44
Um, I have some, uh, some residual guilt
there, cause I'm just not home much.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
And uh, you know I just don't get to see
    her that often.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
[Gerlach] Slater really opened up here
about troubles in his family life,
  • 2:51 - 2:55
and a few minutes later, he again picked
up his guitar and continued on that
  • 2:55 - 2:58
train of thought. Here it is.
    [Soft, acoustic music]
  • 2:58 - 3:02
[Slater] I woke up on my mom's birthday
and wrote this one, you know. It was like,
  • 3:02 - 3:10
uh, probably three years ago. I'll just sing a verse.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
[Slater sings] "I never really needed a
    father.
  • 3:17 - 3:24
I've never been that close to my daughter.
    Oh but I,
  • 3:28 - 3:32
    I'm coming home to you."
  • 3:32 - 3:35
[Slater, speaking] Sorry, I haven't played
    it probably since then. (chuckles)
  • 3:35 - 3:39
    [Gerlach] That's champion surfer and
    musician Kelly Slater on his
  • 3:39 - 3:43
not so perfect life, and this is Blank
on Blank. Thanks again to Josh Baron,
  • 3:43 - 3:47
    Editor-in-Chief of Relix Magazine for
adding his interview to the archive.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
For more interviews that you can hear
    nowhere else, head over to
  • 3:50 - 3:56

  • 3:56 - 4:00
by the Public Radio Exchange, prx.org.
    [Soft, acoustic music]
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    [Slater singing] "Just like heaven,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
    in your eyes.
  • 4:20 - 4:28
    Now I think I, I realize."
  • 4:35 - 4:41
[Slater, spoken] Something like that, but.
Kind of summing up, my uh, you know the
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    people around me, and...
