Not Synced
In the past few months
-
Not Synced
I've been traveling for weeks at a time
with only one suitcase of clothes.
-
Not Synced
One day I was invited
to an important event,
-
Not Synced
and I wanted to wear
something special and new for it.
-
Not Synced
So I looked through my suitcase
and I couldn't find anything to wear.
-
Not Synced
I was lucky to be at the technology
conference on that day,
-
Not Synced
and I had access to 3D printers.
-
Not Synced
So I quickly designed
a skirt on my computer,
-
Not Synced
and I loaded the file on the printer,
-
Not Synced
which was printing the pieces overnight.
-
Not Synced
The next more I just took all the pieces,
-
Not Synced
assembled them together in my hotel room,
-
Not Synced
and this is actually the skirt
that I'm wearing right now.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
So it wasn't the first time
that I printed clothes.
-
Not Synced
For my senior collection
at fashion design school,
-
Not Synced
I decided to try and 3D print
an entire fashion collection from my home.
-
Not Synced
The problem was that I barely knew
anything about 3D printing,
-
Not Synced
and I had only nine months to figure out
how to print five fashionable looks.
-
Not Synced
I always felt most creative
when I worked from home.
-
Not Synced
I loved experimenting with new materials,
-
Not Synced
and I always try to develop new techniques
-
Not Synced
to make the most unique textiles
for my fashion projects.
-
Not Synced
I love going to old factories
and weird stores
-
Not Synced
in search of leftovers of strange powders
and weird materials,
-
Not Synced
and I bring them home to experiment on.
-
Not Synced
As you can probably imagine,
-
Not Synced
my roommates didn't like that at all.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
So I decided to move on
to working with big machines,
-
Not Synced
ones that didn't fit in my living room.
-
Not Synced
I love the exact and custom work I can do
with all kinds of fashion technologies,
-
Not Synced
like knitting machines,
and laser cutting, and silk printing.
-
Not Synced
One summer break,
-
Not Synced
I came here to New York for an internship
at a fashion house in Chinatown.
-
Not Synced
We worked on two incredible dresses
that were 3D printed.
-
Not Synced
They were amazing --
like you can see here.
-
Not Synced
But I had a few issues with them.
-
Not Synced
They were made from hard plastics
and that's why they were very breakable.
-
Not Synced
The models couldn't sit in them,
-
Not Synced
and they even got scratched
from the plastics under their arms.
-
Not Synced
With 3D printing,
-
Not Synced
the designers had so much freedom
-
Not Synced
to make the dresses look
exactly like they wanted,
-
Not Synced
but still, they were very dependent
on a big and expensive industrial printer
-
Not Synced
that was located in lab
far from their studio.
-
Not Synced
Later that year, a friend gave me
a 3D printed necklace,
-
Not Synced
printed using a home printer.
-
Not Synced
I knew these printers were much cheaper
and much more accessible
-
Not Synced
than the ones we used at my internship.
-
Not Synced
So I looked at the necklace,
-
Not Synced
and then I thought,
-
Not Synced
"If I can print a necklace from home,
why not print my clothes from home, too?"
-
Not Synced
I really liked the idea that I wouldn't
have to go to the market
-
Not Synced
and pick fabrics that
someone else chose to sell.
-
Not Synced
I could just design them and print them
directly from home.
-
Not Synced
I found a small maker's space
-
Not Synced
where I learned everything
I know about 3D printing.
-
Not Synced
Right away, they literally gave me
the key to the lab,
-
Not Synced
so I could experiment
into the night, every night.
-
Not Synced
The main challenge was to find the right
filament for printing clothes with.
-
Not Synced
So what is filament?
-
Not Synced
Filament is the material
you feed the printer with.
-
Not Synced
And I spent a month of so
experimenting with PLA,
-
Not Synced
which is a hard and scratchy,
breakable material.
-
Not Synced
The breakthrough came
when I was introduced to Filaflex,
-
Not Synced
which is a new kind of filament.
-
Not Synced
It's strong, yet very flexible.
-
Not Synced
And with it, I was able to print
the first garment.
-
Not Synced
The red jacket that had
the word "Liberté" --
-
Not Synced
freedom in french --
-
Not Synced
embedded into it.
-
Not Synced
I chose this word because I felt
so empowered and free
-
Not Synced
when I could just design a garment
from my home
-
Not Synced
and then print it by myself.
-
Not Synced
And actually,
-
Not Synced
you can easily download this jacket,
-
Not Synced
and easily change the word
to something else.
-
Not Synced
For example, your name
or your sweetheart's name.
-
Not Synced
(Laughter)
-
Not Synced
So the printer pieces are small,
-
Not Synced
so I had to piece all the garments
together, just like a puzzle.
-
Not Synced
And I wanted to solve another challenge.
-
Not Synced
I wanted to print textiles
-
Not Synced
that I would just like a regular fabric.
-
Not Synced
That's when I found an open source file
-
Not Synced
from an architect who designed
a pattern that I love.
-
Not Synced
And with it, I was able to print
a beautiful textile
-
Not Synced
that I was able to use
just like a regular fabric.
-
Not Synced
And it actually even looks
a little bit like lace.
-
Not Synced
So I took his file and I modified it,
and changed it, played with it --
-
Not Synced
many kinds of versions out of it.
-
Not Synced
And I needed to print
another 1500 more hours
-
Not Synced
to complete printing my collection.
-
Not Synced
So I brought six printers to my home
and just printed 24-7.
-
Not Synced
And this is actually
a really slow process,
-
Not Synced
but let's remember the internet
was significantly slower 20 years ago,
-
Not Synced
so 3D printing will also accelerate
-
Not Synced
and in no time you'll be able to print
a T-Shirt in your home
-
Not Synced
in just a couple of hours,
or even minutes.
-
Not Synced
So you guys, you want to see
what it looks like?
-
Not Synced
(Yeah)
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
So Rebecca is wearing
one of my five outfits.
-
Not Synced
Almost everything here she's wearing,
I printed from my home.
-
Not Synced
Even her shoes are printed.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
Thank you, Rebecca.
-
Not Synced
Thank you, guys.
-
Not Synced
So I think in the future,
material will evolve.
-
Not Synced
And they will look and feel
like fabrics we know today,
-
Not Synced
like cotton or silk.
-
Not Synced
Imagine personalized clothes
that fit exactly to your measurements.
-
Not Synced
So music was once a very physical thing.
-
Not Synced
You would have to go
to the record shop and buy CDs,
-
Not Synced
but now you can just download the music,
digital music, directly to your phone.
-
Not Synced
Fashion is also a very physical thing.
-
Not Synced
And I wonder what our world will look like
-
Not Synced
when our clothes will be digital,
just like this skirt is.
-
Not Synced
Thank you so much.
-
Not Synced
(Applause)
-
Not Synced
[Thank you]
